THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT
INSIDE THE SCHOOL
Assistant Professor Chris Etheridge received the Promising Professor Award, second place, from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's Mass Communication and Society Division. This award honors junior faculty who demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching.
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Dean Ann BrillProfessor Patricia Gaston, and Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo spoke at the Tech & Social Justice Workshop 2021, held virtually June 10-11. The workshop, supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation and KU Center for Digital Inclusion, brought together scholars, practitioners, policymakers and citizens concerned with how technology might be used to enhance social justice and better support marginalized populations. About 200 people attended the workshop.

Assistant Professor Chris Etheridge and a team of researchers from several universities will present their research on a systematic approach to identifying the civic information infrastructure of a community to the Communication Theory and Methods Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in August. In this method paper, they argue that civic information sources have become so varied in the digital age that database searches, keyword searches, and interviews with civic leaders are necessary to fully conceptualize the information infrastructure of a community.

Assistant Professor Chris Etheridge and doctoral student Fatemeh Shayesteh along with two other researchers from another university will present an analysis of representations of victims and perpetrators in true crime podcasts to the Entertainment Studies Interest Group of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication in August. They find that podcasts are generally reluctant to break from the longstanding tropes common in true crime narratives.

Lisa McLendon received a 2021 Course Development Grant from the KU Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies to develop a JOUR 201 topics course on the media climate in post-Soviet countries.

Lisa McLendon was the featured guest on video podcast That Word Chat on June 8, for a wide-ranging discussion on language, grammar and writing.

Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye will present (alongside other Native scholars) as part of a panel to the Center for Inter-American Studies at the University of Graz in Austria on June 28. Greene-Blye’s focus will be on problematic representations of Indigenous communities, issues and individuals in news media.

J-School DCS master's graduate organizes successful PRIDE event
Fally Afani, who graduated this spring from the J-School with a master's degree in Digital Content Strategy, was the organizer of last weekend's PRIDE event in Lawrence. Afani said the event was a huge success in part because of the skills she learned with her new degree: “I enrolled in the Digital Content Strategy program to help my business (I Heart Local Music) and learn how to get people to live events using online promotion. I used only what I learned in the DCS program to promote and market PRIDE, which I have been working on since last year. We estimated that at least 2,000 people attended the PRIDE parade and party. We really needed this boost for the arts and culture scene after COVID, and my education from the School of Journalism really helped pull this together. Believe me, I was shocked when I got out of the car and saw South Park stuffed full of people, my jaw hit the floor! What I’ve learned in this program has turned out to be completely valuable beyond words.” (Photo of end-of-parade party at Abe & Jake's Landing by Fally Afani.) Read more here.
