Join us at the Manufacturing Expo -- October 1, 2021
We'll be celebrating National Manufacturing Day at the 2021 SME Manufacturing Expo Friday, October 1 at the Rancho Cordova City Hall, located at 2729 Prospect Park Dr. Everyone is encouraged to attend so they can connect with the Regional Manufacturing Network, according to Jeff Briggs, SME member and Regional Director, California Community Colleges (CCC) Advanced Manufacturing North Region (Edu2Mfg).

"This is a one of a kind event, bringing together local manufacturers, suppliers, agencies, employees and educators to celebrate Sacramento's vibrant manufacturing sector and the many career opportunities in this industry," said Briggs.

Briggs indicated that businesses and organizations can still register as exhibitors although booth space is filling up fast. "Register now to get your ticket to attend," said Briggs. "Meet the leaders in the industry, see that latest technology being used to produce vital products, find out about training programs, learn which employers are hiring and discover the many exciting careers in the manufacturing sector."

Project Update
Instructors Share Welding Best Practices
On September 11, faculty members gathered at Folsom High School for an Edu2Mfg training program on "Best Practices When Teaching Welding." We appreciated our gracious host Drew Bias, who teaches Folsom's Manufacturing and Innovation Program.

Tom Bell, who runs the Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) Shop at UC Davis presented, explained Steve Dicus, California Community College (CCC) North Region Advanced Manufacturing initiative.

"The BAE Shop provides support services to UC Davis Research Projects through the design and fabrication of equipment," said Dicus. "Tom teaches the engineering students how to weld and fabricate their designs and projects. Tom did a masterful job of dispensing very valuable information to our group on welding best practices."

Teachers indicated that they gained ideas from the training that they can immediately implement in their labs. Nine teachers from eight different high school districts in the Sacramento region attended in addition to six student teachers from UC Davis.

The two goals of the training were met, according to Jeff Briggs, Regional Director, California Community Colleges (CCC) Advanced Manufacturing North Region. "Teachers got valuable information and practiced techniques that they can use to strengthen their programs and enhance student learning," said Briggs. "In addition, participants had an opportunity to build relationships, exchange ideas and see another school's lab as part of the Edu2Mfg local Career Technical Education shop teacher support network. We can all learn from each other as we develop the skills of our future workforce and prepare them for manufacturing careers."

The brand new Folsom High School Manufacturing and Innovation lab was an ideal location for the training, reported Dicus. "Drew Bias was such a prepared host and most welcoming," said Dicus. "I appreciated that he jumped in and helped get folks welding, not just talking. Several teachers expressed envy at the quality and amount of equipment in the new shop."

Edu2Mfg is offering these train the trainer sessions on the second Saturday of each month. The next training will be at Rocklin High School on Saturday, October 9. The focus will be troubleshooting and understanding the integration of the CNC Machine with the CAD and post processor software. Contact Jeff Briggs to learn more.
Golden Sierra Hosts Advisory Meeting October 12
The CTE department at Golden Sierra Junior Senior High School in Garden Valley is holding a fall advisory meeting on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 6 PM. Pete DeLosa, Engineering Design Teacher & CTE Department Chair, indicated that the meeting will start with a meet and greet behind the school near the auto shop.

"We plan to grill something and beverages will be provided," said DeLosa. "Afterwards, we will break out into groups by subject area. For the engineering program, I am excited to share the updates we have made since our last meeting and what we are working on going forward." Please RSVP to Pete pdelosa@bomusd.org so they can plan for refreshments.
Folsom High School Opens Manufacturing Lab
Folsom Cordova Unified School District's new Career Technical Education (CTE) building is now open at Folsom High School. The District hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 14, 2021 to celebrate with local dignitaries, industry partners and those instrumental in creating the space.

The $12 million, state-of-the-art building will be a home to students developing skills in product innovation and design, engineering design, architectural design and other crucial CTE pathways. The training will prepare students for some of the most in-demand jobs in today's market. Learn more about CTE in FCUSD and check out photos from the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Autodesk® Allows Educators to Assign License to Class
In response to the requests from teachers, Autodesk® is now allowing instructors to batch-assign their education license.

This means that educators will be able to assign their Autodesk education license to a class of students. In the past, each student had to go through the verification process themselves and it could be a tedious process. This new process is already live.
Virtual Machines for Welding Instruction
Mark Martin, Regional Director, California Community Colleges (CCC) Advanced Manufacturing Bay Area Region, is setting up virtual learning tools for teachers to use.

"I'm in the final phases of getting the American Welding Society (AWS) virtual machines (VM's) up and running for Autodesk/PLTW and Adobe software," said Martin. "This will be useful for any students doing distance learning or for students who want to work on the software after class hours at home."

Below are the three different VM's being offered. He requests that teachers fill out this survey so he knows which schools are interested in using the VM's. There is also information on the survey about how to get started.

There is one variable that will be based on the school name that Martin will assign to your school. Martin asks teachers to get the one's set up that they need and test them out. And, then let Martin know if you experience any issues.

  • VM1 - Autodesk -- PLTW software (AutoCAD 2022, Inventor 2022, InventorCAM, Maya 2022, RevIt 2022; PLTW SW - Bridge Designer, CNCMotion: Benchmill 6000, FlowArm PLTW 4, MDSolids, RobotC, VexCode 5)

  • VM 2- Adobe CC -- Package 1 software (After Effects 2021, Dreamweaver 2021, Illustrator 2021, InDesign 2021, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop 2021, Premiere Pro 2021)

  • VM 3- Adobe CC -- Package 2 software (After Effects 2021, Illustrator 2021, Media Encoder, Photoshop 2021, Premiere Rush)

Encourage Students to Enter Autodesk® Design Competition
Autodesk® Fusion 360® is offering a design competition for students to practice and show off their CAD skills. They can also build their portfolio and have a chance to win prizes.

Students are challenged to design a product in Fusion 360 to improve the back to school experience. They can design from any point of view: student, faculty, friend or family. Examples may include dorm room decor, backpack accessories, improvements on existing classroom items or anything else that helps in the transition back to school.

Learn about the Autodesk Competition. The deadline is October 18, 2021.
