Ordination Service
October 17
Ordination Service October 17
for Dr. D.H. Clark

On the recommendation of the Coordinating Council at a call business meeting on October 3rd, members of Northminster Church unanimously voted to ordain Dr. D.H.Clark to the Gospel Ministry and in so doing, bless and affirm his life long calling to ministry, music, and service to God. He has served as a multi-gifted music minister for 60 years in several churches (the last 32 years at Northminster Church. He has been a choral director, director of music, accompanist, musician in residence, organist, composer, and a conductor. He willingly embraces the Northminster ideology that "Every Member is a Minister" and in the past has served in a ministerial capacity whenever needed. D.H described his theology as seeking to live his life modeled on the one who tried to teach us all how to embody the unqualified endless love of God for all people. He expressed understanding of the sacred nature of a church body blessing one’s calling in such a profound way. The ordination will take place during the Sunday service on October 17. Please join us for this special service of blessing .

Opening Hymn:    The God Of Abraham Praise
The twelfth-century scholar Moses Maimonides drew up the thirteen articles of the Hebrew creed, which subsequently cast in metrical form (the Yigdal). This translation represents an ecumenical collaboration between Rabbi Langsberg and Unitarian minister Mann in 1884. This text is set to the tune, LEONI, a traditional Yigdal melody.

Pastoral Prayer Response:     Amazing Grace
We sing a congregational response to prayer, two verses of this much beloved hymn. John Newton’s autobiographical hymn reflects his conversion from his earlier existence as a slave Trader. While serving as curate in the English village of Olney, Newton met William Cowper, and together they published Olney Hymns, which included this hymn. The tune, AMAZING GRACE, dates from 1829 and is arranged for congregational singing in 1900 by Edwin Excell.

Anthem:     God’s Saving Grace
Austiin C. Lovelace (1919-2010), composer and minister, pulled from two of the most well-known resources in hymnody for writing this anthem. He combined a text by Isaac Watts (based on Ps. 96) with one of the most familiar melodies from the Strasburg Psalter of 1525. The opening melodic motif is also found in the hymn “All Creatures of Our God and King.” This two-part setting has added interest and variety provided by the use of a canon (or round) in one verse, and a descant in the final stanza. This song of grace leads well from the scripture reading into the sermon by Dr. Gaddy.

Communion Anthem:    Just As I Am
The hymn is one many of us know by heart. Here, the words of “Just as I Am” by Charlotte Elliot (1789-1871), are set to a lovely melody and arranged for choir by English composer, Bob Chilcott.

I hope to worship with all of you this Sunday. Grace and Peace to all,
Debi
