Safety Spotlight:

Slips, Trips, and Falls

WATCH YOUR STEP!

Slips, trips, and falls continue to be a major source of workplace injuries in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Common injuries associated with these hazards include sprains, strains, and bone-breaks.

Most slip, trip, or fall incidents that result in Northern workers needing time off work happen during the winter months. Cold temperatures and winter weather create slippery, uneven walking surfaces around the workplace – a perfect storm of conditions for slips and falls!

But don’t forget! Slips, trips, and falls can also happen inside at any time during the year. Spills may make walking surfaces slippery. Loose or unanchored rugs or mats create uneven walking surfaces and tripping hazards. A cluttered floor, uncovered cables, and opened bottom drawers are also common causes of trips.

For more information on slips, trips, and falls, see the latest WSCC Safety Spotlight on our website.

Overhead Hazard: Falling Ice & Snow

Clearing snow and ice from a roof? Be sure you are using the correct PPE, including fall protection equipment if you are working from heights.

Accumulated ice and snow on buildings and structures are overhead hazards. Falling ice and snow can result in a serious or fatal injury to a worker or passerby.
