Disability inclusion in employment strengthens communities

When everyone can access meaningful, valued work, the whole community benefits.

Since 1990, our team at Community Living Huntsville has provided Supported Employment services to adults with developmental disabilities and area employers. People have always wanted to work, and some local businesses and organizations have always welcomed employees with disabilities. Over the years, conversations on, and efforts toward, disability inclusion in employment have opened doors to even more workplaces. Today, we have inclusive employment relationships with more than 125 businesses and organizations.

Employers who embrace disability inclusion increase innovation, business outcomes, and profit. They build teams that work together, stay together, and grow together. They create a culture that reflects and meets the needs of all their employees and communities. And communities gain awareness that people with disabilities are valued and respected employees who can do the job.

October in National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). It’s an opportunity to promote disability inclusion in employment toward a community that increasingly values, respects, and includes people with disabilities as contributing members. It’s about opening doors in an inclusive community where everyone can belong, contribute, and thrive. Driving the future of work with disability inclusion

The conversation around disability inclusion in employment has started to shift.

“Recently, we have noticed that more people with disabilities are being considered for positions for which they were previously overlooked,” says Diane Lupton, Manager, Community Supports, for Community Living Huntsville. “Employers are also expanding their approach and looking for creative ways to fulfil their hiring needs.”
