Yorktown, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bridge crews are scheduled to perform a series of overnight test openings on the George P. Coleman Bridge (Route 17) next week, each lasting approximately 20 minutes or less.
The openings are scheduled to occur nightly Monday, Sept. 12 through Thursday, Sept. 15, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. After each opening, crews will reopen the travel lanes on the bridge to allow any traffic queues to clear between openings.
The openings are necessary to test the newly upgraded programmable logic controller (PLC) computer component that automates and controls the movement of the bridge for openings.
The Coleman Bridge is a double-swing span structure over the York River that connects Gloucester Point and Yorktown.
VDOT attempts to schedule maintenance and non-emergency repair work during travel periods when traffic volumes are lower, to reduce impacts to motorists.
