Beginner Bird Walks at the Lab of O

Join the Cornell Lab of Ornithology every Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 AM at the front entrance and walk the trails of Sapsucker Woods looking and listening for birds.


These 90-minute walks are targeted toward beginners, but all levels are welcome. Please dress for the weather. Walks are led by Cayuga Bird Club volunteers.

The Southworth Library - The Cold War Series

The Southworth Library in Dryden has a new adult discussion series on The Cold War, spies, espionage, and the world that was made. Using a series of texts that examine the political and cultural climate of the Cold War, and the stories of the agents who influenced them, the discussions will examine the past and the present world order. Dr. David Flaten, Professor of History at Tompkins Cortland Community College, will facilitate discussions each month based on readings and film excerpts. Materials will be available at the library.

  • December 17, 2024: Spies and Double Agents- the story of Oleg Gordievsky, the Russian whose secret work helped hasten the end of the Cold War.Text: The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War by Ben MacIntyre. Film excerpt from BBC2 series Secrets & Spies.
  • January 28, 2025: The New Cold Wars -What have we learned and a look at how Russia, China, and the United States are maneuvering the current world order? Text: New Cold Wars: China's Rise, Russia's Invasion, and America's Struggle to Defend the West by David Sanger.

International Rutabaga Curling Championship

Ithaca Farmers Market Pavilion

 

The 27th Annual International Rutabaga Curl will be held on the last Saturday outdoor market of the year at the Ithaca Farmers Market pavilion.

 

Sign up to be part of the competition or sit back and enjoy the show, there’s a lot going on! Bring the whole family to this wild, wacky and ridiculous event. You’ll see MCs, referees, protestors, a chorus, instrumentalists, camera/radio crews, and more rutabaga lore than you ever knew existed.

 

Adults and kids can register on-site between 10-11:30 AM. Younger participants can join in the turnip toss! You’ll have ample time to practice throwing and to alter your rutabaga to your liking.


Dickens Christmas in Skaneateles

Step back in time and enjoy the holidays the old-fashioned way with Dickens Christmas, as Skaneateles area businesses give a gift to the public for their continued support throughout the year. Plan now and join the Village of Skaneateles this holiday season.

 

An annual tradition, the celebration runs every Saturday and Sunday through December 23, from noon to 4 pm, plus December 24 from noon - 2:30 PM. Charles Dickens and his cast of over 40 characters will interact with residents and visitors in the streets, stores, and restaurants. Don't miss lively acts at the gazebo, live music, unique shopping, wonderful food, and horse and wagon rides around the Village.

First Day Hike

As part of your holiday plans, be sure to join in a First Day Hike on January 1, 2025, to celebrate the New Year in the outdoors. Gather with family and friends at one of many hikes being held across the state.

 

DEC and State Parks invite New Yorkers to kick off 2025 by participating in one of the many hikes being held at state parks, historic sites, wildlife areas, trails, and public lands across the Empire State.


The 14th annual event includes options for hikes ranging from self-guided treks to staff- or volunteer-led hikes, with some locations offering multiple options allowing people the time and space to enjoy nature’s winter wonders.

Estate Planning Practicum by the Cornell Law School

Cornell Law School is pleased to announce the return of their Estate Planning Practicum in the Spring of 2025.


The course will assist those who do not have access to an estate planning attorney and will provide clients with a basic estate plan that includes a last will and testament, a living will, a health care proxy and power of attorney, all tailored according to the client’s wishes. Law students will prepare and finalize these documents under the supervision of attorneys who specialize in trusts and estates.


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Income Limits: Single: <$27,500/year | Family: <$55,000/year
  • Must be a NY resident within commuting distance to Cornell Law School
  • Must be able to attend two meetings at Cornell Law School for intake and signing from January to the end of April.

 

How to Apply:

Email clinicalprograms@cornell.edu with “Estate Planning” in the subject line. Include:

  1. Your full name
  2. Contact information (email and phone number)
  3. A brief statement explaining why you are interested in this service and some basic information about your particular circumstance (e.g. “I want to leave property to my children” or “I need to provide for a disabled sibling”)


Spots are limited. Notification of client selection will begin in February of 2025.

Library Cards for All Cornell University Library Visitors Now Free

If you have friends or family who are not current Cornell students or staff but would like to borrow books from Cornell University Library without paying for a visitor’s library card, you're in luck! Any visitor, including alumni, local residents, and individuals visiting from both inside and outside New York State, can now request a library card from Cornell University Library at no cost.


Renewable yearly, the library card enables visitors to check out circulating materials, including books, DVDs, CDs, and other physical media. Borrowed library materials can be renewed online or on-site and returned in person or by mail, but they must be picked up on-site.

Donate Professional Clothes to Cornell Wardrobe

Do you have professional clothes that you no longer need? Consider donating them to Cornell Wardrobe, a student-run organization. They provide free rental professional attire for any occasion to Cornell students throughout the semester. Once a semester, they also open a pop-up shop to give both used and new clothes to the student population for free.


If you are currently in Ithaca, please drop clothes at Barnes Hall room 210 sometime between 8am-4pm Monday through Thursday - someone from Cornell Career Services can take your items.

 

Alternatively, you may mail them to the following address, and your shipping fees will be reimbursed: Cornell Wardrobe, 210 Barnes Hall, 129 Ho Plaza

Ithaca, NY 14853.

 

Once you receive a receipt from shipping the items, forward it to thewardrobe@cornell.edu and they can initiate the reimbursement process.

Stay Cyber Safe This Holiday Season

‘Tis the season for traveling and online shopping, and it’s also that time of year when scammers take advantage of increased online activity and higher levels of distraction. The holidays can be stressful enough without having to deal with identity theft or losing money to cyber criminals.


Forbes.com reported that one in three Americans have been the victims of holiday season scams, and 58% of those people lost money because of the scams. Last year, the Federal Trade Commission tallied $95.2 million in losses between October and December. 


Use these tips to protect yourself.
