It's Norfolk Visual Arts Month!

Norfolk Arts kicks off the 8th annual Norfolk Visual Arts Month on October 1! This is a celebration of the many ways to experience visual arts in Norfolk and the difference the arts make in our lives. Throughout the month, we encourage you to join us as we celebrate the over 100 organizations and establishments bringing visual arts to the forefront in our city every day.

Poetry and Pavement

Kick off Visual Arts Month with us on October 1 at 3 p.m. as we unveil the Poetry on the Pavement Project at Willard Model Elementary School. A poem by former Willard Elementary School student, Shaaron Hernandez Chamul Casey, will be the first painted onto the pavement in front of the school.

Norfolk Arts will continue the project throughout the month painting 25 short poems by poets who live, work or attend school in Norfolk in various locations throughout the city.

150 Years of Service

Did you know we have the nation's third oldest organized fire department right here in Norfolk? It's true! Norfolk Fire-Rescue has been faithfully serving our community for 150 years - and in that time, the department, and the ways in which they serve, has grown exponentially.

Stay tuned for information on their commemorative ceremony later this year!

What's Next?

We received over 800 comments when we asked you to tell us what your needs for walking, bicycling, scootering, and taking transit are. Now we've taken those needs and incorporated them into a list of improvement projects to ensure Norfolk really is a multimodal city!

In this final round of public meetings we'll share the outcomes for the multimodal plan and next steps.

100 Years of Clean Water

This year, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Kristen M. Lentz Water Treatment Plant.

Workers using horses and steam engines completed the plant in 1921. Located on 38th Street near Old Dominion University, the facility has the capacity to treat 28 million gallons a day for the nearly 1 million people served by the Department of Utilities.

Earlier this year, the plant was renamed in honor of the department’s longtime director, who passed away after a brave battle with cancer.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 2. Make sure you've completed/updated your voter registration by October 12. Absentee voting is underway. Four voter satellite offices will be open for in-person absentee early voting beginning October 13. Visit www.norfolk.gov/elections for dates and times.
