St. Brendan Weekly Bulletin
February 16, 2022
The mission of St. Brendan Catholic School, in partnership with parents, is to empower our students to act as leaders and Disciples of Christ, use their God-given gifts in service to the Church and community, and achieve academic excellence.
We had so much fun celebrating Valentine's Day and our 100th Day of this week!
From the Principal
Dear St. Brendan families,

This week has been full of learning and fun! On Monday we celebrated Valentine's Day and then on Tuesday many classes celebrated the 100th day of school.

As a reminder on Friday there is no school due to a staff in-service and the following Monday and Tuesday will be our mid-winter break. School will resume on Wednesday, February 23rd.

Archbishop Etienne has granted Friday, March 11th as an Archdiocese-wide Mental Health Day for school staff. He recognizes the many challenges educators have been faced with these past few years and is asking our staff to take a day for self-care and prayer. You are welcome to reference his letter to staff. Originally, we had this day off to ensure that our staff have the opportunity to complete the necessary documents for our accreditation process. We will be rescheduling the accreditation workday to Friday, April 1st. Please be sure to mark April 1st as a no school day on your calendars.

Lent is quickly approaching. Our parents and families are invited to join us at our 9 AM school Ash Wednesday Mass on March 2nd. 2nd-8th grade will attend Mass and Preschool-1st grade will have ashes distributed to their classrooms. Our teachers will be discussing the season of Lent with students in the coming weeks. Students will be learning ways in which they can pray, fast, and give alms during this season of Lent.

Blessings,
Catherine Shumate

"I ask that from now on, you never let your past sins be an obstacle between you and Jesus. It's a ruse of the devil to keep putting our sins before our eyes in order to make them like a screen between
the Savior and us." This quote from St. Therese of Lisieux is a great reminder to us, especially as we approach the season of Lent, to not fall into despair. Often we can get overwhelmed by what we have done wrong and feel that we are not worthy of forgiveness, or that God would be so disappointed in us, or even; why bother going to Church because we are so far from God that he wouldn’t want us there. However, these thoughts are not from God, but from the Devil. She continues: "I'm not saying that you believe too much in your own wretchedness. I'm telling you that you don't believe enough in merciful love." In other words, God’s mercy is greater than anything we could possibly do. All a parent has to do is recall how much they love their children, and how much they still love their children and would give their life for them, even when they mess up. That same love is the love that God has for all of us. "Not a single soul falls into Hell that has not torn itself out of my arms." In other words, you really have to fight hard to break your relationship with God! His arms are always open to you. Lent and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which our 2nd graders celebrate today, are fantastic ways to remember God’s merciful love and renew our relationship with Him who gave all for us.

St. Patrick’s Day Snake Hunt

Legend says that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, and that is why there are no snakes in Ireland to this day!

In honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, on Thursday, March 17, we will re-enact St. Patrick’s work by driving the snakes out of St. Brendan School!
Please encourage your child to join us on the playground during recess. Hundreds of snakes (all fake!) will be hidden all over the playground (big toy/swings area).

If you would like to earn some easy volunteer hours, please join us on Thursday, March 17th, at 11:00 AM to help hide the snakes; then stay through recesses to help monitor, count, and re-hide the snakes. This fun and student favorite day can only happen with several volunteers! If you are able to volunteer, please contact Eileen Warner at eileenw@school.saintbrendan.org.
Covid-19 Vaccination Status
In order to speed up our Test-to-Stay Program, we ask if you haven’t done so, please email a picture of your student’s COVID-19 vaccination card – once they have completed the vaccination series – to Mrs. Murnane. In the subject line, please enter, “Student Last Name, Student First Name-Vax Card.” Covid vaccinations are not required for schools, however, if your student is vaccinated, having the card on file helps expedite implementing the Test-to-Stay program.
Now Accepting Applications for New Students
Thank you to our St. Brendan families for re-enrolling. Our priority enrollment for returning families is now over and we have opened up applications to new transfer families. If you know any families interested in joining our school community, please encourage them to tour and apply.

You're Invited - Middle School Invention Convention, March 3rd
Come One, Come All, to the Greatest Convention of Them All!

The Middle School Team and Students are excited to announce the first official St. Brendan Invention Convention! Students have been working on this cross-curricular project since December, and they have completed some absolutely amazing work. The guidelines for each student were to design and build an invention that a) solves a problem and b) serves a purpose. You will be truly amazed at some of the inventions our students have come up with, and we hope you are able to drop by to show your support to our middle schoolers.

Parents of all grade levels are invited to visit student projects from 1:10-2:55 on March 3rd in the gym. Please remember to check in with the office when you arrive and to follow all social-distancing guidelines to help keep our school community safe.

Please email Mr. Langston (timl@school.saintbrendan.org) with any questions. We hope to see you soon!

Thank you,
The MS Team and Students

Student-Led Mass
Our students lead Mass during the school week on Fridays, and now we have extended our student-led Masses to one Sunday a month for the whole parish and school community. This is one of the ways we are working towards community building and engagement, and growing as a faith community. One class each month will do the readings and will also sing at Mass with a student-only choir. Here is the schedule for the rest of the school year. This will be for the 10 AM Mass.

February 27 – 4th Grade
March 27 – 5th Grade
April 10 – 6th Grade (note: this is also Palm Sunday)
May 22 – 7th Grade (note: this is also First Holy Communions)

Ms. Sims will prepare each grade to sing and the teachers will prepare the students to do the readings.
