Opportunities for Service and Sharing

Focus on the Season:

16th Sunday after Pentecost

September 25: Consideration of and care for those in need (especially those “at our gate,” visible to us, of whom we are aware) is an essential component of good stewardship. It is in the sharing of wealth that we avoid the snare of wealth. It is the one whom death could not hold—who comes to us risen from the dead—who can free us from the death grip of greed.

In Our Prayers

The Prayer List is now available in the Weekly eNews. Please click on the link under "Prayer List" which is located in the sidebar. If you have prayer requests, please send them to us at CLC, for inclusion on our prayer list.

Luke 16:19-31 (NRSV)

Read Luke 16:19-31 on biblegateway.com

Devotion

In my parish calling, I often sought to hold people accountable for attending church regularly and regularly giving either financially or in other ways—a parish rule was that persons who did not attend or give over a two-year period were to be placed on an “inactive” list. A friend once told me, however, that this just meant that they were placed on a different “responsibility” list, not dropped from membership. Luke’s story teaches about divine judgment and the resurrection. The rich man in Jesus’ parable is not named, but Lazarus is. The rich man had good things and now is in anguish. Lazarus had evil things and now is comforted in heaven. Christ teaches his followers how to understand the scriptures and the promises of God in light of their fulfillment in him. We are called to invite people to repent and trust in God’s mercy. Yet God does not give up easily on the lost, or even the inactive members of our congregations.

Prayer

Gracious God, may we hear the scriptures in the light of your son fulfilling them. May we be gracious in our responses to others as you are gracious in your response to us. Amen.

Music for the Reformation

MUSIC FOR THE REFORMATION

Sarah Williams, organist

Friday, October 28th, 7:00 p.m.

St. John Lutheran Church

10099 N. SR-37, Elwood IN 46036

This hour-long concert by Sarah Williams features Reformation-themed organ, vocal, and piano music, and includes gospel settings of Give Me Jesus, Amazing Grace, and This Little Light of Mine, as well as music by famous Lutheran composers like J.S. Bach and Paul Manz. Oh, and we’ll sing A Mighty Fortress too! Come for an evening of uplifting and energizing music. Bring a friend! A free-will offering will be taken to support St. John Lutheran Church. A reception follows the concert.

About Sarah Williams

Sarah is the organist at St. John Lutheran Church, Elwood IN. She has been a church organist for thirty years, beginning her career at age fourteen in Minnesota. She has a bachelor of music degree in organ performance from St. Olaf College, Northfield MN where she studied organ with Dr. John Ferguson, and a master of music degree in organ performance from the IU School of Music (now Jacobs School of Music), Bloomington IN where she studied with Dr. Larry Smith. She teaches piano and organ lessons in the Carmel/Zionsville area and is a frequent singer (cantor) in worship at Christ Lutheran Church, Kokomo IN.

A life-long Lutheran, Sarah enjoys interpreting hymns by improvising and playing alternate arrangements that capture the mood and imagery of the hymn texts, as well as selecting music for worship that illumines the scriptures and inspires the congregation in their faith and in their singing.

Music at Christ

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Christ Lutheran Church will again sponsor Music at Christ, a Fine Arts Series for the 2022-2023 season. This year will mark our sixteenth season of concerts! We sponsor this series to enrich the cultural life of the community by featuring outstanding performers and compositions which would not otherwise be heard locally. We believe that the best of music, along with the other arts, is a vital expression of humanity's aspirations toward the highest values, and an important channel through which the human spirit is fed.

We are pleased to offer a great variety of music in these concerts: music for piano, organ, violin, choir, flute, and bassoon. We will offer four Advent Recitals and five Lenten Recitals this season. We invite you to our first concert of the season on Friday, September 30. Please join us!

In order to offer Music at Christ, we need the financial support of many interested persons, as these expenses are not covered by our regular church budget. We will be most grateful if you can make a donation.

Please mark your check with Fine Arts Series Fund on the memo line. In the programs, we will list all series patrons. Please click the purple-colored button below for a digital copy of the brochure.

The concert brochure for the 2022-2023 season has been mailed and you should receive your copy soon! If you have not received one and would like one, please contact Thomas Dearchs. Thank you for your interest in the series and for your financial support!

SOAP. Do any of us use this product daily? A deli rack of ribs may be purchased with 'food stamps' but not one soap or paper product. This area of our pantry is nearly empty so let's fill it up. Soaps include laundry, dish soap, and bar soap. Other needs are cereal, canned meats (tuna, chicken), dry pasta and sauce and TOILET TISSUE.
