Principal's Message

We took full advantage of the beautiful weather this week, spending a lot of time outdoors while we still had sunshine and 70 degree weather. It looks like next week will be rainy and colder, so please break out the jackets and gloves and remember to label your child's fall and winter clothing so we can return it if it's lost.

We're excited about the many ways we're bringing our community together in the coming weeks including our Halloween parties on Friday (thanks, volunteers!) and our virtual Cultural Fair and virtual Book Fair--see more info below for both. We really appreciate the work of our awesome PTO in organizing these events and we hope many families will choose to participate.

Have a great weekend!

Warmly,
Ginny
Reminder about Arrival Car Line Procedures:
As the weather turns colder, we typically see an increase in the number of students being dropped off by car in the mornings. Here are a few reminders about the car line procedures--please share them with anyone responsible for dropping off students in the mornings:
  • Heading north on Greenbriar Lane, please enter the car line just past the orange cones north of Catherine St.
  • Please stay in the car line all the way through the front just before the crosswalk on Chestnut St. Please do not pull out and around cars in front of you as this causes our line to back up and has created some near accidents.
  • Children can exit the car as soon as they are north of the back parking lot entrance. Students do not need to wait for adults to open the doors--they can exit as soon as the car is stopped past the driveway.
  • Please do not drop students off before the parking lot entrance--this backs up our line.
  • Please have students ready to exit the vehicle as you approach the drop off spaces. This means having masks on and having backpacks and materials ready.
  • Please approach the car line slowly to keep our students and staff members safe.
We try to make this process as efficient as possible for everyone and we appreciate all parents and caregivers doing their best to follow these procedures.

Winter Music Sharing for 1st-4th *repeat*:
We are pleased to let our community know that students in 1st-4th grades will participate in a winter sharing this December. Due to on-going COVID restrictions, we are unable to return to our traditional Winter Sing programming this year, but we are excited for our students to have a chance to perform. Each grade level will learn new songs during music class and will perform them to be recorded and posted on our YouTube channel for our community to enjoy. More information will be shared about the date of recordings and how to access them as we get closer to December.

District News
Principal Appreciation Week Oct. 24-30
District 28 is joining the Illinois Principals Association in recognizing the important role of school building leaders during Principal Appreciation Week Oct. 24-30 and Principal Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 29.

This state-endorsed recognition was first approved by the Governor of Illinois in 1990 and is celebrated annually. The IPA also joins the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the
National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA) to recognize October as National Principals Month.

Principal Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 29 is an opportunity for teachers, students, parents and community members to publicly recognize the work, commitment and importance of all building leaders.

District 28 salutes all of our building administrative leaders for navigating the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic while striving to keep students and teachers safe and healthy.

In expressing his deep appreciation, Superintendent Dr. Larry Hewitt said, “Scott, Ginny, Pat, Mary, Christine, Heather, Jenna, and Nora work tirelessly to collaborate, guide, lead, iron-out, protect, problem-solve, and encourage every minute of every school day so that our staff, students, and families have outstanding schools with supportive cultures. Their work is hard and exhausting, but so vital to our success!”
COVID Dashboard, Letters Monitor Cases
The district is maintaining a COVID dashboard to publish more detailed information on positive cases and student quarantines for close contact and travel. The dashboard is updated daily with newly reported positive cases of both students and staff as well as student quarantine daily averages.

The district will continue to notify staff and parents by email when a COVID-19 positive individual was in a school during their infectious period (48 hours prior to symptom onset for a symptomatic person or 48 hours before specimen collection for an asymptomatic person through the date of last attendance).
Virtual Backpack
District 28 shares local non-profit and community partner flyers here in the District's "Virtual Backpack." Please note that District 28 is making this information available as a courtesy and to provide information about local events and programs in our community. Materials posted on this page are the responsibility of the organizations represented. You can always check the Virtual Backpack webpage as a handy reference!
Coffee Talk for Parents Oct. 26
Join other parents and caregivers for a confidential conversation at this month's CATCH Coffee Talk on Oct 26 at 1:15 p.m.

It’s an opportunity to listen, share, and find support especially with the pace of schoolwork is picking up, the weather changing, and the holidays on the horizon. All of that comes with added stress and pressure. Take time to talk about it. When we connect with one another we feel less alone, and the daily challenges seem a bit more manageable.

Register, and you’ll receive the Zoom link shortly before the event.
GBN Key Club will host its annual Halloween Party 4:30-6 p.m. on Oct. 28 in the theatre parking lot at GBN. Click for details
