Welcome to The Vector Newsletter: Admitted Student Edition!

This newsletter is sent to students who have been admitted to the University of Michigan School of Public Health. We know that there is a lot to think about as you consider graduate school. You can expect to receive The Vector every couple of weeks, and we hope it will serve as a one-stop shop for helpful resources, important dates, and reminders. Our admitted student webpage is another great resource for you!

The Vector is composed by Michigan Public Health’s Office for Student Engagement and Practice (OSEP). You may have interacted with the OSEP team as a prospective student. OSEP also manages many current student support services including student life and academic support.
Choosing the next step in your education is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. We are committed to demonstrating to you why Michigan Public Health is the right place for you through our Admitted Graduate Student Experience.

We invite you to join our series of virtual events. You will receive key insights into the Michigan Public Health community from school leadership, learn about resources and opportunities to enhance your studies, and interact with faculty, staff, and current students from your admitting department or program.

We encourage you to register for both the School of Public Health Admitted Student Welcome and the welcome session hosted by your admitting department. All virtual sessions will be recorded and shared with those who cannot attend the live events.

As a reminder, our School of Public Health Admitted Student Welcome is coming up next week on Friday, March 11.

Student Experience
From the Classroom to the Field: Public Health Practice

Experience outside the classroom is as important as learning inside the classroom. It provides you the opportunity to apply your newly acquired knowledge to problems and tasks you might encounter as a professional in public health, as well as the skills needed to build meaningful, collaborative relationships with communities you serve.

At the University of Michigan School of Public Health, we know how important this is, especially as we prepare tomorrow’s leaders in a variety of public health careers. Our Office of Public Health Practice offers a wide variety of resources and opportunities to build vital skills and develop as a professional.

Public Health Practice provides practice opportunities for Michigan Public Health students in partnership with public health practitioners in governmental and community-based organizations in Michigan and beyond. Read more below to find out how you can get involved once you start at Michigan Public Health this fall!

As a University of Michigan School of Public Health student, you are immediately connected to your alumni network—a community of over 17,000 professionals living in all 50 states and more than 110 countries across the globe. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to meet alumni in and out of the classroom, with nearly 1,000 alumni mentoring students, visiting campus to recruit for position openings, and serving as career panelists and guest speakers. Michigan Public Health alumni are committed to your success and experience as a student.

Michigan Public Health has a schoolwide mentoring program to help grow connections across our community. This year’s mentoring programs brought together around 700 students and alumni.
Sarah Gharib, who recently completed an MS in Environmental Health Sciences, and her mentor, Dennis Hussey, MPH ’76, found their mentoring relationship to be extremely valuable.

"Thanks to my mentor’s advice, I’ve saved a lot of time and been able to focus my research in more efficient ways, which has allowed me to learn more in the process.” - Sarah Gharib
