E-Shalom

OCTOBER 2022

Tishrei-Cheshvan 5783

“Shalom, Welcome to Temple Israel....” is a phrase taught to us by Carole Lachman, a beloved, long-time congregant and bulletin editor who died in 2002. We named our bulletin in her honor and worked to realize her vision of Temple Israel as a community that welcomes the stranger and lets no one stand alone. As we move to a new version of this tradition of communicating with our Temple Israel family, we continue to forward Carole’s vision, love and devotion for our synagogue.

Effective August 2, 2022, Temple Israel's Covid Policy has been updated and is as follows:

Temple Israel shall follow current New York State and New York City guidelines as applicable to Staten Island: Properly wearing a face mask is recommended at Temple Israel, but is no longer required. If you feel sick, we ask that you stay at home. If you have tested positive for Covid 19, as per the CDC guidelines, isolate for 5 days and wear a KN95 or N95 face mask when leaving your home at all times from days 6-10.

Temple Israel’s policy is aligned to the City of New York and New York State’s Covid 19 policy. When and if those policies change, we will follow the directions of both the city and the state.

The (Co-)President(s) of Temple Israel are authorized to impose additional measures as they deem necessary for the safety of the congregation, including the re-imposition of the vaccination/test criteria for entry into the building.

Addendum

Due to anticipated increased attendance at High Holiday Services and our goal of ensuring the health and wellness of all congregants, a Special Covid 19 Vaccination Policy will be in effect for High Holiday Services 2022. This policy refers to the following services: Rosh Hashanah (evev, first day, second day), Yom Kippur (Kol Nidre, morning, children's service, afternoon service, Yizkor and Neilah.
Adults and children 16 and up must show proof of vaccination or present a negative Covid test result taken within the previous 36 hours. Proof of vaccination/Negative Covid 19 test is to be shown upon entry (copy of certificate or phone app). Copies of proof may be submitted to the Temple office in advance of your arrival, if you have not already done so.
We thank you for your cooperation in maximizing the safety of our Congregants and our Temple during the High Holidays this fall.

A Message from

Rabbi Michael D. Howald

As I write this article, the High Holy Days for the year 5783 are about to begin. I love it when Rosh Hashana coincides with the start of fall and the special nature of light as the sun retreats from the summer solstice.  By coincidence, the Days of Awe this year start just as we stand poised between longest and the shortest days of the year.  This moment of equipoise perfectly describes our own situation as we begin 10 days of prayer and reflection on our place in the Book of Life.

According to midrash, only a few human beings are entirely righteous. These are immediately written into the Book of Life.  Only a few human beings are entirely evil.  They have no place in the Book of Life. Most of us lie somewhere in between, with deeds on both sides of the scale. Our task during the High Holy Days is to metaphorically tip the balance to the positive side through acts of teshuvah, genuine repentance and prayer.  In this sense, the balance in the natural world between day and night mirrors our equipoise between two different fates.

In nature, the world proceeds according to its ordinary course. From this point until the winter solstice, night will dominate over day. We, however, are alone among God’s creatures on this earth in our ability to determine our own destiny. The High Holy Days remind us that we can tilt the balance between one future and another through the choices we make. God wants us to choose both life and light, even as the days get progressively shorter.

As we begin the High Holy Days of 5783 together, our family wishes you all a sweet New Year and a meaningful period of reflection and renewal during the Days of Awe.  May our acts of repentance engender genuine reconciliation and may we, both together and individually, all be written in the Book of Life.   Shana Tova um’tukah.  A good and sweet New Year!

Rabbi Michael Howald
A Message from the Co-Presidents

As we reach this month of October, our busy Holiday Season at Temple Israel continues.  We prepared spiritually at our observance of Selichot and have welcomed the New Year at our Rosh Hashanah Services. And now we prepare ourselves for the Day of Atonement - Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur on October 4th and 5th.  Our Holiday celebrations will continue with Sukkot and Simchat Torah.

We have been working diligently to prepare for this time and for the year ahead as have your Board, Committee Chairs and Committee Members.

Membership dues notices needed to be sent with dues collected and/or arranged; our religious school classes had to be scheduled with new teachers hired; additional Friday night custodial help needed to be found.

