Dear Asbury Friends,
It’s been about three months since I became a part of the Asbury family. I truly appreciate your warm welcome and hospitality. And I’m thankful that I get to serve the community and the world with y’all.
I know many of you are always concerned about my family in Korea, which I appreciate. My wife and I have talked about how much longer she and our kids would stay there, and now it’s likely that they will come back here sometime in April or May of next year. Yes. It was a hard decision. It’s challenging for us to be far away from each other for so long. But nevertheless, we acknowledge that my wife and her mother, who is getting cancer treatment, need each other’s presence now more than ever. So, please keep praying for my mother-in-law. Also, please keep my family and me in your prayers until we are reunited. And, you know I’m batching it. Please feel free to stop by my office or invite me to hang out anytime!
Advent begins this Sunday. Rev. Gayla and I are going to preach about Baby Jesus bringing change into our lives during this season of Advent and Christmas. This Sunday, we are going to think about how the arrival of a baby changes a parent’s life. Without doubt, there are so many challenges that new parents have to deal with. Life will be inconvenient. But still, parents eagerly wait to welcome their newborn baby because the joy that a baby brings cannot be compared with the difficulty they may face after a baby arrives. Let us look forward to the arrival of Baby Jesus, who gives us peace and joy that the world cannot give.
Blessings,
Daekyung

Charge Conference Special Meeting -
Sunday, November 28 after the 11 am Service
Dear Asbury Friends,
I am announcing a charge conference to be held on Sunday, November 28, immediately following the 11:00 am worship service. This meeting will be held in the Sanctuary, and will be only about 15-20 minutes long.
The purpose of this charge conference is to "authorize the Church Council to review the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) chapter 11 bankruptcy disclosure statement, BSA bankruptcy plan, and ballot, and to vote on the BSA plan on behalf of the church." Copies of the proposed resolution approving this authorization are available in the church office.
Rev. Gayla Rapp

Decorating the Church
for Advent & Christmas:
Sat. Nov. 27 at 10 am
On Saturday, November 27 at 10:00 am, we'd love to invite you to come and help decorate the Sanctuary and church for Advent and Christmas!
Last year, we only put up the Christmas tree, because we weren't having in-person worship at the time. But this year, we plan on getting out ALL of the decorations, making certain there's Christmas cheer everywhere you look!
We invite all ages to come and be a part of this. After we finish decorating, we will turn on the lights, and Pastor Kim will play the piano and lead us in singing some Christmas hymns and carols - what a wonderful way to get Advent and Christmas off to a great start!
Of course, there will be apple cider and donuts for all of us to eat - so come and join the holiday fun!

Chrismons for Christmas -
Starting Sunday, November 28 in the Welcome Center
So, what's a Chrismon, you ask? Chrismons, meaning "Christ monograms," traditionally are white and gold designs made from Christian symbols that signify Christ. Often displayed on an evergreen tree during the Christmas season, symbols such as stars, crosses, fish, crowns, and the alpha and omega remind us of Christ's identity, his story, and of the Holy Trinity.
We're offering several Chrismons for purchase this year. Check out the choices to your left! All Chrismons are $20 each, with all the proceeds benefitting our youth ministry's mission trips and GodSquad. You can purchase the Chrismons in the Welcome Center on Sundays, or, if you aren't comfortable attending worship yet, we can also mail them to you at no extra charge. Email Phyllis Williams for an order form at phyllisw@visitasbury.org.
Thanks so much for supporting our youth missions and ministries, and Merry Christmas!

This Giving Tuesday, Help Support The Good Faith Network, Johnson County
Asbury UMC has been involved over the past year in sponsoring the creation of a new interfaith group in our community called The Good Faith Network, Johnson County (formerly known as the Johnson County Interfaith Justice Organization).
Within this organization, 18 congregations will collaborate to build a collective voice to advocate for systemic change on behalf of the most vulnerable in Johnson County. Each congregation has been asked to help fund this initiative. Practice your radical generosity by giving to Asbury UMC in support of this initiative. Make checks payable to Asbury or use Easy Tithe (https://app.easytithe.com/App/Giving/visitasbury). Write or type "The Good Faith Network JoCo" in the memo line or note section.
Thanks so much for helping us to enact positive change in Johnson County!

Celebrate Wonder (3 years old - 3rd Grade)
|
|
Celebrate Wonder is a curriculum that seeks to celebrate spirituality through wonder. Children are naturally spiritual beings and everyday theologians. We want children to recognize and name this spirituality found within themselves and in all the world around them through play, discovery, biblical exploration, faith conversation, and relationship.
Children will learn spiritual practices which can become building blocks for holy moments and enrich the faith lives of each and every child. We hope you will come wonder with us as we celebrate the Spirit of God in the lives of children.
Advent begins this Sunday!! During Advent, we will be exploring the stories that prepare us for Jesus' birth.

Hebrews 11 tells the stories of people of faith throughout the Bible, offering encouragement to the original audience that they can step forward in faith surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. In the creeds of the church, we profess belief in the "communion of saints." These are both ways of saying how important our foremothers and forefathers of faith are to our own relationships with God. Their stories offer wisdom for living, inspiration and encouragement, and a sense of spiritual companionship. We will be exploring these people and their stories this quarter. You can join us in person or virtually.
This week, we'll be learning about Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
In-person at 10 am: We will meet at 10 am in the children's wing (3rd floor east). Masks are required.
Virtual: Join us as a family anytime and anywhere this week! Lessons and activities were emailed to parents today, and a complimentary video will be posted to Facebook on Sunday.

Confirmation
We are excited to be able to offer in-person confirmation again this winter – spring. Confirmation is not the end of a journey, but a new chapter in each youth’s faith journey. It is a time for each youth to explore faith, tradition, reason, and their experiences and begin to take the next step of owning their own faith and beliefs.
Participating in confirmation is not a promise to join the church, though that is one potential outcome, but a promise to engage the process of exploration of our own beliefs and the beliefs of the United Methodist Church.
We will have a kickoff in December and begin confirmation gatherings in January. All youth 7th grade and older who have not already participated in confirmation are invited to join this year's confirmation classes. Please e-mail our Director of Family Ministries, Heather Jackson, at heatherj@visitasbury.org for more information or to register.
