Chair's Message

This month, we celebrate the important and unique role of family physicians in primary care on World Family Doctor Day on May 19th. This day is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of our family physicians and primary care teams locally and globally, as we continue our efforts to advance family medicine. The warmer weather has finally arrived in time to kick off the upcoming May long weekend! I hope you find some time to enjoy the outdoors and relax with family and friends.

We are delighted to inform you that following the 2nd iteration of CaRMS, we have matched all remaining residency spots. We look forward to welcoming 78 incoming residents to our program this July.

The Department of Family Medicine is recruiting physicians interested in a full-time career in an Academic Family Health Team. If you have a passion for advancing the discipline of Family Medicine, are interested in broadening your involvement within primary care, and thrive in an inter-disciplinary environment, please consider applying. We are currently seeking to fill positions at three of our dynamic health teams: Bruyère, Riverside and Montfort. Please share these job postings with your networks. They will be posted until the positions are filled.

There are some departmental activities scheduled before the start of summer vacations and planning has begun for the fall. Please mark these dates on your calendars:

  • Friday, June 2nd Find your Path in the DFM: New Faculty Orientation and Faculty Development Day. It includes ETS1 Feedback Fundamentals, Change Management, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) sessions, and a Mentorship lunch. Register here. Contact Rebecca Celestin if you have any questions: rcelestin@uottawa.ca

  • Friday, June 9th Research, Inquiry and Opinion (RIO) Day, where we will celebrate our graduates and listen to residents’ scholarly presentations. There will be a keynote presentation by our very own Dr. Kamila Premji, Assistant Professor, Junior Clinical Research Chair in Family Medicine. We will also be announcing the 2023 DFM Faculty and Staff Award winners. The day will conclude with the PGY2 graduation, followed by a celebratory wine and cheese. For more information, and how to register, please email Alicia Campagna: acampagn@uottawa.ca.

The DFM has two major departmental events this fall. Please save the dates for the following events:

Celebration, Ceremony, Colonial lenses and Care of Indigenous Patients Event

On the afternoon of Monday, September 25th, the DFM will be hosting a faculty development event in honour of Truth and Reconciliation week. It includes a virtual reality immersive cultural experience, reflections on our personal and departmental commitments to reconciliation, and approaches to providing (and teaching!) better care of Indigenous patients. Registration and details will be coming soon. This will be the first part of the ABC Leadership series.

Annual Faculty Retreat

From Friday, October 27th to Sunday, October 29th, the DFM will be hosting an Annual Faculty Retreat at the Fairmont, Chateau Montebello. We are excited to be offering the second installment of the ABC Leadership series, the departmental assembly, educational and poster sessions, and a Halloween-themed dinner party, along with numerous leisure activities! Stay tuned for registration and more information!

We also welcome you to join the Department of Family Medicine’s MainPro+ Certified Family Medicine Grand Rounds, via  Zoom, on Thursday, May 25th, for presentations from the DFM’s Dr. Anna Wilkinson and Dr. Gary Viner. For more information, please view the poster, or contact Miya Ismayilova: Mismayil@uOttawa.ca.

Are We Ready for a 3-Year Program?

Please complete the applicable survey, below, to help identify current gaps:

Dear Colleagues,

As discussed at the Outcomes of Training Road Shows, which you might have attended over the last 6 weeks, the DFM will be embarking on a Curriculum Reform journey as we transition to a three-year residency in Family Medicine in 2027.

Your assistance in helping us marshal resources, remediate gaps and identify training opportunities is required. As part of your Post Graduate preceptor duties, we are kindly requesting you complete the following applicable survey before Tuesday, May 30, 2023:

The purpose is to provide a snapshot of opportunities for our PG learners in your clinical practice. Be reassured, the DFM recognizes that individual preceptors' practices cannot provide learning in all those domains that residents need "preparedness" in for future practice. However, the DFM needs to know who is doing what, and where, so that we can provide opportunities for exposure to all CPAs in the most appropriate environments.

The basic survey will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Thank you in advance. Your input and time is very much appreciated. Should you require further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the OTP team at pmodfm@uottawa.ca.

Best,

The Outcomes of Training Team, uOttawa

Madeleine Montpetit, Complex System Navigator

Douglas Archibald, Developmental Evaluator

Marisa Duval, Senior Project Manager

Ashley Mautbur, Specialist, Project Management

Topics of discussion included the challenges of ensuring Canadians have access to primary care across the country and possible solutions for systems-based change, going forward.
