Golf Etiquette - Frost on the Course

iStock-172746732_cropped.jpg

On average, a group of 4 golfers take 2,500 footsteps on the green surfaces alone to play 9-holes. It's important to remember the effects those footsteps have on a course and the unpredictable damage (possibly killing the grass) they may cause. Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. So please be patient with delayed start times as it is helping the condition of the greens to wait for the frost to melt.

Fall Course Repair

Here we are again in the middle of September. I love September! It’s just the most perfect month of the year: cool crisp mornings, warm sun in the afternoon, shorter days, leaves changing to beautiful hues of red, yellow and orange and of course everything pumpkin spice! It’s also that time of the year to work on over seeding the course, aerifying greens and tees and cleaning up the flower beds. The course has been very busy all season so it’s even more important to get those compacted areas opened up for better air and water filtration through aerication. We will be completing that task on October 5. I usually like to get it done a little earlier than October, but this year a contractor will be repairing the cart paths that were damaged during the shoreline project the first week in October so we decided not to close the greens twice this fall.

We have been overseeding many areas around the course the last couple of weeks. That process involves adding topsoil, then a starter fertilizer that is lightly raked in, then seed and the last step is to cover the area with straw mulch to aide in retaining moisture in the top soil. These areas are soft and wet, so we ask all to refrain from walking through them.

There is still plenty of golfing season left so come out and enjoy the colors! See you on the course!
