PRINCIPAL'S DESK

September 23, 2022

Happy Friday Tiger Students and Families,

The weather is shifting to fall-like conditions, but the mood and tone at Lewis and Clark High School is vibrant, full of positive energy, with a commitment by staff and students to work hard and assure that all kids are being successful. Each day, our students, and staff as a collective, revisit our schoolwide expectations focused on academics and learning, the importance on being in class every day and on time, and exhibiting positive behavior in the hallways, restrooms, commons, classrooms, and at school events and activities. The research is very clear! A key indicator for a high performing school is the school’s culture and climate. Students and staff must feel safe and secure, so teachers can teach, and students can learn. This is my top priority, as I am committed to LC being a top performing high school for every student.

Also, I want LC to be a place where students enjoy being here and the memoires they can make with friends and staff. This upcoming week is Homecoming week, and we are excited about the activities and events that have been planned by our Leadership students and staff, and for the opportunity for us as a school to come together and connect more as a school community. This is so important for our students considering the restrictions that were in place these past two years due to the pandemic. However, we are so thrilled to be back to a “more normal” experience for our students.

We continue to work on increasing our campus safety and security measures and are so thrilled to have security cameras monitoring our parking lots under the freeway. These were in place starting this week! Please continue to remind your student to lock all car doors, avoid leaving valuables or items in their cars, and to report any issues to our Public Office staff at 354-6888, and they will notify administration and campus safety staff. Please report any incidents as soon as possible, so we can respond in a timely manner.

Let’s keep this amazing start going! It takes all of us, students, staff, parents, and families to keep us on track. I appreciate your support and looking forward to an amazing year!

Enjoy your weekend,

Mr. Corley

Principal

I would like to invite parents/guardians to join me for a new LC Parent Advisory Group.

  3. Please remember for the safety of all our students and families, our south doors are now locked all day. Please drop off students in front (north side) of our building along 4th avenue for easy access. Our north doors to the Commons and the Main Building are open until 8:00am. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Phil High-Edward.

UPDATES

AP Exam Registration Starts Soon

For your planning, the AP Test Registration window is October 1 - October 31. Students enrolled in AP classes have the option of taking AP Exams in May. These are optional exams, but students in the classes are highly encouraged to take the exams to earn college credit and/or college course placement.

The fee for EACH AP exam is $97 ($145 for AP Seminar). Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch can get a fee waiver from Mrs. Meyer starting October 1.

Next week in AP classes, teachers will go over all of the details and order instructions will be included in next week's LC News.

If you are enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) class and have not yet done so, you will need to create or access your existing College Board account (this is only for students that have a class with "AP" in the course title). Your account will give you access to AP Classroom resources and access for ordering your AP exams. This account is not connected to your school accounts, so you will need to save the login and password (LC teachers do not have access to your login info, so if you forgot your login info, you will need to recover it on the AP website). Go to the College Board website to either make sure you can access your account from last year or to create a new one if you are taking your first AP class.

After School Student Pickup

4th Avenue in front of LC's main building and Commons is school bus zone until buses leave. Please do not park on the south side of 4th to pick up your student.

Parents picking up students will either need to arrive after 2:40pm (when the buses leave) or pick up students on Stevens, Wall, 5th, or in front of the Fieldhouse. Thank you!

Homecoming Game & Dance

The Homecoming Game is Thursday, September 29 at Union Stadium vs Cheney High School at 7:00pm. The game is free with a GSL card ($5 for students and $10 for adults without a card). Children 12 and under can get in for free, but must have adult supervision.

The Homecoming Dance (the theme this year is "Under the L Sea") is Friday, September 30 from 8:00-11:00pm in the LC Commons. No entry after 9:30pm and once students are in the dance, if they leave they cannot return to the dance.

Tickets are on sale until Friday, September 30 in the LC Business Office. $12 per individual without GSL card and $10 per individual with a GSL card.

If you are planning to bring a non-LC guest (guests must be in at least 9th grade and under the age of 21), you must complete the Guest Approval form prior to purchasing tickets.

The form is available in the Student Office or you can download it here. Your guest must provide a photocopy of a picture ID or email a copy to Mr. Dang. Completed forms are to be returned to Mr. Dang in the Student Office. Do not buy tickets before your guest is approved.

All school rules and expectations apply at the dance.

COPE Health Scholars

MultiCare Heath System is offering trainings tailored to individuals aiming to advance their careers in health care, particularly as an integral part of the care delivery team. Our program allows students to get a head start on their health care career by gaining first-hand experience in both clinical and administrative healthcare settings. The initiatives are in partnership with MultiCare’s Deaconess and Valley Hospital and cover locations in Spokane and Spokane Valley.

We have two programs that would be of interest to high school seniors exploring careers in health care:

  • Junior Health Scholars Program: Scholars learn to provide holistic patient care alongside Health Scholars, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. This program is offered year-round, with enrollment occurring every quarter for ages 16-18 years old in High School and Running Start. It also provides continuing health care education in the form of workshops and professional development events.
  • Health Scholars Program: Scholars learn to provide basic patient care alongside nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals. This program is offered year-round, with enrollment occurring every quarter for individuals 18 years or older with a high school diploma and/or taking college classes. It also provides continuing health care education in the form of workshops and professional development events.

Booster Club Updates

Volunteers Needed: Booster Concessions need volunteers - click here! We are in urgent need of volunteers for the concession stand this weekend. Please put the word out to your team parents and remind them just how fun it is to spend time in the concession stand.

Booster Auction: We are diligently working on our auction. As a reminder, coaches/advisors/parents, we ask each club and team to put together a basket to be auctioned off at the event. Our representative will be in contact with you to confirm the theme of your basket. These are typically in the $200-$300 value range, but larger teams are more than welcome to do a larger item for our live auction or several baskets. While we have a great core group working on the event, we still need help with the auction committee and at the venue on November 5. We are working on item procurement, ticket sales, decor, food and beverage, advertising, communications, etc. Please join us if you are able to help make this a successful event! The next Booster Club auction meeting will be held Monday, September 26, 7:00pm, home of Erica Traxler, 215 W. Bristol Ave.

The next Booster Club will be held Monday, October 10th at 6:30pm

Donations can be made to the Booster Club via a QR code available at concessions or here.

Please save the date for our annual Booster Club Auction on Saturday, November 5 with more information to come!
