Dear Salmon Bay Families,

We have had another great week!

This week we had our first Principal Coffee. It was informal and the opportunity to mingle while drinking coffee and muffins was welcomed. Please be on the lookout for future chats to be announced in this newsletter, and at FOSB meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month.

Today’s Parent Coffee covered additional safety precautions that have been put in place (entrance on 18th street has a buzzer and camera), the great news about the hiring of a second 4th grade teacher and the need for a parent legislative committee to collaborate with FOSB (Friends of Salmon Bay) and BLT (Building Leadership Team) on important issues throughout the year to support the efforts of our school administration, staff, and parents.

With regard to important issues, we are awaiting the installation of a buzzer and camera at our front doors. Any support you can provide as parents to expedite this, would be greatly appreciated.

All for now,
Evie Taylor
Assistant Principal

Salmon Bay Board Game
The middle school Problem Solving (Games) exploratory class created a race game called “The Salmon Bay Middle School Board Game”. The goal of the game is to graduate from Salmon Bay. Along the way, there are various obstacles or things that move you forward or backward. “You forgot your lunch, go to the office.” “There was a sub. They forgot the homework. Go forward three spaces.” “Your crush likes you, move up 2 spaces.” “Drew gives you a math test and you get an A, move up one space.” Each square has Salmon Bay teachers on it as well as special squares that require using cards from a deck. Class teacher, Rachel Street, shared that the game is a lot of fun, and she had a blast playing it! There are currently 5 sets of the game available and middle school homerooms have been offered an opportunity to borrow them.
5th Grade Guest Speaker
Today, 5th grade students in Megan's class, had a special virtual guest speaker from the east coast! Jessica (who is also a niece of Ms. Dixon!) joined the class to share about her career path and expertise in astrophysics. We learned about planets, special telescopes, and nebulas, and students asked many great questions. Thank you, Jessica!

K-5 Enrichment Fee Due Now
During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects. Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee).
Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.

We have an online payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student’s SPS Source account. Click here for instructions on how to access your student’s Source account and the SchoolPay system. Once you are logged in the Source, navigate to SchoolPay using the menu on the left side of your screen. This SchoolPay flier may also be helpful.

We ask that all enrichment fees be paid by October 14th. Scholarship funds are available. To request a scholarship, please contact Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator, Brittni Zackery, Counselor or Rob Bright, Counselor. Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome. You may add a scholarship donation to your online SchoolPay shopping cart.

If you have any questions about enrichment fees, camp fees or scholarships, please email Jodi at jrrussell@seattleschools.org
Halloween Celebrations
Elementary Costume Parade
K-5 students will participate in a Halloween parade outside on the track/upper field starting at approximately 1:45 pm on Monday, October 31st.

Individual classrooms will also host celebrations. Please watch for details from your child’s homeroom teacher. If your student would like to dress in costume, please review the Costume Guidelines for Families printed below.

Middle School Halloween Block Party
Students will participate in a Block Party on the 3rd floor from approximately 2:10 – 3:25 pm on Monday, October 31st. Classrooms/ teachers will host a variety of activities. ASB, our student government, is finalizing party activities and has requested support from our parent/ guardian community.

Volunteer Opportunity: Middle School parents/ guardians are being asked to volunteer and donate snacks in support of the block party. If you would like to help, please sign up here.

If your student plans to dress in costume, please review the Costume Guidelines for Families printed below.
Costume Guidelines for Families
Students are asked to arrive at school NOT in costumes. This helps us have a relatively normal morning of learning. Students may bring costumes to school and will be given a chance to change prior to the Halloween celebrations. Having costumes that students can easily pull on (with regular clothing worn underneath) is extremely helpful.

If your student plans to wear a costume, please also review the following guidelines.
  • Please make sure the outfit is appropriate for the classroom environment. All costumes should adhere to school policies for dress code, messages, and safety.
  • Costumes need to be non-violent in nature
  • Weapons and toy weapons of any kind are not allowed.
  • Avoid costumes that are dressing as people from other cultures.
  • No costume masks.
  • Make up, if used, should not be disguising the identity of the wearer e.g., whiskers and freckles, not face paint.
Need A Costume?
Need a Halloween costume? FOSB’s Community Building Initiative has collected a wide variety of costumes and placed them on racks in the school lobby. Feel free to stop by before or after school to browse the selection!
Mr. G's Halloween Candy Drive
Mr. G is bringing back his Halloween candy drive! After Halloween, On Tuesday, November 1st through Friday, November 4th, students can bring extra candy to the east gym and place it in the container marked by their homeroom teacher’s name. The candy that is collected will be donated to USO and be used to create care packages for military families. Participation is optional. The class that collects the most candy (in weight) will be treated to a special celebration with Mr. G.
The Community Giving program is now in its 5th year and parent Julie Lowe is ready to pass the reigns to a new steward. The time commitment is 10 - 15 hours between mid November and winter break, no skills needed other than being organized and Julie will provide a calendar, process and communication templates.

