12th Grade Class Spotlight
Calculus Main Lesson
|
|
from Bailey Greseth, High School Math Teacher
Every senior works with calculus by the time they graduate from WWS. Broadly speaking, calculus is the study of continuous change. Senior year of high school is a time of great change in students' lives - accelerated workload, college applications, questions about the future, etc. Calculus allows us to understand how and why certain aspects of our lives change. Students are given the opportunity to explore how they can apply calculus concepts in whatever area of interest they choose to study or embark on - medicine, architecture, engineering, various arts, race car driving... you name it and you're probably working with some aspect of calculus!
The 12th graders started their calculus block last week and have been grappling with the notion of zero, infinity, and instantaneous speed. We explored three of Zeno’s most famous paradoxes - The Dichotomy, The Arrow, and Achilles and the Tortoise - in which he concluded that motion is impossible, therefore, what we perceive as motion is an illusion. The seniors were introduced to series in which they were able to prove Zeno’s paradoxes mathematically false. It was also a period of time for them to realize they’ve been utilizing calculus concepts all through the grades… fractions as repeating decimals (infinity), slope describing a rate of change, etc.
Keeping Zeno’s arguments in mind, we briefly discussed Galileo’s Law of Falling Bodies to hone in on the relationship between distance and time - mainly leading to the question of how fast an object is moving in an instant. To answer this question, the seniors were challenged by the idea of dividing by zero - because this is necessary to calculate speed in an instant with the formula we had derived. So they are currently applying limits to allow our change in time to get infinitely close to zero to calculate an instantaneous speed.
|
|
The Arrow Paradox - we may see an arrow whizzing by, but when observed as still images the arrow isn't actually moving
|
|
Achilles & the Tortoise - even though Achilles is faster, he will never overtake the Tortoise who was given a head start (the distance between them just gets infinitely smaller)

Decorating Our Campus with Yarn!
|
|
If you come to campus for drop off or pick up, you may have noticed that the yarn "bombing" has begun. The first set of panels were pieced together around one of the front columns of the school.
A huge thanks to those who provided panels to get us started! We received panels from current families, an alum, current students, and faculty. We even received some finger knitting from our Kindergarteners!
If you anonymously dropped off a panel, or donated yarn, knitting needles, or crochet hooks, let us know who you are so we can include you in our thanks to the growing list of participants!

|
More to come!
We want you to be a part of this project! No piece is too small or imperfect... or too fancy! Having some small/odd sizes actually helps as the puzzle comes together. You may even already have something in your house that you could share...remember that scarf or blanket that you started but never finished? Cast it off and send it our way!
Keep the donations coming!

On Tuesday November 30, WWS will participate in GivingTuesday - a worldwide celebration of collective generosity. GivingTuesday is an important part of our annual ONEFUND campaign. There will be fun incentives for participation throughout the day. As always, we are grateful for all the ways that you support WWS.

Last year many WWS families participated in our Thanksgiving Food Drive and found it to be an activity where all household members could be involved. We are grateful to Maria Monteverde-Jackson for organizing a drive for us again this year benefiting So Others Might Eat (SOME), which provides services to homeless and impoverished DC residents.

Brookmont House for Rent
from Kendra Canty (WWS alum parent)
Our house in Brookmont will be available to rent starting on December 1.
We moved into the neighborhood on Jody Grossman’s recommendation when our kids were at the Children’s Garden at WWS, and we have had such a magical experience here. I wanted to see if there might be any Waldorf families who are looking to move into this beloved community.

Waldorf family seeking kind, caring, and energetic full-time nanny to take care of our children starting in January (ages 2 and 5). Our wonderful nanny is leaving us at the end of the year.
We're located in Bethesda near the Waldorf School, and our 5 year old daughter is in school full-time. Nanny would take care of our 2 year old son during the day, and then both kids after 3:30. Looking for someone with experience in this age range and willing to be part of a nurturing family environment. Please contact Parisa with any questions.
