August at One.
One. is SO excited for the first SOFO drive-in movie of the season, Pirate Radio, happening TONIGHT. Live music with Michael Kocher starts at 7 pm on the side of the shopping center. We hope to see you there!
As we move into the final month of the summer (I know, we can't believe it either), we are building up your strength as we gear up for moving into cooler weather and the fall season when our bodies and minds spring back into working mode.
One. is here to help you prepare for that. Read on to find out all the ways you can work to build your immunity (something we all need as we are in the midst of yet another surge) and reduce your stress to prevent illness.
We have made some changes around One. over the past month. We've brought on new front desk help on Wednesdays and Fridays, Sandra Sheridan. She has graciously agreed to make life easier for Jennifer and Christina! If you haven't been to the office to meet her yet, join us as we welcome her aboard!
We have new carpet and a slightly different look at the office, we gave it a sprucing up! And some of you may have noticed the new emails that have gone out relating to weekly classes. One. has been busy for you and we can't wait to hear from you about it all!
This month's newsletter is once again packed with tons of the latest health information and local events happening in Annapolis. If you are reading it for the first time, we hope you enjoy it. And if you are a happy return reader, please feel free to share any of the information you read -- it's our biggest compliment!
Let us know what you enjoy and what we can do more of as we love hearing from you!
Yours in Wellness,
Jennifer and Christina

Acupuncture for Rebalancing your Body in preparation for a change of Season
|
|
The first half of August is the ending of summer which involves the heart and small intestine (fire element) and the second half of August is the beginning of late summer which involves the lungs and large intestine (metal element). As the weather starts to cool down and the body is no longer under the stress of excessive heat, it's the perfect time to detox. The time right before harvest is a great time to clear the body of all the excessive heat and dampness from the intensity of summer.
During August, along with all of summer, Chrysanthemum and mint tea are great options to reduce heat out of the body. This is a very important time to build your immune system to prepare for flu season. Schedule an appointment for acupuncture today and/or an herbal consultation to help balance your body.

Check out this cool Local Company
Refill Goodness is founded by Jenn & Jenny, two best friends brought together through their mutual love of live music and Mother Earth. Jenn was born and raised in Cleveland, while Jenny has lived all over the country and currently calls Maryland home. We were raised in the era of recycling and during the single-use plastic boom, which we would later learn it's devastating and permanent damage. Our goal is to try and leave the world better than we found it and we hope Refill Goodness will be the resource that others need to do the same.
Our goal is to make sustainability simple by offering low-waste alternatives for all your household needs. We want to eliminate the dependence on plastic packaging by giving people the choice on how they source everyday essentials. We will provide bulk refills and minimally packaged products with an emphasis on reduced touch, thoughtful sourcing, and consumer education. We strive to offer products that showcase local and regional companies whose missions are aligned with ours. We are passionate about living consciously and sharing our knowledge with the community. We hope to be a resource for all along their sustainability journey.
These guys literally have an answer for EVERYTHING disposable.

It’s No Joke: Humor Boosts Your Health
Ever wonder why comedians always seem to live forever? Read on to Find out how laughter really can improve your immune system...
What is it about laughter that’s so good for you? It might have to do with the way laughter works your diaphragm. When you laugh, you tend to breathe much more deeply. Your lungs have a chance to send more oxygen all over your body, which is especially good for improving brain activity. While this is happening, your heart pumps a little bit faster, your blood pressure decreases, and your circulation improves. Your muscles will also relax, letting go of any stress or tension you might be carrying around.
There are even chemical effects within your body following a good joke. Laughter stimulates your reward center in the brain. It also prompts your brain to produce and release endorphins, which naturally lift your mood.
Plus, here’s a really small bonus: Laughing burns calories. Maybe not as many as a workout, but if you laugh for 10 minutes throughout the course of the day, you could be burning as many as 40 calories.
In fact, some scientific studies out of Europe see humor as contributing to your longevity—yes, those who laugh more often tend to outlive those who don’t.
SO laugh often, watch those funny movies, and surround yourself with those that know how to tickle your funny bone ;)

The Tenacity of Gabby Giffords
In 'Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down,' filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen reveal the grit and commitment of the former U. S. Representative
|
July 20, 2022
This is a gift of a story, Gabby's husband actually video recorded her rehabilitation process from the beginning of her trauma and the footage was used to make this documentary for her fight to regain her ability to walk, talk and write. This woman is the most amazing fighter I have ever seen and a testament to what your body can recover from with the right frame of mind.

