Winter Solstice

December 21, 2024, at 4:21 AM (EST)

The first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere is marked by the winter solstice.

For the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs every year on December 21 or 22.

The winter solstice is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight throughout the year, making it the “shortest day” of the year. Thankfully, after we reach the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and longer again until we reach the summer solstice.

Think of it this way: Although the winter solstice means the start of winter, it also means the return of more sunlight. It only gets brighter from here!

Let us introduce you to two of our Community Initiatives

Mifflin-Juniata Energy Bank

Energy Bank provides heat assistance to residents of Mifflin or Juniata County ineligible for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) benefits. Services are tentatively available from November through the end of March. There is no income eligibility, but co-payment based on income does apply. Residents ages 60+ are eligible for Energy Bank assistance regardless of receipt of LIHEAP benefits. Financial health, energy conservation, and weatherization information is provided.

The Nurse's Pantry - Mifflin and Juniata

For a child living in poverty or in an ALICE household, a lack of basic necessities is one of the top reasons for chronic absenteeism.

What it is: An in-school resource for clothing, toiletries and other wellness products so kids can succeed in school and in life.

How it works: Mifflin and Juniata Elementary students are introduced to The Nurse’s Pantry by the school nurse, principal, or guidance counselor. In addition to attire, The Nurse’s Pantry provides hygiene items, appropriate footwear, outerwear, undergarments and lice treatment kits to those students who need these basic necessities to attend school.
