VAST's "Revolving Exhibitions"
Please contact the coordinator for the exhibit(s) that you would like to be considered for.

"Off the Shelves" exhibition at Emily Fowler Central Library
Carol Stoecker has work at the Emily Fowler.

Carol Stoecker:
"Art has come in many shapes and sizes in my lifetime.  After earning a Bachelor of Art Degree in Fashion Design with a Minor in Fashion Illustration, I have worked several very creative jobs, from District Home Economist, Pattern Maker, Clothing Designer, Fashion Illustrator, Floral Designer to full time Artist.  I have also volunteered in the Destination Imagination program (creative problem solving) to share some of my creative techniques with children.

In 1999, I expanded my creative career by starting my own business painting murals and faux finishes in hundreds of model and residential homes as well as restaurants. Because my business has grown I have become a full time artist and have experienced many types of paints through my murals, fine art, pet portraits, heirloom paintings and glass painting.

What I like most about my job is the variety of people I get to  know!  I continue to be inspired by the things that create an emotional connection between each client and the pieces I
create for them."

SHUBHANGI MANTRI
Shubhangi Mantri is a freelance artist based in Denton, Texas.
She has a degree in Interior Design and began her study in oil painting. After raising two children, Shubha pursued her art again.
Artist Jo Williams, Leo Smith and Jane Jones introduced and motivated her towards the medium of watercolor. Currently she works from her studio at home.
She has had the opportunity to attend workshops with national artists such as Katherine Chang Lui, Fran Larson, Alex Powers, Doug Walton, Don Andrews, Stephen Quiller and Christopher Schnick. She also enjoys traveling the world.
Her paintings have focused on various themes such as flowers, landscapes, buildings and clay pots. She has used her artistic imagination by painting the blueprints of houses. She transforms the blueprint of the front elevation of the house into watercolor. Presently she has taken a liking to the gestures of the Indian classical and folk dance. Shubha feels that to pursue any dream, one has to give it time and perseverance.
"For me, this entire experience has been very involving. On the one hand painting keeps me thinking of the principles and elements of design and on the other it is a highly intuitive and personal experience. After completing a painting, I feel that this is my way of looking at the world, my unique perspective. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than critiquing my own work."

"Stoked About Denton" Exhibition
It is located walking distance from the PAAC at 608 E. Hickory St., Suite 128.
Artist for the Stoked About Denton Exhibition is Kimberley Dietrich starting February 5.

Kimberley Dietrich:
"I am an accountant, mom of one and a painter that primarily works in acrylics but also likes watercolor, charcoal, pastels and mixed media mediums. My art is my own unmasking of my travels through life. I have had many experiences and was "born with a suitcase in my hand." My art has a lot of symbolism and a story to tell behind each piece I create.

My work consists of the animals I have/had as pets or I have been able to see in my travels. There are so many animals in this world from the tiniest spider to large whales. They are fascinating, funny and unpredictable. I enjoy photographing them and then drawing it out to paint. Creating the painting is the most enjoyable part of the work. I use paints first and finish out details with charcoal and pastels.

My development as an artist is rooted in my belief that there is something more to say. My inspiration is in traveling, photography of landscapes and animals along with researching how to make my art better. I am on the board of directors for the Artist Enclave of Denton County, a member of Visual Arts Society of Texas, Gainesville Area Visual Arts, Denton County Camera Club, Friends of Hagerman NWR and Nature Photography Club.  My website is www.art-by-kimberley.com ."

Carol Stoecker is the coordinator for this exhibition. If you are interested in showing, please contact her at storytimeartist@yahoo.com.

Robert Jessup: Squares
February 3 - May 19, 2018
Known for his narrative paintings,  Robert Jessup  has eschewed a representational style in his recent work in order to create ambitious paintings and drawings that aim to reconfigure his world of imagery. Barely decipherable figures navigate a wild and colorful pictorial space that churns with a furious plasticity. the very visceral paint application can range from the most delicate whisperings of a fine brush's touch, to the brutal scrapings and trowelings of the widest knife. Jessup states: "the configurations arise from the battle between the charged forces of the rectangle, the impetuosity of my flailing physical self, and the persistence of my desire to configure in spite of my many doubts and dissatisfactions."

In Sickness
East Gallery, February 24 - March 25
In Sickness brings together artists Jonathan Molina Garcia and Emily Peacock. Each artist deftly navigates between photography, collage, performance, installation, video, and other various modes of making. They are motivated by their own experiences and relationships, and ultimately dedicated to constructing and revealing moments of humanity through pain, intimacy, loss, and love. Curated by Benjamin Terry.
Touching Pictures: Photographs by Kristine Thompson
West Gallery, February 24 - March 25
Touching Pictures features recent photo-based work by Kristine Thompson that examines how images of death, violence, and mourning publicly circulate. The works engage photographic imagery in a tactile manner in order to question when and how pictures might elicit empathy.

VADO - VAST Artist Day Out

VADO is our name for Vast Artist Day Out; it's held the first and third Thursday of each month except November and December. VADO has undergone changes this year, but is still a great opportunity to get to know other members and enjoy the fellowship of other artists.  We meet the first Thursday at the Beulah Center at 7801 S-I35 E, Global  Spheres in Corinth and the third Thursday at PAAC (Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.) The time is from 10 A.M. until 1 P.M.  We bring something to work on and/or to share with our VADO friends.  It is not a teaching situation, but we all learn from each other!

We will begin a new year in June, and the fee is unknown at this time.  We need to know how many want to enjoy this time with us in the coming VAST year before we know how much the fee will be.  We now have to pay GDAC for our meeting at the PAAC, and the more members we have, the less each will have to pay. The more, the merrier....and the cheaper!

Please email me, Fran Shurtleff, at fmrws@centurytel.net to let me know if you wish to come to VADO in our coming year - or if you have any questions.  It will not be a firm commitment on your part until you agree to pay the fee we set.

And, yes, lunch out together after VADO is always a great treat!

Life Drawing Group
VAST's monthly drawing session with a live model continues into 2018. This two hour open studio gives members the opportunity to practice drawing people. All current VAST members are invited to attend.

There is no instructor and participants may work with the drawing media they prefer. The length of the poses varies and there is a break after the first hour.

There are no studio fees, however participants will share the cost of the model. Each individual will be responsible for cleaning up after themselves, as needed.

Group meeting day: fourth Thursday of the month
Time: 10 AM to 12 Noon
2018 Dates: 3/22, 4/26, 5/24.
Location: The meeting will be held in the Beulah Center at Global Spheres Center in Corinth.  Address: 7801 S-I35 E, Corinth, TX 76210.
