We Have So Much To Be Thankful For!

ERICA HEAD SHOT FALL 2021.jpeg

On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, I want to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving! We are so thankful at Theatre Collingwood for the support we have received this year from everyone. Ticket sales, donations, sponsorships and grants have helped in keeping this ship afloat. I’m so thankful for everyone who attended the Porchside Festival and for the wonderful feedback on that festival. And I want to thank all who came to our Sunday In The Vineyard event. I have to also say how very thankful I am to our staff who have worked so hard during a difficult year.

I’d like to recognize our first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation which was held on September 30th, and make a pledge to work hard as a theatre company to educate ourselves on the history of our country and of the First Nations peoples, who have cared for this land for thousands of years. They were the first story-tellers and we must continue to learn from them and share the stories.

Theatres Are Opening Again

I am very happy to see that many theatre companies are beginning to present shows again. Broadway has opened (a truly good sign). I was recently up to the Orillia Opera House to see Theatre by the Bay’s play Mno Bimaadiziwin, which was a wonderful experience. Out friends at Theatre Orangeville will be presenting 'Same Time Next Year' from October 13th. to 31st. For more information visit: Click HERE.

I have the privilege once again this year of directing one of the Gaslight Tour scenes, and look forward to seeing those lucky people who actually were able to buy tickets to this SOLD OUT event, at Cemetery Stories October 23rd and 24th!

If We Only Had a Home

As I work to program our 2022 season I am reminded of how difficult it is to be a professional theatre company without a theatre to perform in. Sadly I had to postpone our show A Night In Vegas again because of no available venue. It has been a long journey for Theatre Collingwood to find a home of our own in our town, and at times very disheartening. It’s actually been almost 40 years of searching! There is so much we could do if we had a suitable theatre. This is why I was thrilled to hear the presentation of the “Feasibility Study for an Arts and Culture Centre in the Town of Collingwood” at this week’s Town of Collingwood Strategic Initiatives Committee meeting. The purpose of the feasibility study was to 1) evaluate the needs of the arts and cultural community in Collingwood, 2) determine if, and to what degree, there is demand for an arts and culture centre, and 3) to assess the feasibility of a new arts and culture centre in Collingwood. Nordicity Group and Giaimo Architects were contracted to undertake the arts centre feasibility study in January 2021. The Arts and Culture Centre will not just be a home for us but for the greater arts community and public. We are impressed with the conservative approach taken by the consultants. This report clearly shows sufficient demand and that the development would be feasible.

If you have looked at the study you will see some suggestions for number of seats and cost of the build. Please don’t let this scare you off. Much research is still to be done. My associates at the CACE Group have been working hard to look at funding opportunities and a plan for this incredible project that will not only enrich our community socially but also economically. It is our hope that council will encourage staff to move quickly on the recommendations, and we look forward to helping with the process. We encourage all to attend on Zoom the next council meeting on October 18th.

Some Entertainment Fun

Two incredible Toronto female talents that are favourites of mine!

Gabi Epstein sings an amazing version of Herod’s Song from Jesus Christ Superstar, cabaret style, and accompanied by our favourite Chris Tsujiuchi.

Kelly Holiff sings Beautiful for PRIDE 2021

UNCOVERED: THE MUSIC OF DOLLY PARTON

The Musical Stage Company is becoming known for its UNCOVERED tributes to classic artists, re-imagined by music director Reza Jacobs and award-winning Canadian artists. UnCovered is a one-of-a-kind ‘unmissable’ event. Their latest show featured wildly inventive arrangements of Dolly Parton classics, and now you can watch it from the safety of your own home between November 24 -December 11. An evening of world-class talent, masterfully filmed in one of Toronto’s most breathtaking venues - Koerner Hall, offering you an up-close and personal view that is unlike anything else. With Thanksgiving weekend here, many of us in Ontario will be gathering in our friends & family bubbles, and fondly reminiscing about the fun we had this summer while the colours of fall signal a change to the final scene of 2021.

And, what a year it has been!

After many months of carefully navigating pandemic restrictions, reaching out to patrons as often as we could with online shows, virtual performances and staying in touch with you by emails and phone calls, it was exhilarating to finally present our PORCHSIDE Festival this summer that brought artists and audiences together again in person for 24 shows over 5 weeks. We cannot thank you enough for supporting this brand new series of outdoor performances!

In August, we held our 2nd Annual Sunday in the Vineyard fun-raiser at Georgian Hills in Clarksburg. This unique event was another highlight of 2021 in which theatre lovers came together for a wonderful afternoon among the vines, tasting local food and wine, and listening to the magnificent music created by violinist, Victoria Yeh. It was a spectacular Sunday!

We also launched our REIGNITE Membership Campaign at Sunday in the Vineyard with a new brochure to explain the importance of Membership and the benefits you get with your tax-deductible donation. If you have not seen the brochure, you can view it on our website: https://theatrecollingwood.ca/support-us/membership/ or call the Box Office and we will be happy to mail you a copy!

Later this year, we hope you’ll join us for our annual Christmas production. Details are coming soon! Erica is also planning for an exciting year ahead when we will expand the PORCHSIDE Festival and bring back indoor productions in safe and accessible venues. You can also expect some intriguing events to warm up the winter months!

All of the shows and events that Theatre Collingwood presents are not possible without the support of our Members who help bridge the gap between ticket sales, fundraising and our operating expenses. During these challenging times, we need your support now more than ever and we appreciate everyone who has already made a membership donation!

As a special ‘Thank You’ to our FRIENDS OF THEATRE COLLINGWOOD Members, you will be entered into a draw to WIN One of FIVE $100 Gift Certificates from our Dine & PLAY partners! By the end of October, simply donate a minimum of $50 to become a Member and stay tuned to see if you are a lucky Winner! The draw will take place on Monday, November 1st, 2021. THANK YOU & GOOD LUCK!
