April is Child Abuse Prevention Month!
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAPM). Those most impacted by Relationship Violence are often the youngest . Unfortunately, 65% of adults that abuse their partner physically and/or sexually also abuse their children in the home. Even if children are witnesses to acts of violence and not the intended targets, they can be affected in the same way as children who are physically and sexually abused. Children living in this environment come to believe that this behavior is acceptable. Our Children's Program and Counseling services work to support children to live safe and violent-free lives.

During the month of April, Human Options proudly stood alongside our FRC’s and Families and Communities Together (FaCT), partners in an effort to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. Here are some highlights from this past month!
  • Hosted The Raise Foundation on our FB Live to talk about their work as the child abuse prevention council for Orange County
  • Provided an educational workshop on the Impact of DV on Children
  • "Blue Mondays"--- staff and partners wore blue every Monday to raise awareness
  • Hosted Family Nights at our Family Resource Centers
Success Stories: Jessica's Story
Jessica, mother of two, was fleeing a physically and emotionally abusive aggressor – her children’s father. Jessica’s aggressor would target their son with his frustrations, typically blaming either him or Jessica for any problems. This type of behavior modeled to their children led to their son mirroring some of these behaviors when upset. Due to the extreme domestic and child abuse in the home, and in order to keep herself and children safe, Jessica called Human Options Hotline and entered the Emergency Shelter with her children that same day.

Jessica’s commitment to developing her parenting skills and obtaining safety and stability for her and her children, allowed her to regain full legal and physical custody of her children.

“I didn't think there was a way out. For the first time, I can help my children heal from all the abuse and pain. For the first time, I can help myself to begin healing.” - Jessica, Mother & Survivor
