Boyne Chamber of Commerce Hosting Candidate Forum Tonight

The Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a City Commission Candidates Forum at 6:00p.m. Thursday, July 22nd in the Commission Chambers of Boyne City Hall.

There are three City Commission seats up for election in November. Seven individuals were successfully nominated to run for election. With having more than six candidates, the City will hold a primary election on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. The nominees who will be on the primary ballot (listed in alphabetical order) are as follows:
Ronald J. Grunch
George Robert Lasater
Marty Moody
Timothy James Nemecek
Sally L. Page
Joseph Schlegel
Dean Ross Solomon

The general election, which will decide the three candidates who will serve, is Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Each seat is a four year term

The Boyne Area Chamber is not a political action committee. We sponsor candidate forums because we believe our members have a right to know what their candidates for public office say about issues that affect our community. We provide the forums as a public service, and we are privileged and proud to play a role in the democratic process however, we endorse no specific candidate. Our candidate forums allow those seeking public office to express their views openly so businesses and community members can understand their positions and make informed voting choices. The questions being asked were submitted by community members.
George Lasater
I was born near Advance and have lived in Boyne City for 28 years, where I graduated from Boyne City High School in 1988 and was a team captain in football and track. I have worked for the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office for 27 years and hold the rank of Administrative Road Patrol Lieutenant. My wife, Melissa Lasater, and I have been married for 28 years and we have one son Luke, who is currently in college at NCMC. I enjoy shipwreck scuba diving, local history and anything on or in the water. I look forward to serving the citizens of Boyne City.
Marty Moody
Marty was born and raised in this beautiful community we call Boyne City. Marty graduated from Boyne City High School and has been a successful businessman for the past 36 years in the town he has always been happy to call home. Having been around the Real Estate business for the past 35 years from an investment and building standpoint, as well as running a successful sales team, it made perfect sense to take his knowledge and experience to the next level as he became a Realtor and joined Lynda’s Real Estate Service 18 years ago. Marty has always been extremely active in the community, from his many years of service as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Trustee on the Boyne City School Board, as well as volunteering in almost any capacity on the many boards and committees serving beautiful Boyne City. Marty and his wife Connie have four beautiful daughters, Brittney (Adam) Popa, Kristin (Tony) Last, Morganne Moody, Cassidy Moody, as well as his 4 grandkids.
The main reason for running for City Commission is the need to curtail some of the mis-management that has seemed to creep into the powers in our great city ever so slowly over the past few years. I wish to be a good Steward of the Taxpayer and have no axe to grind, just want Boyne City to remember where it came from a little more, and show more respect to the people that live and work here each and every day. As a man of and for the people I think it’s important to make the City Commission remember that THEY are the leaders of this community, not the City Manager, as he is hired by the Commission to do the bidding of this community, not the other way around.
Please vote for Marty and help him return accountability back to our great city.
Timothy Nemecek
I’m passionate about serving the community and being a servant leader. My military service and experience from being an asset protection / operations manager for 10 years has taught me the most impactful and successful style of leadership is a servant leader who is willing to put in the hard work alongside their direct reports. Currently I’m putting in the hard work and time in serving the community of Boyne as:
• An active Boardmember of the Boyne City Kiwanis Club
• Boardmember of the Boyne City Planning Commission
• Boardmember of the Boyne City Historic District Commission
• Boardmember of the Boyne City Veterans Memorial Committee
• Boardmember of the Charlevoix County Veterans Committee
I also attend and broadcast many other local public meetings, to help share and promote transparency while engaging others in Boyne City who may not have a flexible schedule to attend meetings in person, but have an interest in being part of the discussions that shape the wonderful community of Boyne City. I would like to continue to serve the wonderful community of Boyne City and utilize my skills and experience to be impactful in the success of our wonderful community. I have a true passion to serve others and to make an impactful difference in positive strides. I would be humbled to have the opportunity to serve the wonderful people of Boyne City and to help find unity for our community! Boyne City is a wonderful and beautiful community already, but we do face challenges and decisions have to be made at the local government level to preserve that beauty and success. I believe with bringing my experience and skills to the city commission, we could find ways to utilize best practices & technology to engage the residents and business owners of Boyne City to allow for stronger engagement from the public, which will strengthen the conversations naturally by listening and brainstorming with the public to showcase the value of their voices and opinions. I’d love to answer any other questions and open the floor for discussion. Feel free to reach out and visit my campaign page on Facebook at “Tim Nemecek for Boyne City Commissioner."
Sally Page
I have been a resident of Boyne City since 2005 when I bought my little cottage on Main Street, having moved here to be closer to my daughter Liz, co-owner of Lake Street Market, and my son Josh, an engineer with Nucore in Charlevoix.