Want to go on an adventure in eating?
This is one of the best taco places in DC
(and you can eat Grasshoppers-literally one of THE best sources of protein available!!)
As hard as it is to imagine for many Americans, whose protein choices lean toward livestock animals and not insects, the grasshopper is a delicacy in Oaxaca, and the producers who specialize in chapulines have their own methods for curing and seasoning them. “You know how every grandmother has her own recipe for apple pie? Every family down there has their recipe for seasoning the grasshoppers,” says executive chef Christian Irabién.
The chef imports chapulines from a small handful of Oaxacan producers, then flambés the insects in a pan with mezcal before tucking them into a house-pressed tortilla with avocado, sauteed onions, garlic and whatever seasonal vegetables he may have on hand. The dehydrated chapulines add both texture and spice to the taco. They’re also superb with birria, Irabién tells me. “It’s mind-blowing,” he says. “People come in and ask for the quesabirria, and they just ask us to drop some grasshoppers in there.”

ROTARY CLUB of ANNAPOLIS
The 77th annual Rotary Club of Annapolis Crab Feast will be held on FRIDAY, August 5th, 2022, 5pm-8pm, at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
This special event is not only the world’s largest crab feast but also a major fund-raiser that benefits local community and cultural organizations.
The feast is all-you-can eat and drink, including large male crabs plus sweet Maryland corn on the cob, BBQ, draft beer, and assorted sodas and water. A bake sale and cake raffle can finish your feast with sweetness. Also for sale will be Crab Feast T-shirts and other memorabilia.
For the eighth consecutive year, Annapolis Rotary is working with the non-profit Annapolis Green to make the Crab Feast a ZERO-Waste event. More than 7 TONS of waste per year has been composted. That means NOTHING will go to the landfill. EVERYTHING will be recycled or composted. In just two months the Crab trays, crab shells & all other food waste, all paper products, spoons, knives, and even wooden mallets go in compost. Yes, that includes spoons, knives, and the clear beer cups too. They look like plastic, but are made from plants and therefore, are compostable! Please help us make this Zero-Waste by putting your trash in the appropriately labeled bin.
An excellent way to entertain special clients and guests or to recognize the hard work of loyal employees is in Preferred Dining. Participants can use a private entrance, enjoy guaranteed seating in one of the preferred Dining tents and a wait staff that will bring the crabs to their table. Tables of 10 or 12 are available, as well as individual seating. Contact Lisa Ausherman at 301-676-5566 (lisa@amazingspacedesign.net), or contact Pam Urnowey at 850-619-1645 (pamela.urnowey@homeinstead.com) for information about Preferred Dining.

EAT OYSTERS AND LOCAL SEAFOOD DURING NATIONAL OYSTER WEEKEND, AUG. 5-7!
Visit Shell Recycling Alliance restaurants and slurp to your seafood loving heart’s content!
Oysters clean Chesapeake Bay waters and provide habitat for other (delicious!) species like blue crabs, rockfish, and white perch. Did you know that eating oysters and recycling their shells leads to more oysters returned to the Bay? One reclaimed shell becomes a home for 10X as many babies! ORP, the nonprofit expert in Chesapeake Bay oyster restoration, relies on Shell Recycling Alliance restaurants to provide shell critical for oyster restoration efforts.
Say thank you to these Bay-friendly businesses by patronizing them this National Oyster Weekend!
