Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow...

Tax reform. Tax "Super Bowl." Taxmageddon?

The expiring tax cuts of 2025 are getting people anxious. What's to happen? Deficits and debt are on legislators’ minds, and that means things may look a little different from the 2017 “pro-growth” mindset of legislators seven years ago. There is a lack of education and understanding that members of Congress and their staff have about what the philanthropic sector really does. Worse, threats to the sector are NUMEROUS and a bit unknown until Election Day on November 5, 2024. U.S. legislators may be looking to nonprofits as a source of revenue! Yikes! What can we do about that?

Meet Sara Barba, an expert federal policy consultant and lobbyist for charities, foundations, donor-advised fund providers, and associations. She is in strong demand right now across the country offering a high-level overview of the expiring tax cuts at the end of 2025 and what tax reform may look like. She talks about how things will look different in 2025---a different governmental mood and perspective---than they did in 2017. But, she also gives us hope regarding how she and others can educate members of Congress so they are making the most sound decisions and not going after nonprofits---when that is the LAST thing the charitable sector needs!

A Tip for Nonprofits: The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is a tremendous resource for nonprofits trying to get the fundamentals on fundraising. Read more here about how to find a supportive chapter near you: Find a Chapter | Association of Fundraising Professionals (afpglobal.org)

A Tip for Donors: GuideStar by Candid gives a pretty good snapshot of the nonprofits you are interested in. Just type in the name of the nonprofit and read everything from mission to program, board to financials, and much more. There are 1.8 million nonprofits out there, so you better get started now. You have a lot of reading to do! Click here: Nonprofit data for donors, grantmakers, and businesses | GuideStar | Candid

A Tip for Professional Advisors: The article "Positioning Yourself for Growth and Philanthropic Success with Families" can be found on page 66 of Wealthmanagement.com's Mid-Year Outlook. The article calls for wealth advisors to have philanthropic conversations with their clients and leverage philanthropic specialists to provide full and expandable services and impact. We all hope these efforts will create visibility and demand for philanthropic advising!
