Global Education Supports Tritons Affected
by the Conflict in Ukraine
In agreement with the Chancellor's statement of support for those impacted by the crisis in Ukraine, Global Education is deeply saddened by the tragic events occurring in Ukraine and extends its wholehearted support to members of the UC San Diego community who are impacted. Our offices have conducted targeted outreach to individuals who may be affected to confirm their safety and inform them of resources available to support their academic, personal, professional, and emotional well-being. Through virtual and in-person activities, Global Education is committed to ensuring members of our international community who are directly or indirectly affected by these alarming events are acknowledged and supported as we navigate this uncertain time.

For academics, administrators and professionals, the 2023-24 Scholar Catalog of Awards is now available!

The Scholar Program offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences through hundreds of awards in 135 countries. More than 800 fellowships are awarded annually to U.S. higher education professionals to teach, research, and attend seminars abroad. Award types range from Distinguished Scholar appointments to early career postdoctoral awards and include two-week in-country seminars for administrators to learn about host country education systems and to network with U.S. and international colleagues. Fulbright opportunities range from a few months to a full year; Flex option awards allow for multiple short in-country or multi-country stays that offer further flexibility in accommodating teaching and research schedules. From collaborating with astronomers and data scientists in Chile to embarking on a two-week study tour of universities in Germany, there is a Fulbright Award suitable for any UC San Diego faculty or staff member.

UC San Diego has a strong legacy of generating and attracting Fulbright grantees. In 2018, UC San Diego was recognized by the Department of State as being a Top Producing Institution for Fulbright Grantees. For the 2021-22 grant cycle, 25 percent of Fulbright Student Award applicants successfully received a grant. UC San Diego’s reputation as a world-class research university makes it a desirable destination for Fulbright students and scholars from around the globe. Currently, UC San Diego hosts 21 Fulbright Scholars and Students from 15 countries in nearly all of campus’s divisions and professional schools.

Alumni and Employer Interactive Maps Now Available
ISPO and IFSO are proud to announce two new innovative tools to support international students and scholars in the job and internship search process:

  1. Interactive Alumni Employment map that shows the U.S. employers who sponsored UC San Diego international students on Optional Practical Training (OPT), J-1 Academic Training (AT) and STEM OPT in 2021.
  2. Interactive H-1B Employer map that indicates ALL the U.S. companies who sponsored individuals for professional employment in 2021.
These resources are an example of the many ways ISPO supports students and recent alumni in their professional development and success. ISPO’s monthly iEmployment newsletter communicates important regulatory and policy information to recent graduates on OPT and AT. ISPO also created iwork.ucsd.edu, a robust resource page on professional development and career opportunities. This page is designed for current students and recent graduates and provides information on both paid work and volunteer opportunities.

ISPO also organizes a myriad of information sessions and webinars throughout the academic year on employment in the U.S. These workshops cover topics such as working culture in the U.S., working rights based on visa type, applying to graduate programs and writing effective resumes. ISPO collaborates regularly with campus partners such as the Career Center and the Writing Hub to create these in-demand webinars that are tailored to the specific needs and concerns of UC San Diego's international community.

Through these efforts, ISPO supports the holistic experience of international students at UC San Diego and contributes to building a thriving network of lifelong Tritons.
Fall 2021 International Student Snapshot
ISPO's International Student Snapshot for Fall 2021 is live! Deviating from the traditional PDF format, the snapshot data is now accessible through a dynamic and interactive visual dashboard. Faculty, staff and other users can filter and search data to learn more about international student populations by country of origin, department and division, academic level, and by those working in the U.S. on OPT, STEM OPT and AT. Historical data from Fall 2019 to the current academic year is available to explore trends and changes in UC San Diego's international student population.
UC San Diego is home to the seventh largest international student population in the U.S., according to the Institute of International Education's (IIE) 2021 Open Doors Report. Despite overall numbers of international students in the U.S. declining in recent years, UC San Diego continues to be a top choice for students from around the world. ISPO staff members are committed to ensuring that this large and critical student population excels in their academic, personal and professional lives.

Calling All Faculty: Global Seminars 2023 Request for Proposals
Global Seminars now offers several new and creative program modalities to UC San Diego faculty. In addition to the traditional five-week study abroad model, three additional options are available:

  • "Study Away" opportunities in U.S. states and territories,
  • Hybrid Global Seminars, which are a blend of two-week periods on-site internationally and three weeks of remote and/or on-campus instruction, and
  • An eight-week summer internship Global Seminar.

These different program structures are more affordable for students, more flexible for faculty, and more accessible for under-represented populations such as undocumented students.

UC San Diego faculty are already piloting these program modalities this summer. Professor of Sociology Vanesa Ribas is organizing a Study Away Global Seminar in San Juan, Puerto Rico and MMW Director Professor and Study Abroad Faculty Co-Director Matthew Herbst's Global Seminar will be split between San Diego and to Santa Cruz, California. Additionally, Professor Bill Robertson Geibel and Sixth College are coordinating an eight-week summer internship program that will fulfill the College's practicum requirement. Information on these and the entire Global Seminars catalog for Summer 2022 can be found here.

Study Abroad UC San Diego actively supports faculty at every stage of developing Global Seminars. If you are interested in teaching a Global Seminar or are ready to submit a Request for Proposal, click here. Study Abroad UC San Diego will also be running a series of information sessions for faculty throughout Winter Quarter. To learn more, contact Jim Galvin, Director of Program Development for Global Seminars.

Please note that proposals for Summer 2023 are due April 15, 2022.