Our “official welcome back” for Cantor Bernstein was joyfully organized by the Membership Committee, and Sisterhood organized and presented our Oneg Shabbats, food for Tashlich, and planned “Break the Fast” and “Pizza in the Hut” and “Sippin in the Sukkah” as well as their meetings and programs for the year.  Brotherhood planned the evening at Bocelli’s restaurant on October 23rd, as well as their annual programing.

High Holy Day honors were distributed and amended as necessary and continue to be, and the Memory Book to be distributed at the Yizkor/Neilah Service of Yom Kippur, finalized.  Our choir has been rehearsing since last August and beautify our Services with their voices.

Adult Learning presented book reviews and continues planning programs.

And this is only a small part of what is happening all the time at Temple Israel.  If you refer to the calendar in this E-Shalom, you will see the many activities planned for the month in addition to all the Holiday and Shabbat Services scheduled.   They include a Sisterhood General Meeting with guest speaker City Council member Kamillah Hanks, a Sukkot Sing-A-long with Cantor Bernstein and Project Hospitality at Veterans Park and Avis sponsored classes including Ceramics and Art History with Mark Meyer.

One event we wanted to be sure to highlight is the Kick Off of Temple Israel’s 75th Anniversary Year on Sunday October 16th prior to Erev Simchat Torah Services.  There will be Champagne & Hors D’oeuvres on the Patio starting at 5:30PM.  And the Simchat Torah Service follows at 6:30PM.

We thank our Clergy, Rabbi Howald and Cantor Bernstein, the Temple Board, Committee Chairs and their committee members, our Affiliate organizations Sisterhood and Brotherhood and our Temple members for all their efforts, hard work and support that make Temple Israel the special place that it is.

We wish for you and yours L’Shanah Tovah, a happy, healthy and sweet 5783.  May we all be written in the Book of Life.

Singing in the Playhouse Sukkah at Jr. Choir Practice

I carried my older daughter Chaya in a backpack to the first Project Hospitality event I ever attended, in the fall of 1990 or maybe '91, when she was one or two years old. We lived at Bay Street Landing at the time. Rev. Terry Troia led a walk from the ferry to Tappen Park in Stapleton, pausing at intervals along the way to offer prayers, and reflect on the places in our neighborhood significant in the lives of people who lack stable housing. We learned about the struggles of our neighbors, and about the work Project Hospitality was doing to alleviate housing insecurity.

In the years we lived on Staten Island, my family and I participated in many more PH events, often with the Temple Israel choirs. Rev. Troia, Rev. Will Nicholls, who was Project Hospitality's director of education, and I started what was for a while an annual tradition of building a sukkah together with women and their children living in a shelter on Central Avenue in St. George, next to a big parking lot across from the St. George Public Library. The children living in the shelter and our junior choir members would make paper chains to decorate the sukkah, which was simple and flimsy, just four poles, with thin cloth for walls, and some greenery thrown on top for a roof. Then we would all sing, shake the lulav, and enjoy a communal meal in the shelter's dining room.

There was a fence between the shelter's yard and the parking lot. I think that a parking garage has since been built on that lot, but at the time it was just a big lot, and always empty on Sunday. But one year, we all car-pooled over from Temple to find the lot was packed. The ultra-Orthodox were holding a massive Sukkot extravaganza in Staten Island Yankee Stadium and were using the lot for overflow parking.  We had to drop everyone and our gear off and go hunt for spots.  The drivers all managed to find parking, and regroup at the sukkah.  We sang "Sukkah of Shalom," and Pete Seeger's "Turn, turn, turn." We shook the lulav and sang Psalm 118: "Hodu l'Adonai ki tov" - "It is good to give thanks to the Eternal!"

When it was time for everyone to go into the dining room for the meal, I went back around the fence to the parking lot to put the song sheets and anything we no longer needed in my car. A Orthodox gentleman standing alone in the parking lot stopped me to say he had heard singing and wondered what was going on.  I explained how we were celebrating Sukkot with the families in the shelter. The man, visibly moved, said to me, "I just came up from Staten Island Yankee stadium and want you to know that what you are doing here is the true observance of Sukkot." We wished each other a "Gut Yontif!"

