MEET VICE-DEAN LYNDA JESSUP

FAS is pleased to introduce you to Vice-Dean Lynda Jessup, who was appointed to her current position on July 1, 2021. In her role as Vice-Dean, Dr. Jessup will provide valuable leadership for the faculty relations portfolio as well as for the implementation of many of the priorities and initiatives contained in the Faculty’sStrategic Plan, many of which are related to EDII.

Dr. Jessup brings a wealth of experience to her role as Vice-Dean, having served as an Associate Dean in FAS since 2014. She was appointed in 2014 as the Associate Dean responsible for Graduate Studies, and then assumed the additional role of Associate Dean for Research at the beginning of 2015, and managed both portfolios until 2017. She then took on the role of Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Global Engagement, followed by the Associate Deanship of Strategic Initiatives, the position which she held up until her appointment as Vice-Dean.

NEW FAS EDII DIRECTOR APPOINTED

The Faculty of Arts and Science is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Elliot Chapple as the new Director, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization (EDII), effective September 20, 2021.

Dr. Chapple brings with him over 17 years of experience working within academia, community, and government to the Director role. In 2017, after over a decade of working in higher education in the US, Dr. Chapple decided to return home to Canada. Since returning to Canada, Dr. Chapple has served as the Executive Director of Planned Parenthood, Senior Policy Advisor and Research Analyst for the Office of the Status of Women, and he continues to work with community-based research groups on queer and trans health issues. Most recently, he was Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Specialist at the University of Ottawa Department of Medicine.

As the new Director, Dr. Chapple is responsible for taking the lead on proactive EDII initiatives. Supporting the first guiding principle in the Faculty’s Strategic Plan, equity, diversity, and inclusion, including anti-racism, decolonization, and Indigenous resurgence, these strategic initiatives will foster a learning and working environment where all have an opportunity to succeed.

Dr. Chapple will continue work on the FAS EDII needs assessment and develop an associated implementation plan that includes the creation of a mentoring program to retain new Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Colour (BIPOC) faculty members.
