CCMBM Imaging Core Workshop: Introducing BCAB-CT: The Body Composition and Bone CT Analysis Platform

This workshop will introduce and demo “BCAB-CT”, a new open-source image analysis tool to extract 3D metrics of bone and muscle health as well as adipose depot data from CT scans. This tool was developed to support analysis of dedicated research scans or opportunistic clinical scans. This program is freely available to the UCSF community, is easy to install and manage on a standard laptop or desktop, and is operable by users without significant computing or imaging experience. The design of the results archival process centers on easy extraction and statistical analysis of data and on the storage of image masks in a standard format accessible for training of NNs or ML algorithms.

Register to attend.

Career and Professional Development Writing Retreat

We know that writing can be hard to find time for, especially when you’re writing something non-scientific. But we also know there are certain things that every scientist needs to write at some point – like a personal bio, a cover letter or résumé, a conference proposal, or a teaching statement. If you are working on applications for jobs, internships, fellowships, or anything else, now is the perfect time to join us!

The Coffee Chat Protocol

Most of us find it daunting to reach out to a stranger; but most potential mentors start as people you don’t know yet. Whether you’re choosing a thesis lab, seeking research collaborators, exploring careers, or applying for jobs, “coffee chats” (also known as “informational interviews”) are an essential way to find mentors and opportunities. Fortunately, there’s a straightforward protocol you can follow. We’ll walk you through how to contact people, ask to talk, and use a 30-minute conversation as the foundation for future mentorship and opportunities. We’ll provide templates, examples, and an opportunity to troubleshoot your first “invitation to connect.” You’ll also hear from a student leader about their experience with some common challenges of conducting coffee chats.
