A Letter from the Director...
Friends,
Everyone has a personal story of the morning of September 11, 2001. Here is mine. I was working
twelve miles outside New York City for a technology company. My original schedule for the day changed
the afternoon prior to the 11th. The client that my team and I were going to make a sales pitch to at the
Twin Towers canceled and rescheduled for later in the month. I arrived to work on the morning of the 11th reworking the tasks I would complete that day since I did not have to travel into the city. I opened the door to the office, took one look at the television screen in the breakroom, and the world was different. As we approach the 20th anniversary of that day, many of us will find ourselves reflecting on those memories. It just does not seem to get any easier no matter how many years pass.
Both of my grandfathers served our country in the military. Both of these men were proud Americans. They were never too busy to take their freedom for granted, and they never forgot that freedom had a price. I grew up hearing many stories from my grandfathers' pasts. Most of their memories were vivid, meaningful, and unforgettable. Now I too have vivid modern memories. My memories are not comparable to those of my grandfathers' but they are life changing. Memories that force me to remember the pride I feel to be an American.
I am currently reading the biography Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power by Jon Meacham. I find that there are many parallels in Thomas Jefferson's life to the current state of our country and its leaders. Themes of accomplishment, determination, and sacrifice in this book echo modern American history. Jefferson once said, "In matters of principle stand like a rock." Our country was a rock on the days following September 11, and we will continue to stand like a rock twenty years later.
I invite you to stop by the library to visit our September 11 exhibit, "The Day that Changed the World," which will be on display September 7 - September 17. Join us as the library asks the community to place a complimentary American flag on the library's front lawn symbolizing the remembrance of this milestone anniversary.

How the Lottery Calendar Works
The chances for winning are based on the Pick-3 Pennsylvania Lottery (Evening), straight, not boxed, throughout September 2021. Each day a number is drawn, and if that number calendar has been purchased, the buyer will be a winner. The payout is determined by the dollar amount shown on the calendar for that day. (For example, Atticus Finch purchased calendar #123, and on September 28 the Pick-3 Pennsylvania number drawn is #123, then Atticus wins the amount appearing on his calendar for that day. If calendar #123 was never purchased, then there is no payout for that day.) Winners will have checks mailed to the address written on the ticket stub within 30 days of winning.

September 11, 2001: The Day that Changed the World
Educational Exhibition
- The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity is excited to announce its participation in September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World, a downloadable educational exhibition that presents the history of 9/11, its origins, and its ongoing implications through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks.
- Told across 14 posters, this exhibition includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the Museum's permanent collection. It explores the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and communities at the local, national, and international levels, and encourages critical thinking about the legacies of 9/11.
- The poster exhibition will be available from Tuesday, September 7th to Friday, September 17th in the library's main reference area.
- Patrons are invited to end their visit with adding a flag to our lawn in memory of those who were lost in the attacks.

Bobbin Lace Classes
- Bobbin lace classes are being offered at the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00-3:00pm and on alternate Saturdays from 10:00am-noon.
- Bobbin lace is a type of loom weaving that is used to make lace. The thread for the weaving is held on bobbins, and the pattern is held in place with pins. It has been around since the early 1500's and can be used to make a wide variety of lace.
- Supplies to start are minimal. A kit consisting of a pillow and 2 dozen bobbins is available for $25. After you have tried it, if you decide it is not for you, the instructor is happy to buy the kit back.
- Classes are $6 for the 2-hour session.

Pennie
- The MLNV recently held an informative session about the Pennsylvania Health Insurance Exchange Authority (PHIEA) - more commonly known as Pennie. This educational session was led by Pennie's Outreach Manager, Scott Yeager.

The goal was to inform patrons and community partners about Pennie, its resources, and how Pennie can help the uninsured.

Hear from session attendee and patron Mike Waldman: "Excellent overview of the new PA health insurance system replacing Healthcare.gov for PA residents. They discuss the history and advantages to the program from what it had been previously. Anyone who has individual or family needs for health insurance that isn't covered by employers, should watch the video and learn about the Pennie program. It's much improved from the original federal program, with many more companies and plans available now that it is locally run. The best way to shop for health insurance plans, as you can filter by doctor, location, prescription needs and compare different plans on the website. They are also offering phone, online, and in-person help to understand and choose the best plan. Plans are also much more affordable through 2022 and it's also much more affordable than Cobra. Strongly recommend to watch and thanks to Memorial Library of Nazareth for hosting this talk."

