Sunapee Happenings
views of lake sunapee
from the camera lens of Daniel Guilak...
and the palette of Kate Breña
Our seemingly everlasting summer has broken and it was wet and cold out there this past weekend, thwarting “Haunted Harbor Halloween festivities, tho clearing in time for ‘ghosts, goblins and superheroes' to go "Trick-or-Treating” on Sunday in communities all around the area. With the imminent end of daylight savings time, we’re heading into more darkness, but remember, there will always, always be some light. Woodland creatures are still out and about, as deer and bears have been sighted. Chipmunks and squirrels are stashing away a winter’s worth of nuts and berries. Tho the great Blue Heron has not been seen lately, a small raft of Merganzer ducks are inhabiting a local pond... pausing on their way south? and Loons will soon depart for their winter habitat on the Atlantic coast. Note: a rather large Coyote has been spotted frequently ambling along the Lake Ave/Burkehaven Hill loop in Sunapee lately.

November 5 / Sunapee Coffeehouse
The CoffeeHouse Crew
will perform at the Sunapee Community CoffeeHouse
on November 5, 2021

Our shows start at 7:00pm. Come listen and enjoy!
Please visit our website for Covid-19 guidelines

The CoffeeHouse Crew are the folk who labor behind the scenes to bring our shows to the CoffeeHouse stage. Nobody gets rich so it's all done for the love of the music. And many are fine performers in their own right

Here are some of the denizens of the CoffeeHouse who will escape onto the stage to give us some fine music this Friday.

  • Al Carruth is a gnome living in north Newport – a luthier of exceptional skill to match his musical skills and wonderful singing
  • EJ Tretter is an exceptional singer /songwriter with a beautifully gentle musical style and lovely, meaningful lyrics!!
  • Doc Rogers is a living breathing survivor of the great folk scare. Thumbpicker, folksinger and lover of traditional country music.
  • Vic Reno has been playing all sorts of music most of his life, but since 2014, nothing but traditional Irish music. Vic will be accompanied by Newport’s Celtic and Contradance fiddle master, Jane Orzechowski.
  • Judy Thackaberry is best known as our principle emcee but as a vocalist she truly must be heard.
November 5 / The HOP
Julliard String Quartet

Classical sounds and styles playfully foil one another in this imaginative performance from the quintessential American string quartet, featuring music by Beethoven, Dutilleux and Dvořák.

Great Pumpkin! Local Man Sails Small River on Giant Vegetable

It was all hands on deck when a buoyant Middlebury teacher floated the idea of canoeing the Otter Creek in a 600-lb gourd. With the help of a team of pumpkin experts, the full-steam ahead effort made an attempt to carve out a place in nautical history. Hopes were not squashed. Read Article

A point of personal privilege from Project Sunapee. When you think of the community nonprofit, Project Sunapee, please say a "thank you" to retiring Town Manager, Donna Nashawaty who encouraged, cajoled and urged on... the five founding directors to initiate Sunapee’s own community nonprofit dedicated to “nurturing the roots of our community”.  No sooner done, than she suggested they fulfill one of the ‘wish list’ items from Town’s Master Plan of 1985, to build a bridge across the Sugar River at the Landmark Livery site.   And build the Sugar River Covered Bridge, we did!  From that day forward, there was a summertime “RiverFest”, then an eager crew of volunteers were building corn mazes and creating a "Haunted Pirate Ship” for Halloween festivities in the Harbor. Since that day, Project Sunapee has welcomed Santa to town, volunteered in the schools, welcomed new neighbors with baskets of information and goodies, donated flags to honor our country’s holidays, initiated the Candidates Forum, served refreshments at Deliberative sessions prior to March Balloting Day and most recently, sponsored the very successful Sunapee Farmer’s Market.

We’ve also supported and collaborated with other nonprofits and local businesses to keep our community flourishing.

Many of the initiatives were driven by the daylong “Imagine Sunapee 2020” forum where everyone was invited to participate, introduce  each entities’ mission, seek volunteers and express their thoughts about how they would envision our community in the next century.

If you attended “Sitting Pretty” at Ruger’s Mill, or “Flights of Fancy” (the Gatsby Party), “Beatlemania” or “Bluegrass. Boots, & Bling” you too, have supported all of the above and many more of Project Sunapee’s endeavors.

And now... the Board of Directors of Project Sunapee say “thanks" for planting the seed of an idea, and extends our gratitude and a fond farewell to Donna Nashawaty as she relocates to a southern climate. We’ve gotten into some really good trouble together!
