Volunteer Corps Distributes Hurricane Supplies to Seniors

More than 500 Oakland Park residents are prepared for the height of Hurricane Season, thanks to our outstanding Volunteer Corps. More than 20 volunteers gathered in late August to assemble and distribute 500 Hurricane Kits to vulnerable seniors in our community. Volunteers from Kiwanis of Oakland Park, Chen Medical, and Nova Southeastern University gave up their Saturday to assemble and deliver hurricane supplies, including flashlights, rain ponchos, face masks, hand sanitizer, bandages, and general emergency preparation information to help prepare residents for the most active part of hurricane season. The City Commission was extremely grateful for the efforts of the volunteer corps and recognized participants at the Sept. 8 City Commission meeting. The Oakland Park Volunteer Corps donated 5,343 hours of their time between October 2020 and June 2021. From food distributions to waterway cleanups, the selfless efforts of our volunteers reflect the spirit of our community and are part of what makes Oakland Park so extraordinary! If you're interested in learning more about upcoming volunteer opportunities, please call 954-630-4502.
Show Your Support for the Commuter Rail Project

Commuter rail plays an important role in Broward County’s strategy to improve transportation and mobility. The Broward Commuter Rail Project would operate on the FEC railroad corridor and provide commuter access between Aventura and Deerfield Beach. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) technical team has analyzed potential train stop locations on the commuter rail and recommends that one be in downtown Oakland Park, between 36th – 38th Streets, on NE 12th Avenue. Oakland Park has pursued the goal of a train stop in our downtown for more than a decade. The City Commission passed a resolution of support for a train stop in 2010 and 2019. In a recent citywide survey, 77% of residents support the idea of a stop in Oakland Park. More than 245 members of our community have signed a letter of support for the commuter rail project.

Oktoberfest Update

Each year we look forward to hosting our signature Oakland Park special events, including Oktoberfest. Given the number of COVID cases in our community, we have made the difficult decision to suspend plans for future city events. This avoids incurring costly expenses for canceling event contracts on short notice. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to being able to resume our events as soon as possible.
