Updated for the week of January 13, 2023
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Happy New Year,

Hope everyone has had a great start to 2023! We are all looking forward to the exciting things that 2023 will bring for residents at JMPC!

Have you had a chance to check out MacDonald Hall recently? It is really getting close (Jan 16) to our winter week celebration! Residents, activation staff and NDSS students are doing a great job creating such a beautiful area for all to enjoy!
State of Emergency:
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2022 will definitely go down as one for the books for sure!!! We struggled over these 2 days with staffing but could not express our gratitude more for the amazing team at JMPC who ensured the residents had the best day possible during this unbelievable winter storm!

RSV Outbreak:
Unfortunately, on Monday Orchard Trail (one of our Home Areas on the 2nd floor) was officially declared in RSV Outbreak by KFLA Public Health. The families connected to this Home area were notified over the weekend as the situation was developing. As a result of this outbreak, only designated essential caregivers can visit residents from Orchard Trail. No General visitors are permitted in Orchard Trail during the outbreak.

Masks with Shields:
We have moved to providing all persons entering the Home with a mask/shield combination. There is a rise in respiratory related outbreaks and cases in our area and we want to ensure the best protection we can for all concerned. We appreciate your cooperation with this change.

Early Adopter with the Office of the Chief Coroner:
JMPC has offered to be an early adopter of a new process involving the Office of the Chief Coroner. There are only 7 homes across Ontario who agreed to participate in this.
The change in the process of reporting deaths in LTC is in response to recommendations made from the Public Inquiry into the Safety and Security of Residents in LTC Homes. By being an early adopter home we will be able to provide input to the Office of the Chief Coroner to help improve processes further if needed. By the Spring of 2023, all LTC homes will be actively using this new process. The new Resident Death Notice form that staff will now fill out contains more in-depth questions regarding a residents medical diagnosis, health status and recent medication. Based on the nurses responses to these questions, it will prompt them as to when to call the coroner. As a result, there will be a greater number of coroner cases and a greater likelihood that the coroner will reach out directly to the family of the resident involved. We felt it was important for families to be aware of this change.

Education:
We are currently gathering information around topics of interest related to education for staff, residents and families. Do you have any suggestions for education topics that you feel would be beneficial for any of these groups? We would love to hear from you. Please reach out to Carol Corcoran who is our Manager of Nursing ccorcoran@lennox-addington.on.ca Carol did provide a presentation to Family Council earlier this week on this topic.

Family and Resident Council Survey Results:
Thank you to those of you who completed the survey in November. We have now had a chance to compile the results and you can see a summary later on this newsletter. We were really glad to see the number of responses from family had almost doubled this year!

If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them.

IPAC Education for Designated Essential Caregivers
IPAC Education that is required for all Designated Essential Caregivers
With the roll out of the new Fixing Long Term Care Act, we are required to provide specific IPAC related education to our Essential Caregivers. We also need to be able to demonstrate that we have provided the education and that everyone has participated / received it and that it met your needs as it relates to IPAC knowledge. With that said, here is a Youtube link of an educational video prepared by Public Health that covers all the required content.

Once you have watched the video, we will need you to complete the quiz found at the survey monkey link here in order to obtain / maintain your essential caregiver status:

As always, we are happy to help you with this if you are struggling to access the link or would prefer to complete a hard copy.

Please reach out to the screener when you come and they will be happy to help you out. Alternatively, you can reach out to your manager point of contact and they can assist you prior to your visit as well. This is a Ministry requirement.

We had 63 family members participate from JMPC and 38 residents from JMPC participate.

Each year we take a deep dive into all answers scoring below 80%.

The score of strongly agree and agree (as has historically been done) were combined and our lowest Resident satisfaction result was 84%!!!

Here is an overview of the survey results from our Residents and our Families.
These are helpful Educational Guides that were created by a group of people living with dementia and their care partners. We thought we would feature a different guide moving forward in our newsletter.

Essential Caregiver Designation
Essential Caregivers (who are designated by the resident/POA) must submit this form and be fully vaccinated (3 doses) to be approved as an essential caregiver. In the event that COVID restrictions are changed, it will be important to have this essential caregiver designation in place in advance as it is difficult to predict the restrictions that we may be directed to implement.

Residents are permitted to designate as many Essential Caregivers as they wish.

NON Vaccinated Essential Caregiver (who are designated by the resident/POA) must submit this form and complete the required IPAC education to be approved as an essential caregiver.
NOTE: Non Vaccinated Essential Caregivers are not permitted to visit if their loved one is on isolation themselves or their Home area is in outbreak.

Changing Designated Essential Caregivers:
Changes in essential caregivers would be considered by the Home in very limited circumstances.

Should the resident/POA wish to change/add an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted and await the approval process.
