How Wi-Fi Progress Helps 8K Distribution



Wi-Fi matters for consumers and pros alike; with OFDMA, Wi-Fi 6 has already improved efficiency enabling more 8K transmissions within the home and for professional workflows. NHK Highlight VVC Advances for 8K


At IBC this year, NHK demoed 8K video encoding using one of the latest features in the VVC codec (H.266), Multi-Layer Coding. One broadcast stream acts as a 'base layer' while additional layers add the information needed for 4K, and a further layer boosts that up to 8K. All three layers are required to show 8K. EU Denies Review Process on Energy Requirements - What Will Set Makers Do?


According to the Italian trade magazine Digital Day, the European Commission says it had no intention of revising a planned change to EU regulations on TV power consumption. The change will eliminate exemptions to power consumption regulations previously applied to 8K and microLED-based sets. On the face of it, that might cause 8K sets to disappear from the market, but the Commission said that it believed that the change in the regulations would not cause sets to be banned as TV makers would take action to meet the new rules. Live 8K Still Needs More Development


While some parts of the live 8K ecosystem are well developed, like 8K cameras, what is still missing is “the glue and infrastructure to create a proper multi-8K-camera live production,” notes James Poole, Chief Operating Officer at Televideo. Read Chris Chinnock's article here.

Predictions from Synamedia for 2023


According to this recent article, streaming technology provider Synamedia sees fan zones driving 8K adoption. "Whether you are watching a live event on a big screen outside the stadium or in a bar with others, you expect a premium experience and pin sharp quality. Fan zones are not just limited to popular sports – think Eurovision Song Contest and Last Night at the Proms with all those sequins and pomp in glorious detail. We first demonstrated live sports streaming in 8K with BT in early 2022 and, through our discussions with operators, we all have high expectations for the next 12-24 months." 8K AIN'T GOING AWAY


AVPro Edge sells to the ProAV and Custom Install markets and has been a leader in developing 8K products like their 8K HDMI matrix switcher, 8K HDMI distribution amplifier, 8K downscaler, and upcoming 8K HDMI fiber optic extension kit. While uptake remains a bit slow, they see the adoption of 8K as inevitable. Read their arguments on their website here.

Next-gen QD-OLED TVs could go 8K sooner than you think


QD-OLED TVs are only offered in 4K resolution at this time, but rumors have been circulating that Samsung Display is considering developing 8K versions. Bob Raikes plans to dig into this to provide insight into the challenges of offering 8K panels. Look for more coverage soon.
