MAYOR'S UPDATE
From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin
Did you see the exciting news? Our Parks Department is “Going Green?" We are protecting the environment, one park at a time, with electric lawn equipment, bought locally from Ossining Lawn Mower.

Our new battery-powered tools are more sustainable and do not rely on the use of fossil fuels. By not producing carbon emissions, we, in turn, will lower the Village’s carbon footprint. In addition, noise pollution emitted from these tools is reduced by nearly 50-70%.

We are rolling out this new equipment at Sparta Park, Snowden Park, Williams Street Tot Lot, Arthur Jones Park, and Richard Wishnie Park.

Sustainability, resilience, and conservation are goals key to the Village of Ossining. Under my administration, we are implementing positive practical environmental practices not seen before in our Village. Transitioning our lawn maintenance equipment to electric power adds to our growing list of projects: Transitioning our fleet to electric or hybrid vehicles, planting trees, solarizing our operations center and the commuter parking lot, and hopefully adding electric bikes to this list. We are on our way to making Ossining the Greenest Village in the Country.
Good news regarding parking near the train station! This past Monday, we announced that (2) new zones were added to the Passport Parking App. These are Quimby Street West (Zone 91413) and Quimby Street East (Zone 91414) for parking near the Ossining Train Station.

  • Quimby Street West (Zone 91413) will operate Monday through Sunday, 24 hours daily. That means folks who wish to park in any of these (21) spots at any time (except holidays) will be charged $1 per hour for a maximum of 24 consecutive hours.
  • Quimby Street East (Zone 91414) will operate Monday through Friday between 7AM and 7PM (except holidays). For this lot, folks who wish to park in any of these (36) spots between those hours will be charged $4.75 for the day. For the opposite hours (between 7PM and 7AM), parkers must have a Municipal Lot Permit (day or night, depending) to park in the lot.

Payment for these spots is only accepted via the Passport Mobile App. Click here to download: https://www.villageofossining.org/.../passport-parking-app
Red Ribbon Week, celebrated annually from October 23-31, started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. He was brutally tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in 1985 while participating in an investigation in Mexico.

I encourage you to celebrate Red Ribbon Week and raise awareness of living a drug-free life. It’s never too late to speak to your kids about drugs.

This evening marks the beginning of Yom Kippur. I will be celebrating this holiday with my family and wish everyone in our community who observes this holiday to be sealed in the Book of Life.

In observance, the Village’s Legislative Meeting will be held on Thursday, October 6th, instead of tomorrow, Wednesday, October 6th.

Some items of note:
  • We will begin with a Public Hearing on the matter of the request for Honorary Street Re-Naming for Dr. George Hill.
  • Next will be a resolution authorizing the Village Manager to sign the 2023 agreement with IFCA for affordable housing program management services.
  • The Board then has a resolution to call for the Public Hearing to request a Planned Waterfront Special Permit for 30 Water Street (the old DPW site). As discussed at last week’s Work Session, we plan to hold the Public Hearing at the October 19th meeting.
  • There are appointment resolutions for the Board of Ethics and the Environmental Advisory Committee.
  • There is a resolution awarding the 5 Corners construction project to the lowest responsible bidder, ELQ Industries. Related (though later in the agenda), there is a resolution opening a Capital Project for this work.
  • There is a resolution denying the most recent request from El Manabita for a 2022 Cabaret License.