Since 2017, it has been my honor to serve on the Board of Commissioners in Boyne City. My qualifications in 2017 included forty years in the legal world, from working as a Court Reporter in Washington, DC, to managing law offices or working in court systems from San Francisco to New Mexico; and ending with managing the Emmet County Prosecutor’s Office for twenty-five years until I retired in 2013.  I handled the daily operations in most of the management positions I held, so I had years of experience dealing with budgets, office procedures and overseeing daily operations of staff.  Since retiring I have operated my own business providing verbatim transcripts of court proceedings in Circuit and District courts throughout the state, and I continue doing so to this day.

Now, with four years “on the job” as a commissioner, I feel that the knowledge I have gained, including operating in a very difficult pandemic year, where close in-person contact was necessarily limited; I have a much greater understanding of the challenges we face, and how the process works, which enhances my qualifications for reelection.
Joseph Schlegel
Have been a homeowner in Boyne city for five years.
And have been enjoying trips to Boyne city for skiing and visits to a family cottage since 1985.
54 years of age.
Now that I am a resident of Boyne City I am looking to be a part of the process of helping to keep it a great city moving into the future.
As far as issues I will have to evaluate those as they come once elected.
But based on current meetings it looks like we will certainly still be dealing with the issue of short term rentals. And I know the current commissioners have already started to properly address the issue. A lot of it will come down to the state laws that are currently under consideration which will possibly limit the scope of what we can do locally.

I do hope to work to balance our blue-collar economy needs with the needs of our tourism-based economy.
Having spent time as a business owner in small Midwestern towns with some industry and tourism reliance I feel I am able to offer a good perspective for the needs of Boyne city and it’s residents.
Plus my current employment keeps me in and out of various small businesses throughout the region which allows me to see, hear, and understand what is going on in the area.
So pretty much source relevant and in real time when it comes to constitutuents issues and/or needs.
Again regarding issues once elected I will deal with them as they come to the best of my ability. And my basic standard in dealing with issues at hand will come down to the question:
Is it good for Boyne City or not good for Boyne City and its residents?
Dean Solomon
Since moving to Boyne City in 2006, my family and I grew to love the area - its beauty, friendly people, and can-do attitude. We truly live in a special place. Two of our three children graduated from Boyne City High School.
Before being elected to the Boyne City Commission, I retired from Michigan State University Extension after a 35-year career. Eleven of those were in the Boyne City office as the Charlevoix County Extension Director and as a natural resources and local government educator. During my MSU career, I really enjoyed serving on the Boyne City Farmers Market Committee, facilitating the Boyne City biennial community goal-setting meetings, guiding the Boyne City to US 31 trail steering committee, working with local organizations to protect Lake Charlevoix and helping the Boyne Area Chamber during their annual planning sessions. I was also a member of the Charlevoix County Planning Commission for four years.
I’m very proud of what my City Commission colleagues and I achieved these past four years. Highlights for me: completing the Open Space purchase, transforming the Veteran’s Park pavilion into a wonderful year-round space, updating our zoning rules to promote housing options, approving new housing developments that will create over 200 new reasonably priced homes and apartments, and approving the Great Lakes Energy expansion and new Daifuku Jervis Webb facility that will create new family-supporting jobs. We also made special efforts to successfully increase the number of residents engaged in our city goal-setting process and created new opportunities for residents to learn about and comment on development proposals.
If I am reelected, I will continue to work hard to expand housing choices for Boyne City residents, protect our wonderful natural resources and quality of live, promote Boyne City as a great place to live and do business, create more ways for residents to have a voice in Boyne City’s direction, and seek funds to complete improvements to the new Open Space.
I’d be honored to continue serving on the City Commission and help Boyne City grow and meet our challenges. Learn more about me at www.DeanBCcommission.com

