Thank you BHS Artists for inspiring us with your interpretation of this year's Reflections "Accepting Imperfection" theme. It's truly a gift to share your talents with the world.
It's always a difficult decision for the judges, and this year was no exception. The following lists the awards for the local BHS entries. Those marked with an asterisk will be moving on to the BSD 405 District level competition. Results from District judging should be available in February, so students with advancing entries will be updated then.
Each one of you who contributed your work has something important to share, and we hope that you will continue to create.

With gratitude,

I-Connect to Feature "Try Harder!" & Panel Discussion
Join us on Wednesday, January 22, from 8:15-10:15 a.m. at the Bellevue High School (BHS) Performing Arts Center for a screening of the documentary "Try Harder!" followed by an insightful panel discussion about college application mania. All BHS parents and caregivers are welcome.
Guest Speakers:
- Lisa Hansen, BHS College and Career Advisor
- Mary Beth Smith, BHS School Counselor (Des-Ki)
- Sarah Manesh Berger, BHS School Counselor (N-Sta)
Missed the original showing of “Try Harder!” last February? It drew the largest I-Connect audience of the year! Now's your chance to see the abridged 60-minute version. This event is perfect for parents of students who will apply to college, or who have recently navigated the process.
| |
Synopsis of “Try Harder!”:
At Lowell High School, the top public high school in San Francisco, the seniors are stressed out. As they prepare for the emotionally draining college application process, students are keenly aware of the intense competition for the few open spots in their dream colleges. At Lowell — where cool kids are nerds, nearly everyone has an amazing talent, and most of the student body is Asian American — the things that usually make a person stand out can feel commonplace. With humor and heart, director Debbie Lum captures the reality of the American college application process, and the intersection of class, race, and educational opportunity, as young adults navigate an ever-demanding rite of passage.
Variety called "Try Harder!" "endearing and alarming." The New York Times said it has "all the energy of a high-stakes poker game and a reality competition show combined."
I-Connect is a community engagement program made possible by your donations to PTSA.

Wolverine Guard (WG) is a Bellevue High PTSA sponsored award that recognizes students who perform 100+ hours of community service in the 12-month period from May 1st to April 30th of each school year. Each student who reports 100 or more approved hours will earn the Wolverine Guard Community Service Award. Last year 116 Bellevue High students earned Wolverine Guard, with Wolverine Guard recipients completing over 14,000 combined hours of service in our community.
- ALL BHS students from 9-12 grades are eligible for WG should they meet the requirements.
- Students who earn WG in a given school year will receive a certificate to recognize their community service. Students who earn WG in at least two of their four years at BHS will qualify for a WG Blue/Gold Honor Cord at graduation; students with 4 years of service at BHS will also be awarded the WG Distinction Community Service Award.
- Application must include volunteer time logs. Log forms should be detailed and with signed (non-digital) signatures from volunteer coordinators.
- Volunteering is done through a non-profit organization (usually a 501c3 organization).
- The PTSA WG program is separate from the Bellevue School District volunteer hours requirement for graduation. We DO NOT coordinate with Naviance and will only accept Wolverine Guard time logs.
Applications are due midnight on April 30th, 2025. No late applications will be accepted!
Review guidelines and WG application and time logs at PTSA Wolverine Guard page: https://www.bellevuehighptsa.com/wp/wolverine-guard/.
Any questions, please reach out to Michelle Pflaum and Sherry Fang at wolverineguard@bellevuehighptsa.com.

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful, relaxing, and recharging winter break and have eased into the first week back to school. Here's the Library News for the upcoming week. If you have any questions, want to find a book, have suggestions, or just want to talk about what you're reading, come see me in the library or send me an email or Teams Chat!
-
New books! The January shipment of my book subscription has dropped, come in and see what's new!
-
You may have received an overdue notice from the library -- don't panic! These notices are automatically generated after a three-week loan period and are meant as a reminder to return your library books when you have finished with them. If you need more time with the book, please feel free to come see me or reply to the email asking to renew the loan and I'll gladly do that. These automatic overdue reminders will now be sent every Monday morning.
- It's 2025 and I've got reading resolutions!
-
Super easy: I've decided to admit to myself that I may never feel like reading some of the titles I have on hold at the library, so I'm cancelling the holds to make room on my TBR for more. Life is too short! Onward!
-
Slightly more challenging: I had a hard time adjusting to reading with my eyes in 2024 when my audiobook time was lessened / commute time was made more manageable, so I'm resolving to make myself sit down and read for 25 minutes a day in 2025.
-
A stretch but totally doable: I read 42 books in 2024, but I read 48 books in 2023, so I think it's an achievable goal to try to read 50 books in 2025.
- What are your reading resolutions? Stop by and tell me!
-
How do I know how many books I read last year? Because I log my reading using this handy spreadsheet! (Follow this link to the description and then scroll down for the link to the template and directions on how to make it your own.) If you'd like to track your reading in the new year but don't want all the bells and whistles, you can print out this illustrative book tracker and write in / color your titles instead. Or just keep a list on a sheet of regular old paper, whatever works for you!
-
I attended a library professional development conference in December and the presenting librarian had a cool idea: First Sentence Fridays to get you excited about checking out something new. Since I send these emails on Fridays, what better way to start this tradition? Here's the first First Sentence Friday:
-
"The cool breath of evening slips off the wooded hills, displacing the heat of the day, and with it come the birds, as eager for the cool as I am." — from The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World, by Robin Wall Kimmerer — new book in this week!
-
I had a visit from a student before the break who told me they are working on their zine to enter into the 10th Annual All-Ages Washington State Zine Contest! A great reminder to remind you to consider making a zine yourself to enter! Submissions are due at the end of March, so there's plenty of time to learn how to make a zine. (Watch this other video to find out, what even IS a zine?)
-

BHS GIRLS SWIM & DIVE TEAM NAMED WIAA TEAM OF THE MONTH!
The Bellevue High School girls swim team left Federal Way in need of a new set of ballpoint pens after the work they did at the King County Aquatic Center at the State Meet this past November. The Wolverines practically rewrote the record book, setting three new State records. They took first in the 400 Free Relay, with Kamryn Meskill, Sophie Segerson, Cecilia Howard, and Heather White touching base in a time of 3:18.78 for a new 3A record. The same squad set a new mark in the 200 Medley Relay, taking first in a time of 1:39.82. Heather White set her own individual record in the 100 Free, finishing in 48.90 seconds. Cecilia Howard, meanwhile, wrapped up her season as the 3A State Swimmer of the Year.