Please join Rev. Troia, Rabbi Howald and me on Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m. for a Sukkot sing-along across from the Project Hospitality office in Veterans Park in Port Richmond. We will set up a colorful pop-up kid-sized Sukkah, distribute brown bag lunches to anyone in the park who wants one, shake the lulav and celebrate this ancient biblical festival whose central symbol reminds us of the fragility and uncertainty of the shelter we too often take for granted. Everyone of all ages is welcome to come!  Pamela Rogozin and the Temple Israel Social Action Committee are coordinating making the brown bag lunches and welcome all helping hands. Sandwich making starts at 11 a.m.; packing the bags begins at 12:30 p.m.

Sukkot is our "z'man simchateinu," our "simcha time," the time for joy.  Let's observe the festival with open hearts, like the man I met in the parking lot so many years ago. Gut Yontif!

Cantor Suzanne Bernstein

I am deeply grateful to our dedicated choir members and splendid musicians who have worked so hard to prepare for the High Holy Days. Your singing and playing lift up our voices, our prayers and our hearts. Thank you!

As summer turns to fall a busy Holiday Season for the Ritual Committee continues.

While we are writing this in mid-September, when you read this, Rosh Hashanah will have passed and Shabbat Shuvah and Yom Kippur are next, and Sukkot and Simchat Torah follow immediately.

As we continued to prepare for the Days of Awe the Memory Book was finalized thanks to the computer expertise of Jerrold Gross and Luke’s Copy Shop, the Ritual Silver and Silver trays were polished with the assistance of Sisterhood members Pamela Carlton, Sue Freedman, Blanche Ricci, Pamela Rogozin, Nina Rohan and Linda Brill, white Torah covers were dry cleaned with the help of Shariann and Jeff Ganz and the white Bimah flowers were refreshed.   High Holy Day honors were distributed and, as usual, continue to be adjusted as required.

Selichot was observed on Saturday evening September 17th and included light refreshments, a study session entitled “The Power of Regret”, Havdalah and the Selichot Service.  The evening was led by our clergy, Rabbi Howald and Cantor Bernstein.  Thank you to Libby and Ira Gershansky, Inez and Stephen Singer, Anita and Robert Zuckerberg, Blanche Ricci, Anna Wu, Pamela Carlton and Cheryl Levine who were honored with changing our regular Torah Covers to our white High Holy Day Covers.  And thank you to all who helped with our set-up and clean-up.

Our part-time Cantor Suzanne Bernstein was celebrated with an official welcome back to Temple Israel on Friday September 16th.  We thank the Membership Committee who organized this special evening with a very special Oneg.

We hope we saw you on Rosh Hashanah and Shabbat Shuvah (with guest Cantor Bandman) and look forward to seeing you on Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah.  The specific dates and times can be found in this E-Shalom.  And we hope you ordered your own personal Lulav and Etrog Sets by September 28th and will be prepared to wave them in all directions during Sukkot. We note there is a Yizkor Service included in the morning Simchat Torah Service of October 17th.

Looking ahead to the end of October, we congratulate Mia Iliana Shperling and Alexa Gabrielle Shperling and all their family, as each will be called to the Bimah as a Bat Mitzvah on October 29th.

We wish for you all a happy, healthy and sweet 5783,

May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life.

In late September, we recited our Rosh Hashanah prayers for renewal for the coming year (5783), and we now look forward to Yom Kippur when we are, hopefully, forgiven for our sins  and start a clean slate in 5783.

After our Rosh Hashanah service, members performed Tashlich by throwing their sins in the newly cleaned stream (Thank you, Brotherhood).  Sisterhood had prepared cake and challah bags.  After Yom Kippur on October 5, be sure to remain in temple to “Break the Fast” after the shofar is blown for the last time in 5782.

Linda Brill and a group of dedicated silver polishers (Pamela Rogozin, Pam Carlton, Sue Freedman, Blanche Ricci, Nina Rohan) cleaned and shined all our Torah crowns, breastplates and yads.  They were sparkling and ready for the High Holidays.

On September 16, we were very happy to celebrate the return of our beloved Cantor Bernstein.  A special oneg was prepared for this occasion. Thanks to the committee members and servers who helped: Sandy Mazzucco, Nina Rohan, Pamela Carlton, Inez Singer, Susan Marks, Fern Barris, Inez Singer, Maxine Cohen, Shariann Ganz, Pamela Rogozin, Judy Lee, Anita Zuckerberg, Anna Wu, Barbara Fried, Alina Shteynberg, Judy Scher and Claire Guttsman. A wonderful time was had by all.

