The Suquamish people have lived along the shores of the Kitsap Peninsula for hundreds of years. Taking their name from the word for “clear salt water,” Suquamish ancestors thrived by harvesting salmon, clams and other natural foods. Their robust culture is rich with art, dance, song, ceremony, contest and ritual.
In 1987, the Suquamish Tribe established Port Madison Enterprises as an agency of the Suquamish tribal government. PME’s operations are aimed at developing community resources while promoting the economic and social welfare of the Suquamish Tribe through commercial activities. What began as a modest retail endeavor has grown exponentially over the last quarter century. PME now encompasses several businesses including Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort, the historic Kiana Lodge, three retail outlets, White Horse Golf Course and a property management division. With more than 1000 employees in fields ranging from information technology to hospitality to construction, the Suquamish-owned company and its subsidiaries are now the second-largest private employer in the greater Kitsap area.

The Washington State Senate is moving forward with a bill that could lead to future bans on natural gas. HB 1770 allows the unelected members of the State Building Code Council to take steps to ban natural gas in private homes, apartments and commercial buildings. This bill will result in a steep increase in energy costs for employers and consumers.
If enacted, homeowners looking to renovate their houses or build a new one would be unable to use natural gas past 2030. The bill takes no direct action against natural gas but allows the governor-appointed State Building Code Council to create a code that effectively bans natural gas appliances in homes and businesses.
Please take a moment to tell your state Senator to vote NO on HB 1770.
With more people moving to Washington and electricity becoming more expensive, natural gas is an important and affordable energy choice consumers can count on during inclement weather.
Contact your Senator today and urge a NO vote on HB 1770.

From the Washington Hospitality Association
HB 1837 would allow the Department of Labor and Industries to open rulemaking on ergonomics after a two-decade prohibition. As amended and passed out of the Senate Labor and Commerce Committee on Feb. 24, this legislation now directly targets our industry.
HB 1837 now delays implementation for every other industry until after 2027 except for janitorial/custodial services like housekeeping and room attendant jobs in the hospitality industry. While we were already opposed to the bill, we certainly take even more issue with being targeted while we are still struggling for survival due to the pandemic.
Contact your lawmaker today and ask them to oppose HB 1837.

Update on Washington State Post-Consumer Recycled Content Requirements |

From the Washington Retail Association
Washington’s new plastics law, Chapter 70A.245 RCW calls for certain plastic packaging products to include a minimum amount of recycled plastic.
Covered products include:
- Plastic trash bags
- Plastic beverage bottles
- Plastic bottles for household cleaning and personal care products
Producers registration is open
Producers of covered products that are sold, offered for sale, or distributed in or into Washington must register with Ecology on or before April 1, 2022.
Online Registration Presentations
Ecology is planning four informational online public presentations about the new law. Content will include producer obligations, registration, and the rulemaking process. Each session will be the same, and there will be opportunities for questions.

Kitsap County Reaches Settlement
Agreement with Waste Management
|

A settlement agreement between Kitsap County and Waste Management calls for the company to pay an $83,150 fine for missed yard waste and recycling pickups in the summer and fall of 2021, when the company said it was hampered by a shortage of workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Intermittent road closures on Bay Shore Drive NW and Washington Avenue NW for Sewer/Stormwater/Road improvement project.
Crews are doing various maintenance activities at the locations listed below. Expect moderate delays between 5 and 10 minutes:

Navy Yard City - A, B, and C Streets (MO-FR)

Stavis Bay Road NW entire length (MO-FR)
Expect moderate delays on Blackbird Drive NE from the intersection of NE Fairgrounds Road for PSE utility work. Traffic control is in place between hours of 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. and the work is expected to be completed by February 28th.
WSDOT Project Alert: Construction crews working on the SR3 Chico Creek fish barrier removal project. Temporary speed limit reduction to 45mph in both directions on SR3 along one-mile section for the duration of the project. Governor Inslee Moves Up End of Indoor Mask Mandates to March 12th |
|
Governor Inslee announced today that the in-door mask mandate will end on March 12. Following CDC guidance, Washington will join with California and Oregon in lifting the mandate at the end of next week.
This new date does not change any other aspect of the updated mask requirements Inslee announced last week. Masks will still be required in certain settings, including health care, corrections facilities, and long-term care facilities. The Washington State Department of Health will be issuing new guidance for K-12 schools next week so schools can prepare to implement updated safety protocols.
State policies do not change federal requirements, which continue to include wearing masks on public transit.

Kitsap County Health District is now posting a regularly updated list of COVID-19 vaccine providers in Kitsap County. This list can be found here.
With the new wave of cases due to the Omicron variant, testing availability and resources are being strained both locally and nationally. Testing appointments or at-home tests may be difficult to find. Please be patient as you seek a test and plan well in advance if you need a test to participate in activities such as travel. KPHD has updated our list of organizations providing COVID-19 testing in Kitsap County here.

Little does he know Sarah is an unconventional woman of her time, and very different from his former wife. |
