AIAA at UCLA is a professional organization that connects students, industry representatives, and academics dedicated to the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics. Throughout the school year, our chapter collaborates with various aerospace companies to provide events that facilitate networking and promote professional development skills for our members. In addition to these opportunities, the backbone of our organization are the four student projects: Design Build Fly (DBF), Rocket Project (URP), Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS), and Bruin Space Group (BSG). The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) was created in 1963 by merging the American Rocket Society (est. 1930) and the Institute of Aerospace Sciences (est. 1933). AIAA is currently the leading Aerospace Publisher, Wellspring for Informational Exchange, and a strong advocate for a Diverse Community amongst engineers and other professionals. The AIAA Chapter at UNLV was established in 2005 as one of the first aerospace & aeronautics student organizations on campus. UNLV AIAA aims to drive the curiosity, passion, and love students have for airplanes, rockets, and space towards real-world engineering applications. Our organization specifically focuses on the following objectives at UNLV: 1) Raising awareness and fostering interest in the aerospace industry with student body 2) Promote local, regional, national, and international AIAA programs 3) Facilitate the implementation of aerospace related projects and research at UNLV.

The Student Branch of AIAA at USC works to connect students interested in aerospace to with industry professionals and provide insight into what working in the aerospace industry is like. Dr. Paul Bevilaqua has spent much of his career developing Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft. He joined Lockheed Martin as Chief Aeronautical Scientist and became Chief Engineer of the Skunk Works, where he played a leading role in creating the Joint Strike Fighter. He invented the dual cycle propulsion system that made it possible to build a stealthy supersonic VSTOL Strike Fighter, and suggested that conventional and Naval variants of this aircraft could be developed to create a common, affordable aircraft for all three services. He subsequently led the engineering team that demonstrated the feasibility of building this aircraft.

Prior to joining Lockheed Martin, he was Manager of Advanced Programs at Rockwell International’s Navy aircraft plant, where he led the design of VSTOL interceptor and transport aircraft. He began his career as an Air Force officer at Wright Patterson AFB, where he developed a lift system for an Air Force VSTOL Search and Rescue Aircraft. He received degrees in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and Purdue University.

He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He is also the recipient of a USAF Scientific Achievement Award, AIAA and SAE Aircraft Design Awards, AIAA and AHS VSTOL Awards, and Lockheed Martin AeroStar and Nova Awards.

Dr. Nahum Melamed is a project leader in the Embedded Control Systems Department in the Guidance and Control Subdivision at The Aerospace Corporation, a position he has held since 2003. As a technical lead in Launch Vehicle Software, Melamed coordinates and guides a team of interdepartmental technical experts, and supports validation and mission readiness certification of the flight software and mission parameters for NASA’s Artemis missions. He serves as the management, program office, customer, and contractor point of contact in the flight software area. In his work, Melamed monitors flight operations on day of launch, performs post-flight analyses, and participates in discussions concerning launch performance.

During his tenure at Aerospace, Melamed has demonstrated a corporate educational standard for knowledge and competency in space systems engineering. He conducts planetary defense technical and policy studies, co-chairs planetary defense conferences, serves on exercise organizing committees, speaks at these venues, and supports science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) events.

EDUCATIONMelamed earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.

AWARDS AND HONORSMelamed was honored by The Aerospace University (TAU) for leading the development of a web-based asteroid deflection application jointly with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and instructing a TAU planetary defense class utilizing the tool. Upon successfully completing the corporation’s certificate program, Melamed was awarded the Aerospace Systems Architecting Engineering Certificate.

I am the founder of DIBASHI Consulting LLC, a consulting firm that assists private ventures, government organizations and higher learning foundations with top to bottom technical and program management expertise in space-based productions.

Before devoting my work full-time to DIBASHI Consulting, I served a multitude of roles with the last being innovative Engineering Strategist at a leading Fortune 500 aerospace organization whose customers include private enterprises and various government organizations like NASA.

I have over 20 years of experience in the Astronautical Engineering field and built my brand on being able to create the impossible.

In addition to being a passionate engineer, I am an advocate of educating the next generation of engineers through outreach events at universities and various other learning institutions.

"My name is Luis Cuevas, and I am a structural design engineer at Lockheed Martin. I have been in my current role for a little over two years now. During this time, I have stayed active with AIAA by becoming a professional member with support from Lockheed. I participated in Lockheed's RECAP program, which is an internal effort for early careers to attend AIAA conferences such as SciTech. I took full advantage of this program by networking and expanding my technical skills. I also joined our internal LM-AIAA section and managed the internal SharePoint as well as helped with outreach events in the Antelope Valley.
I attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. During my undergraduate studies, I served as president of UNLV AIAA, a student chapter of AIAA, for over two years. During my time as president, membership exploded over 100%, and we experienced our highest growth period. Because of this growth, our chapter competed in DBF and 3D Printed Aircraft competitions and placed 3rd and 1st, respectively. AIAA has been a great network and organization to be part of. I've grown as a person and made lifelong friends along the way!”
