SCOTCH WEEK:
Single Malt vs Blended Scotch
What is the difference between Single Malt and Blended Scotch? To be a Single Malt Scotch, the whisky in that bottle must be from one distillery and only made from malted barley. That is it. Single Malt Scotch can be blended across different years in large or small batches. Blended Scotch is commonly various single malt or grain whiskies purchased from other distilleries and blended together. The art of blending can often create a product that is greater than the sum of its parts. Or, at a mass production scale it can create mediocre product, which resulted in many people thinking Blended Scotch is inferior to Single Malt. This week we are featuring a few of our favorites to highlight the best of both.

Johnnie Walker Green Label 15yr Blended Scotch
Sale $63.99 Reg. $69.99
A harmonious blend, created with only Single malt whiskies including Talisker from the Isle of Skye for its intense smoke and spiciness, Linkwood from Speyside for freshness and vibrancy, Cragganmore which brings fragrance and maltiness, and Caol Ila from Islay for its big maritime character.

Glenfiddich 12yr Single Malt Scotch
Sale $39.99 Reg. $52.99
Flowing in the Valley of the Deer since 1887, our family’s signature expression is the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky. With a unique freshness from the same Highland spring water we’ve used since 1887, its distinctive fruitiness comes from the high cut point William Grant always insisted upon. Carefully matured in the finest American oak and European oak sherry casks for at least 12 years, it is mellowed in oak marrying tuns to create its sweet and subtle oak flavours. Creamy with a long, smooth and mellow finish, our 12 Year Old is the perfect example of Glenfiddich’s unique Speyside style and is widely proclaimed the best dram in the valley.

James Buchanan's Special Reserve 18yr Blended Scotch
Sale $99.99 Reg. $109.99
Buchanan's 18 Special Reserve Whisky is a blend of grain whiskies and single malts aged for at least 18 years in oak barrels that used to hold sherry. With a silky and delicate liquid, Buchanan’s 18 Special Reserve Whisky is a distinctive rich and well-rounded whisky with flavors of citrus, nuts, honey and oak. Buchanan’s 18 Year Old Special Reserve’s is an icon of excellence among Scotch connoisseurs.

The Glenrothes 18yr Single Malt Scotch
Sale $159.99 Reg. $174.99
A complex and well-rounded expression, matured only in sherry seasoned oak casks, a high proportion first fill. Bottled at natural colour with a sweet vanilla, pear and fresh ginger character. “It takes time and teamwork to deliver a product like The Glenrothes 18 Year Old. All of us that have had an input into its creation and maturation are extremely proud of this sophisticated whisky.” Alasdair Anderson, Distillery Manager.

Black Bull 21yr Blended Scotch
Sale $129.99 Reg. $149.99
Black Bull is still blended to the same formula today as was used in the very beginning, using a large percentage of quality Speyside and Highland malts, matured in sherry and bourbon casks, blended to a high malt to grain ratio, and finally bottled at a robust 50% abv. Black Bull 21 is unfettered by chill filtration, allowing the character of each carefully selected 21 year old whisky to shine through to its full potential, resulting in a unique blend that is outstanding in its field.

Glenfarclas 25yr Single Malt Scotch
Sale $179.99 Reg. $199.99
Here we have an absolute classic Speysider from a long-time family-owned distillery. This 25 year old single malt from Glenfarclas spent its days in 100% Oloroso sherry casks. It’s complex and delicately sherried, a whisky that’s sure not to disappoint. It won gold at the 2019 International Spirits Challenge and makes a great after dinner treat.

Want to learn more about Scotch? Check out our guided tasting with Ed Kohl, a 40 year veteran of the Scotch industy on September 27th at 6pm. We will be tasting various Malts from the four major regions in Scotland, Islay, Speyside, Highlands, and Lowlands. Just $20 a ticket and $10 goes back toward any purchase of sampled products that evening. Call the store at 815-877-9463 for tickets!

Tannins are rounded out by the ripeness of the berries for a texturous but smooth mouth feel. ALENTEJO WINE

Responsible for a majority of Portugal’s fine wine production—and over half of the world’s cork production—Alentejo represents a major force in Portugal’s wine industry. This southern Portugese region is characterized by stretches of rolling plains and vineyards dotted with majestic cork oaks. Access to land enables the farmers of Alentejo to produce wines in great economies of scale, without compromising quality, compared to those regions to the north. The region of Alentejo indeed covers a third of the country.

The 2019 Chardonnay is compelling. BEERS OF THE WEEK:
OKTOBERFEST SHOWDOWN
It's Oktoberfest beer season!

A Brief History: Oktoberfest in September?
The official Oktoberfest celebration held in Munich, Germany commemorates the October 12, 1810 wedding of the Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. This event is celebrated every year with a two weeklong beer holiday we know as Oktoberfest. Initially held entirely in October, the start of Oktoberfest has been gradually pushed earlier and earlier into September to take advantage of nicer weather. Oktoberfest now begins the third week in September and ends in early October - usually the first Sunday of the month.

Marzen vs Festbier
The traditional beer style of Oktoberfest is Marzen (March beer), a medium to full-bodied, amber-colored lager with a toasty malt character and light caramel sweetness. Marzen is brewed in March of each year and lagered through the summer to be released in September. It's this style that is most associated with Oktoberfest here in the United States. Nine times out of ten, if you order something labeled Oktoberfest it's going to be made in the Marzen style.

In recent decades, however, the Festbier style has emerged as the official Oktoberfest beer of German brewers, especially those in Munich. Still a lager, the Festbier style is paler in color - a medium to deep gold - with softer, honeyed and floral notes. Think of it as a Helles with some richness and you're pretty close.

A fun Oktoberfest fact:
Only breweries located within Munich, Germany are allowed to participate in the official Oktoberfest event. This current list includes: Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten. As such, only these six breweries may label their beer as Oktoberfest (in Germany). Because both Ayinger and Weihenstephan are located outside of Munich, their beers make no reference to the term Oktoberfest. In Germany, Ayinger Oktober Fest-Marzen is actually sold unfiltered under the label Kirtabier.
