Join Our Watch Party on May 20

It’s our biggest party ever, and you are invited! One of the silver linings of a virtual event is that everyone can come. Please join us on May 20 at 5 pm, when we broadcast Celebrating Science, a Launch the Future Watch Party. It will be a fantastic celebration of science and the importance of STEM learning, and we have an exciting reveal of the new name, branding, and architectural design of the future science center. The event will feature children, youth, community and business leaders, and local STEM celebrities, all sharing why they love science and especially science centers. We are eager to share all the progress made this past year during detailed design thanks to an amazing team of architects, engineers, exhibit, and graphic designers from across the region, state, and country.

Thank you to all of our e-news readers who have been following us, sharing our news, and cheering us on over the years - we can’t wait to share the future with you on May 20! While there is no cost to attend, you do need to RSVP. To learn more and RSVP, visit launchthefuture.org.

Sincerely,

Youth Advisory Board Hosts Virtual Earth Day Extravaganza
Inspiring Youth Towards a Green Future
The Children’s Science Center’s second Virtual Earth Day Extravaganza hosted by the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) was a huge success! After having to quickly adapt to a virtual setting last year due to the pandemic, the YAB members were ready and excited for this year’s Zoom celebration.
During the Earth Day event on April 18th, budding scientists from 4 to 12 years old learned about the environment from guest speaker Dr. Lida Anestidou, Senior Program Officer and Director of The National Academies, participated in hands-on activities, and played an engaging Kahoot game. The program was designed to teach children about the Earth’s environment, furthering their knowledge, and exploring new STEM topics. Over 50 young STEM enthusiasts registered for the two-hour free event.

Dr. Lida Anestidou discussed how climate change affects organisms such as polar bears and the Great Barrier Reef. Additionally, in a breakout room involving an exciting cocoa powder and water experiment, the children saw firsthand how hydrophobic substances, such as oil in the real world can hurt the environment. Learning about oil spills through a hands-on activity opened the children’s eyes to ways we can help prevent ocean pollution. Participants also enjoyed making their very own sundials from recycled materials. Through building these creative tools, participants were able to discuss the importance of the Sun to life on Earth.

Earth Day is celebrated nationally on April 22 every year. The day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement that began back in 1970 and still inspires us to act towards the protection of the environment and focus on the need for conservation.

The Youth Advisory Board is made up of high school students who share a love of STEM and help support the mission of the Children's Science Center. We are so grateful to them for their love of STEM and our Earth!

Citizen Science Summer
Join the Children's Science Center for a summer filled with citizen science! Each month you can engage in different Citizen Science projects with games, activities, and more! Follow us on social media for weekly posts. When you come into the Lab, you can participate in some hands-on experiments related to each topic!
Water Walking Experiment
Investigate Capillary Action
Learn what capillary action is and how this relates to plants and rainbows. Grab some common household items and get the kids involved! They will soon begin to understand how the movement of water within the spaces of a porous material is helpful to plant life. Observe both capillary action and color-mixing with this experiment.
The Children's Science Center is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
We could not continue to share our mission virtually without our community of supporters. Your gifts directly support our mission and programs. THANK YOU!