Sisterhood commemorated the birth of the Rabbi and Robin Howald’s granddaughter, Sophia Huiya Bracha Howald, by donating a leaf for the Tree of Life in the Temple lobby.

The Sisterhood/Brotherhood Joint General Membership Kickoff on Sunday, September 11, was a great success.  We had a great turnout.  It was a pleasure to interact with our Sisterhood members while indulging in a sumptuous breakfast, and we hope to see all of you again next month to continue our conversations.  We were glad to see that many sisters paid their dues.  Our paid-up membership breakfast will occur on November 20.

On Sunday, October 2, at our General Sisterhood Meeting, we will have special guest speaker, City Council Member Kamillah Hanks.  She will join us in an informative and interactive discussion about important issues facing Staten Island.

On October 15, Temple Israel will enjoy Pizza in the Hut followed by Sippin’ in the Sukkah organized by Jodi Siegel and Shariann Ganz.  Pizza in the Hut will begin at  from 5:30 and Sippin’ in the Sukkah at 7:00pm. Bring your own adult beverages, snacks, and folding chairs.  Sisterhood will provide all paper products and soft drinks.  Please submit your form and $12 pp for Pizza in the Hut. A short Havdallah Service will take place at 6:30.  Rain or Shine!

If you are a Director, it is incumbent upon you to participate in planning one event, serving on a standing committee or working on a special project.  Perhaps you would like to help clean up the kitchen, organize a bring-a-dish to share a meal or help clean up after a meeting.  There are many ways to help our Sisterhood and Temple Thrive.  Let us help find what fits you.

We cannot thank Silvia Gornstein and Judy Lee enough for their hard work on our beautiful Community New Year’s Card.  Seventy members contributed to the card that all temple members will enjoy.   The illustration was created by JD Lee, Judy Lee’s child.

We would also like to express our appreciation to all those who volunteered for onegs in September. Due to their cooperation, our September onegs were very enjoyable.  Thank you all.

Thank you to Blanche Ricci and Deanna Feder who ordered, packed, and distributed the sweet honey bags in time for Rosh Hashanah.

Got oneg?  A lovely way to honor someone or celebrate a special occasion is sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat after Friday night services. Celebrate a birthday, anniversary, birth, promotion, retirement or other simcha.  Let the Temple family celebrate with you. Sisterhood will take care of all the arrangements.  For information, please contact:  Jodi Siegel at jsiegel23@aol.com, or Nina Rohan at rohan.shire@verizon.net.  See flyer elsewhere in this bulletinl

If you have not returned your confidential Sisterhood survey, please take a few minutes to do so.  You may return the survey to Fern or put it in the sisterhood mailbox in the Temple office.  You may also sesend the survey back via email at sisterhoodti@aol.com.   Click here for the Survey.

Please contact Larry Hanibal thorough the Temple office at 718-727-2231 to purchase certificates and gift cards for many popular stores and services.  The temple gets a small percentage of the cost, and it does not cost you more than the face value of the card/certificate.  Larry will even deliver the cards to your door!

Wishing you and your family a very healthy and happy Fall season.

Brotherhood at Temple Israel continues….

Calling all current and future Brotherhood members!!  We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, October 6th, starting at 4pm, when we get together to put up our Temple’s Sukkot Holiday Sukkah.  We’ll be getting an early start; please join us as your schedule allows. This annual event takes place on the Patio when we assemble the Sukkah that will then be decorated by our Religious School students in honor of the holiday on Sunday, October 9th, prior to our Erev Sukkot service.  Later in the week, on Saturday, October 15th, join us for Pizza in the Hut at 5pm and Havdallah, followed by Sipping in the Sukkah at 7pm.  (RSVP for Pizza in the Hut to JSiegel23@aol.com.)

And be sure to save the evening of Sunday, October 16 for our Erev Simchat Torah service followed by the ICE CREAM ONEG, sponsored by Brotherhood. This very popular event will give our Brotherhood members an opportunity to practice their ice cream serving skills when our children of all ages engage in building their own ice cream sundae creations.  Servers are welcome to volunteer for set-up and clean-up, as well as enjoying some of the refreshments for themselves.

Please remember to save Sunday, October 23rd, for a wonderful dinner event at Bocelli’s Restaurant sponsored by our Brotherhood.  All are welcome to join in this very tasty event.  Please be sure to make your reservations! The flyer can be found below.

