"Death Sentencing Impact on Family Members" in Collaboration with Texas After Violence Project

TTN is excited to be partnering again in 2023 with the Texas After Violence Project to get the word out on this important topic!  Awareneness is being brought to the traumatic effects  of the death sentencing and/or execution of a famiy member for the first time through the TAVP and we are bringing it here to you, as they have graciously agreed to offer it during our time zone as a Lunch & Learn event.

This program is FREE of charge for the trainings themselves (you may attend the intro or all 4 sessions), with just a CEU fee per session (if CEUs are desired) through TTN for any of the following Boards: IN Category 1, KY Social Work, KY Counseling, OH Counseling, Social Work, MFT (all one Board).

Topic/Description: Working in clinical settings with family members of individuals who have been sentenced to death or executed

Having a family member on death row, or losing a family member to execution, can have a profound traumatic impact on children, parents, siblings, and even more distant relatives. Yet these family members are typically unrecognized and underserved within the mental health community, which in turn makes them wary of seeking help. To begin to address this gap in services, the Texas After Violence Project is offering two educational opportunities.

Presenter:  Susannah Sheffer, LMHC, is coordinator of the Texas After Violence Project’s Access to Treatment Initiative. She is the author of TAVP’s 2019 report "Nobody To Talk To: Barriers to Mental Health Treatment for Family Members of Individuals Sentenced to Death or Executed", and previously directed the “No Silence, No Shame” project for Murder Victims’ Families for Human Rights, which focused on the impact of losing a family member to execution. She has been an invited expert on this topic in national and international forums, including the United Nations.

TWO EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES BEING OFFERED:

1) An introductory presentation about the Impact of a Family Member’s Death Sentence or Execution. *Clinicians, interns, students, and others interested are welcome.

Date/Time: Tuesday 3/7/23 from 12:00-1:00pm Eastern Time (please sign in between 11:45-11:55am)

2) A three-part training series follow-up to the introduction. *Clinicians, interns, & graduate students who have attended the introduction are welcome in the hopes they will be open to referrals from the population in the future

Date/Time: 2nd-4th Tuesdays in March: 3/14, 3/21, and 3/28, from 12:00-1:00pm Eastern Time (please sign in between 11:45-11:55)

*This is for those who have attended the 3/7 Into and now want a deeper dive into the topic with time for interaction and discussion.

*Those who complete the three-part series will have the opportunity to be included in a referral list that the Texas After Violence Project will maintain and make available to members of this population.

Note: We welcome interest in the additional 3-part training series at this stage, but we will also collect registrations for that series at the completion of the introductory presentation, for those who decide to attend after participating in the intro session.  If you are unable to attend the intro session, but are interested in the entire series, please email Melissa Adamchik at TTN: madamchik@tristatetraumanetwork.org

CEU FEES: Intro Session only: $10; Full 4-part Series (all 4 dates): $40  (indicate on the Registration Form that can be accessed below. * CEUs are provided for the following Boards ONLY: IN Category 1, KY Social Work, KY Counseling, and OH Counseling, Social Work, MFT (all one Board).

**EVERYONE MUST REGISTER HERE FOR THE TRAINING ITSELF***