Just a few weeks ago, Pennsylvania families started to receive monthly Child Tax Credit advancement payments as part of the American Rescue Plan. With these first payments, Pennsylvanians received a total of $554.8 million. For more information, click HERE.

Join the MLNV's creative writing group!
- This group is facilitated by a local college professor who holds a Ph.D. in English and has a love for writing.
- At each meeting, participants will receive a writing prompt and be asked to share their responses (whether poetry, fiction, or nonfiction) to a previous writing prompt.
- There is no specific prompt for the upcoming meeting; bring something you've written recently that you'd like to share.
- Feel free to write in any genre (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, etc.)
- Participants may request constructive criticism or just a friendly listening audience.
- The facilitator will share a writing tip and practice exercise. Hint: It will involve M.C. Escher.

We had a great series of community conversations about low-waste living!
We were able to learn about nature journaling, try nature journaling, and, most significantly, discuss the topics of nature journaling and why it's so important to look closely and carefully at nature around us to respect it and better understand our role within our environment. We looked at a milkweed plant and its pods and talked about its history and ecological importance before exploring the library grounds, which contain a number of non-native tree and flower species. Environmentalist and artist Kate Brandes explained various ways to nature journal (writing, drawing, leaf-rubbing, etc.) and showed examples before we tried it on our own with colored pencils and blank paper. We subsequently gathered back together and discussed the experience: what we observed, what we felt, and what we discovered. We explored questions like "What can nature teach us? How do you think nature journaling and "looking closely" relate to sustainability and living as "low-waste" as possible? What ideas from today most resonated with you?"
We were able to meet outside first to learn about the JEEC, an LEED Silver Certified "green building" erected in 2013. We learned about its solar panels, detention "pond"/storm drains, nature stone and slate building materials, "polka dot" window stickers to deter bird collisions, and local plants. Inside, we discovered its recycled flooring, carpeting squares for easy removal, geothermal heating/cooling system, temperature controls that sense occupancy, low-flow toilets, waterless urinals, and green roof. After the "tour," we sat and spent about 45 minutes discussing ways to incorporate green living and sustainability in our own lives. While most are unable to purchase electric cars or pricy solar panels, we agreed on many methods that we can live more "low-waste." Participants shared their ideas and thoughts, including using beeswax-coated fabric instead of plastic wrap, considering what sneakers we buy, investigating hybrid vehicles, etc. We explored the complexities of living in our particular geographic area without some of the resources and opportunities for "green living" that are available in larger metropolitan areas - and what we can do about it. The conversation generated was both disheartening (at the "planned obsolescence" of products and "externalities" - someone has to pay the cost, one way or another, for everything produced "cheaply") and hopeful, as the youngest attendees seemed optimistic about their future and ability to alter it. The conversation got us as a community thinking and sharing.
This Zoom conversation was prefaced by, first, (most) attendees reading the book
Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash, and second, the author Edward Humes giving a short picture presentation and summary of his book, plus a few questions-and-answers. We discussed what surprised us in the book (which was compounded by what Humes mentioned had transpired in the roughly ten years since the publication of Garbology, including the discovery that most items that are "fully recyclable" really aren't) but, more importantly, focused on ways to translate what we learned into action steps in our own homes and in our community. Some of these decisions that were shared include the following: sending fewer greeting cards, sending cards to a children's hospital for reuse, calling a local newspaper to stop delivering "sample" newspapers (in plastic!), reusing wrapping paper, talking to members of our local government, reusing discarded wooden dresser drawers as raised beds for vegetable growing, and joining a freecyle group. We hope that no one left the conversation without new ideas and a sense of "low waste" solidarity and hope for a cleaner, leaner, greener future. |
- In an effort to follow the guidelines that our state counterparts are following, effective immediately all library Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity employees will be required to wear a mask indoors, regardless of their vaccination status.
- At this time, library patrons are not mandated to wear masks in the library; however, it is encouraged.