Mark your calendars for the third annual Pedal, Pig, and Pint Bike Tour, Sunday August 1, 2021, in Boyne City, Michigan. Riders of all ages and levels are welcome to enjoy this self-paced bike touring event accessible to all ages and riding abilities.
NEW THIS YEAR - Raven Hill Discovery Center www.miravenhill.org and the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association (TOMMBA) www.tommba.org are collaborating to bring you the opportunity to Choose Your Wheels. Enjoy beautiful miles of wooded mountain bike trails or a scenic paved route around Lake Charlevoix, while supporting two exceptional non-profit organizations striving to enhance outdoor experiences in the area. Stiggs Brewing Company in Boyne City has generously offered to support this event with a Pig Roast, Pint and festive atmosphere for relaxing after the ride.
All riders start at Veterans Memorial Park in Boyne City and finish with a celebratory lunch at Stiggs Brewing Company.
Road cyclists can opt for a scenic, paved trail between Boyne City and Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls, or the 42 mile tour along the north shore of Lake Charlevoix to the Lake Michigan shoreline trail. Then on to the Ironton Ferry and back to Boyne City along the south shore of Lake Charlevoix.
Trail riders can choose from a network of beginner to advanced riding trails at Boyne School Forest Trails or the Avalanche Multi-Use Trails. Advanced mountain bike cyclists might challenge themselves by combining both trails and the distance between them.
“This is the only combined mountain and road bike event in the region,” explained TOMMBA spokesman Mike Labadie. “Whatever your choice of wheels, it will be a beautiful ride, and a great way to explore the area and support two great organizations.” Register online at www.bikereg.com or at Veterans Memorial Park, 319 N. Lake St. in Boyne City, beginning at 7:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Registration includes an event bike shirt, lunch and a pint at Stiggs, a free admission pass to Raven Hill Discovery and acknowledgement for your support of these two amazing non-profit organizations. $50.00 for an individual, $100 for families (up to five related family members), and $25 for a child (under 15) accompanied by an adult, Wristbands will be distributed at registration and are required for Lunch and a pint at Stiggs Brewing Company, 112 S. All proceeds go to maintaining and building top quality trails for riders of all levels. Visit www.tommba.org to learn more about TOMMBA and explore the many TOMMBA built mountain biking trails you might like to explore.
Raven Hill Discovery Center provides hands-on experiences through programs, exhibits, and facilities that connect science, history and the arts for all ages. Located on 175 acres in East Jordan, Raven Hill expands time from prehistory, to modern, to future and from our world to beyond the universe. Raven Hill challenges minds of all ages through experiences that expand the brain and link thoughtful ideas. Raven Hill is looking for your ideas connecting cycling to art, science, and history. If you have a historical fact, story, artistic effort, or scientific facts you would like to share about bicycling, please contact Cheri Leach at Raven Hill to share your idea (231)536-3369, or email info@ravenhill.org. Raven Hill is developing a bicycling display at the museum to align with this year’s Pedal, Pig, & Pint event!

DOUBLE DOG TRAIL OPEN

The next new trail, Double Dog, in the Boyne Forest Trail System on the Boyne City property in Evangeline Township is OPEN!! Easiest access is from the brand new 60-space parking lot on Old Horton Bay Rd here: https://goo.gl/maps/NeixmrwnE7mAcFey8 - From the parking lot, follow the gravel access road in the Northeast corner up to the tree line and the start of the trail.

This trail was built professionally by Flowtrack Mountain Bike Trails and is a Beginner / Intermediate level trail that enters and exits the narrow west corridor of the property, on the North and South side of a two track access road. This trail is designed as an experienced beginner to intermediate trail experience that will provide a constantly reversing grade and moderate sinuosity. The trail tread is well-defined by a narrow finished bench cut on hillsides and narrow corridor on flatter ground. The trail has native or non native rock installed in the trail tread, along with Flowtrack Steeltrack steel frame / wood decking features. Further complementing this trail are soil features including larger rollers, natural jumps, and insloped (berm turns).

Double Dog follows the daily-directional system: M-W-Th-Sat = Clockwise riding; Sun-Tu-F = Counter-clockwise. You can connect to the rest of the Boyne Forest Trails via a new, TOMMBA-built trail called Thing 2 which connects to Hog Wild in 2 places. The southern 1/2 of Thing 2 is still under construction but will be completed in the next few weeks. Please respect any/all "Trail Closed" signs.

Since this a very newly constructed trail, please take it easy on the corners and berms. As the trail matures and compacts, these will definitely firm up.
TOMMBA is fundraising to build more amazing trails on the property. To donate, please visit www.tommba.com/donate

Consumers Energy Celebrates New Solar Power Plant in Cadillac

CADILLAC, Mich., July 19, 2021 – Following the release of the company’s updated Clean Energy Plan, leaders from Consumers Energy, the state of Michigan and the city of Cadillac Monday dedicated the company’s third solar power plant, Cadillac Solar Gardens. The Clean Energy Plan proposes using nearly 8,000 megawatts of solar energy by 2040, ending the use of coal by 2025, achieving net zero carbon emissions and saving customers $650 million through 2040.
Cadillac Solar Gardens will generate nearly half a megawatt of electricity, enough to power as many as 100 homes at a time. The site has 1,752 panels and includes a battery storage system. The solar panels are located on repurposed brownfield land with a manufacturing history that dates to the late 1800s. Before the solar power plant, the site had been vacant for more than 30 years after the closure of an auto manufacturer.
Consumers Energy also operates solar power plants at Grand Valley State University and Western Michigan University.
