Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget will require construction firms contracting with the state to meet prevailing wage, despite the requirement being repealed from state statute in 2018. Read More

Reminder: Biennial Ownership Report Filing Window Open
MAB Washington Counsel David Oxenford alerts us to a Public Notice released last week by the FCC, reminding broadcasters that a two-month biennial ownership report window opened Friday, October 1 and will stay open through Wednesday, December 1. All licensees of commercial and non-commercial full power television, Class A television, low power television, AM radio and FM radio stations must file a report with ownership information current as of October 1. FCC to Mandate Required Backup Power for Broadcasters?
Radio World reports that the latest Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) from the FCC "could ultimately lead to a new expense for U.S. radio and TV broadcasters that don’t already have backup power at their transmission sites." The FCC has launched the NPRM to improve the reliability and resiliency of communications networks during disasters. It also wants better situational awareness in their aftermath. Read More

William Palmer Pyle: 1937-2021
As we announced last Friday at press time, W. Palmer Pyle, former President and Founder of Northern Star Broadcasting, passed away September 30th, 2021 in Glendale, Arizona, surrounded by his loved ones. During his time as President of Northern Star Broadcasting, Pyle built the company from the original eight stations in the Lower Peninsula to 20 stations that spanned across both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, making NSB one of the largest commercial broadcasting groups in the state of Michigan. WLHT Welcomes Joe Pesh Back to West Michigan
Townsquare Media announced October 4 that its WLHT-FM (Mix 95.7) debuted the "Big Joe Show" to weekday mornings in Grand Rapids. The Big Joe Show is helmed by Michigan native Joe Pesh as he returns to West Michigan Morning Radio. Pesh has extensive connections to West Michigan and the state.Originally from Howell, he began his career in Detroit. Read More

WZZM-TV Announces "Fresh Weekends" Lineup
TEGNA's WZZM-TV (Grand Rapids) has announced a new weekend lineup to begin October 9. Viewers will welcome some fresh faces into their homes on the weekend when they turn on 13 ON YOUR SIDE with the addition of Blake Hansen and Alana Holland.
FCC Notes: WBMI Sale Approved; Aurora Media Acquires Translator in Escanaba
This past week saw some FCC activity with Michigan Broadcasters. The license transfer of WBMI-FM (West Branch) was granted by the FCC on October 6. Florida-based Peggy Warner's 105.5fm, LLC is acquiring the station from receiver Mark Sanger. Read More