We look forward to sharing these events with you as we build the camaraderie in our Temple Israel Brotherhood.

We are sorry if your name was inadvertently omitted. Please contact John at the Temple Office to update your membership information.
The Sisterhood of Temple Israel would like to help you celebrate birthdays and anniversaries for you and your family.
You can share the joy of Shabbat and your birthday and/or anniversary by helping to sponsor an Oneg Shabbat on the Friday evening when we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries for that month.
In addition to sponsoring the Oneg, the names of those celebrating appear in the Friday night program and celebrants are invited to the Bimah.
A contribution of $10 for birthdays and $18 for anniversaries is suggested to honor your special occasion and help the Temple at the same time.
Letters are sent out early in the month prior and payment would be appreciated before the first Friday of the month of the celebration.

School is busy and bustling this fall! We welcomed eight new students

and four new families to the school last month along with three new

teachers and one returning teacher. Cantor Bernstein kicked off our

junior choir with a sing along in a special portable Sukkah and

classes enjoyed Challah, apples and honey for a sweet new year.

This month we will pray together on Yom Kippur during the childrens' service where many of our students will be honored with parts in the service. Our Yom Kippur Children's Service takes place on Wednesday, October 5th at 1:30pm.

We also kick off our Shabbat Participation Program this month at the October 7th family Shabbat service. Students who attend at least one Shabbat Service every month October-May will receive a gift card. Additionally, the religious school class with the highest attendance

percentage at services will enjoy a pizza party in January and then an ice cream party in May!

Welcome Back to All.

How can it be that the summer is over!!!!

The Membership Committee had been busy during the months of August and September working on sponsoring a Welcome Back to Temple Israel Special Oneg for Cantor Bernstein. We all put on many different hats to organize this splendid event which occurred Friday night, September 16th. We had a wonderful turnout of present and past congregants. Cantor Bernstein was so surprised to see all of the congregants that attended the service and the special cake and Oneg. A BIG Thank you to the Membership Committee for all of their hard work creating flyers, making phone calls to members, shopping, preparing and picking up the goodies and doing a great job setting up and serving. Thank you, as well, to some of the members of Sisterhood for helping set up and serve.

We are also working on different ways to engage our membership as well as helping our Congregation continue to grow. We will be announcing future “across the generations” ideas for some novel events. Be on the lookout for future flyers and announcements.

Please reach out to family, friends and colleagues…even people you meet during your daily routines, about the benefits of joining our Temple. If you know of anyone interested in coming to services, events or wanting to join, please let anyone on the Membership Committee know or have them contact the Temple office and we will follow up.

Respectfully Submitted,

Sandy Mazzucco

Avis Foundation Trustees

The mission of the Dr. Ronald Avis Foundation for Temple Israel Reform Congregation is:

…. to provide financial support for young families seeking membership in Temple Israel, and to attract new young families by providing learning opportunities, family programming, and social justice initiatives.

************************************************************

The new year has started! We wish all families a very happy new year and hope you bring your children to the Yom Kippur Children’s Service, October 5th at 1:30,  and to erev Simchat Torah on October 16th.

On October 28th, there will be a very special Tot Shabbat at 5:30, led by a musical organization called Tkiya. There will be singing, dancing, stories, puppets, and more, all centered around a Kabbalat Shabbat experience. We can't wait to see you!

We hope many of your children will join the Children’s Choir this year. Speak to Cantor Bernstein if you have any questions about it.

We are planning art classes at the JCC for the children, with the wonderful second part of the afternoon to swim in the pool! The dates will be sent out to you all.

Please remember to attend the Shabbat service the first Friday of every month with your children. It is a wonderful service geared toward our young ones. Cantor Bernstein will be at these services and the children who attend will receive a special gift! And there will be delicious desserts at our oneg!

Remember to check the weekly calendar email to see when the Cultureats Programs will be starting.

If you know any family who might be interested in joining our congregation, please suggest that they reach out to Terry Baver at terryqbaver@gmail.com so they can learn about the great financial support given to all young families by the Avis Foundation.

Sincerely,

Bryn Biren and Terry Baver

Thanks to Judy Pessah for leading the discussion on actress Tovah Feldshuh’s story of life with her mother, “Lillyville, Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I’ve Played”. We enjoyed analyzing their interesting relationship, and comparing it to our own experiences.