For those unfamiliar with the program, it supports families at SB who need help with holiday gifts. It's incredibly rewarding and ensures every family has their wants and needs met - from gift cards to Safeway and warm winter socks, to Legos and anime books.

If you have questions or are interested in helping out, please email Julie Lowe or Jodi Russell.
Fall Book Fair, November 14 - 18
Salmon Bay School Library
Our fall book fair will once again be held in partnership with Secret Garden Books!

Help Needed: We need parent volunteers to set up our book fair, staff it during the week and pack it back up Friday afternoon. The book fair tends to be a lot of fun and is a great chance to support and connect with students. Training is provided.
If you can help, sign up here.

We are also seeking 1 or 2 parents to volunteer as our Fall Book Fair Coordinator(s).
Please email Jodi if interested.
Salmon Bay School Directory
To support families who would like to connect with one another, we are inviting your participation in a family directory that will be shared with all families and staff at Salmon Bay. Participation is optional. The family information form allows you to select which information (name, email and/or phone) you would like to share with others in our community. You can simply complete the form including only the information you would like to share.

To participate in the directory, please complete this form: https://forms.office.com/r/4uyBwsHDRg

We hope to collect all responses by October 28th. All families will receive a PDF copy of the directory when it is complete. If you have questions regarding the directory, please contact me Volunteer Coordinator, Jodi Russell

Hello folks! We are in need of a girls’ basketball coach! The season begins on Monday, December 5th for the coach, as that is the coaches’ meeting. Practices can start the day after that meeting. There is a stipend for this position, but there is also a decent amount of paperwork involved, which is why we are reaching out now!
Basic responsibilities:
  • Coaching 2 practices per week (combined total can be no more than 3.5 hours)
  • Games on Saturdays (typically just one)
  • Positive attitude is a must…experience can be limited!
Reach out to Erin Telford if you are interested!!!
Hello middle school families! This week I started my HIB lessons in 6th grade Advisories. HIB stands for Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying. This lesson is a brief reminder for students to understand the difference between mean behavior and bullying, think about ways to make Salmon Bay a safer, more inclusive community, and what to do if they witness bullying behaviors. I have presented in Ticely’s, Katie’s and Drew’s Homerooms/Advisories. If you have a student in any of those three, please ask them what thoughts or feelings they have about that topic. Next week, I will be in Joel’s and Rachel’s rooms. If you have a student who needs any support with that topic or any other struggle please don’t hesitate to reach out to Brittni or me.

In community,
Rob, Middle School Counselor
Brittni, Elementary Counselor
Budget 101 Recap
Our treasurers held a ‘Budget 101’ as part of the FOSB meeting last night where they talked about how we raise funds, what the school relies on FOSB funding for, introduced the two accounts that are held, and provided an overview of this year’s approved budget - both income and expenses. These are the slides used, and this page on our website shares the full budget. Please reach out to Brian and Samsy with any questions: fosbtreasurer@gmail.com

Last Night’s FOSB Meeting Report & Minutes
Last night’s meeting was super informative and full of updates from many of our staff including both our Middle School Counselor, Rob Bright, and our Elementary Counselor Brittini Zackery. 6th grade Social Studies teacher Katie Gallageher talked to us about ASB (Middle School Government), how kids can join and what they will be doing this year including a Halloween Block Party! Sam Olsen talked to us about WEP (yes, Winter Enrichment IS happening this year) and as usual we got some great updates from our Principal, Ms. Dixon, our Volunteer Coordinator, Jodi Russel and many of our FOSB Committee Chairs. To read all about it, please peruse the minutes from the meeting. We invite everyone to attend next month either in person in the Library or via Zoom on November 17th at 7pm. Look for more info next month!

After School Programs
Is your student interested in creating or joining an after school club? We are hoping to get some clubs up and running for activities like Dungeons & Dragons, Magic, Pokemon, board games, or other student-led interests. Please fill out this google form if your student might be interested. We also will need parent volunteers to be at these clubs (this can range from leading an adventure or teaching a game, to just being there to take attendance and watch). There are also questions included about vendor-led after school activities, with the hope of understanding what programs students would like for winter and spring sessions. Thank you for filling it out! If you have any other comments or questions about after school activities, or if you would like to help out in getting these clubs and programs up and running, please feel free to email karen.morse@gmail.com

New School Entrance Policy
Starting Monday, October 17th, there will be new entry procedures for students and visitors arriving at school after 9:15am. Once front entry doors are closed and locked at 9:15, all visitors will need to enter through the 18th Avenue entrance and proceed to the office to check in. This entrance has a remote-operated door lock and video screen for our office staff to monitor entry. It is also ADA accessible.

A map of the location will be posted on the entrances and is included below.

If you are bringing your student in after school has begun, when picking up for an appointment or leaving early, they will still need to be signed in/out at the Office. They will need a slip to return to class. Likewise, visitors will need to proceed to the main office to sign-in.

This change provides safety and security advantages as well as significant efficiency improvements for our front office staff.
Thank you for your adaptability!
