October 2021 Canadian Newsletter
Greetings!
Across most of Canada September brought an extension of warm summer days. Alas, autumn has arrived, when the leaves start turning red, orange and yellow, just like the description Ukrainian word for October, zhovten’ (yellow).

This fall our community lost a legendary leader, Dr. Serge Radchuk. His was a life lived in service of our community, across numerous organizations and decades. His biography reads as a lifetime of someone with inspired motivation to make our community strong and united.

Thankfully the legacy of dedicated leadership continues. Congratulations to Ann Szyptur and Cassian Soltykevych, who have taken on the roles of First Vice President and National Secretary of the UCC respectively. Both Ann and Cassian have played key leadership roles in the community and with the UCC, and I have no doubt that they will continue to make great contributions.

With the federal election completed, Members of Parliament to be back at work this fall. The UCC will be reaching out to all MPs, especially those newly elected, to ensure that they’re aware of our community Policy Priorities. I’m also pleased to report that Elizabeth Franceschini has started her placement as our next Parliamentary Intern. We also have a very interesting “exit interview” video project from our summer students below for your viewing.

This fall is turning out to be full of interesting online events, make sure to scroll down to the bottom of our bulletin to see event listings information.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support the work of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress!

As of spring 2021, we have been working with the Ukrainian community in Prince Edward Island to understand their needs, advocate for the Holodomor recognition by the province, and connect them to the wider Ukrainian community in Atlantic Canada.

On August 24, 2021, for the first time in history, Ukrainians in PEI gathered to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day by raising the national flag at the Charlottetown City Hall and singing of the national anthem. Following this successful event, UCC held a virtual meeting with the local community leaders to advise them on establishing a community organization and to discuss local priorities for the future.
