From the President

As we finish the fall semester, I want to take a moment to wish you happy holidays and thank you for everything you contribute to USF's bright future. It was great to see more than 600 people attend our annual Holiday Open House, an event I always enjoy because it's an opportunity to celebrate our university's talented employees, whose hard work makes us the best place to work, learn and grow.

As previously announced, in recognition of our employees’ tireless contributions, this year's winter break has been extended from Wednesday, Dec. 21, through Monday, Jan. 2, 2023. During this time off, I hope you have the opportunity to relax and refresh before we return in the new year. I look forward to sharing more updates with you in our next issue of Inside USF on Jan. 10.

Updates

I was honored to preside over four ceremonies this past weekend at USF’s Fall Commencement. This semester, USF awarded more than 4,500 degrees to the graduating class, which includes graduates from 49 states and 84 nations. We even had a bride and groom who both crossed the stage Friday evening after getting married that same day. Read about some of the remarkable individuals who are among this semester's graduating class here.

We had an energetic crowd of Bulls fans join us last week as we welcomed our new head football coach, Alex Golesh, and his family to USF. In case you missed it, you can read more about Coach Golesh here or by watching the full press conference here.

I am thrilled that two USF professors, Barry Bercu and Sylvia W. Thomas, are among the fellows elected to the 2022 class of the National Academy of Inventors. These researchers are making significant contributions within their respective fields and we are proud that their pursuit of innovation is helping to advance society and make lives better.

• I was delighted to welcome hundreds of attendees to USF last week during the Great Power Competition Conference, a semi-annual event hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences and our Global and National Security Institute. The conference sessions explored Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an international conflict that continues to have an impact on foreign policy and the global economy. If you were unable to attend the event, you can watch the session recordings here.
