     April 2013

April Meeting: Thursday, April 4, 2013

The High School Art Competition will be held in place of the Member Mini Show.  The Denton County Historical Commission has invited the young artist winners (Best of Show, 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place) to exhibit their art at the Denton County Courthouse on the Square during the Denton County Celebration and Downtown Merchant's Open House on April 6 and 7.

This month Jo Williams, president of VAST, is the guest artist and will be demonstrating in watercolor.

If you have lived in the Denton area for any length of time, you probably have seen Jo Williams' nature inspired watercolors, filled with color and energy.  Williams' may paint a familiar scene - one possibly reminiscent of a time and place in your memory, but she adds a degree of excitement and vibrancy that makes your memory even that much more grand.  Jo Williams has stated "As a child growing up in the woods and prairies of North Texas, where I continue to live, I spent hours roaming the woods and meadows near my home.  The images of big skies, trees, roots, rocks, creeks, leaves, and acorns are all strongly embedded in my psyche. As I travel to other locales, I always seek out similar subject matter."  It is these rather normal and almost mundane places that Williams paints, capturing the wonder in nature.

Watercolor is the artist's medium of choice.  Williams said that "Even though my subjects are basically representational, I am not a photo-realist. Once I am painting, the work is about the process and not about the subject. I paint in watercolor because it never ceases to challenge me. I am thrilled with the vibrancy and fluidity of the medium."

Williams has lived in Denton for thirty-nine years and been painting professionally for about thirty years. She has been involved in the Denton area art community for many years and recently completed six years service on the City Commission for Public Arts. Williams and her husband Johnny won the prestigious Community Arts Recognition Award (CARA) in Denton in 2003. She was just recently voted in as the President of VAST, one of many positions that she's held in the past.

Williams has a degree in art education from the University of North Texas and has been teaching privately for about thirty years, including community education classes for the University of North Texas. A popular teacher, she conducts workshops throughout the southwest including Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Mexico where she gets inspiration for her own art. This versatile and accomplished painter currently teaches classes at the Center for the Visual Arts in Denton as well as doing demonstrations for organizations and judging regional art exhibits.

Williams has held signature memberships in Southwestern Watercolor Society since 1991, and Artists and Craftsman Association since 1987.  She is also a member of the Kingston National Registry of Who's Who.  Her work has been exhibited in numerous regional and national juried exhibitions.  She has won a number of awards including Best of Show in the Texas Neighbors Art Competition in Irving and the North Texas Area Art League Annual Juried Exhibition (now VAST) in Denton.

In 2008, Williams was invited to paint an ornament for the White House Christmas tree to represent the 26th Congressional District. Williams attended a reception at the White House for all the artists. The ornament remains stored in the Smithsonian.

Williams has had several solo exhibitions including an invitational exhibit at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri and an invitational exhibit at the Center for Visual Arts in Denton.  Her work is included in many private collections and public collections including Raytheon, Ben E. Keith Co., Denton Publishing Company, City of Denton, and the Greater Denton Arts Council.
