Dear Assumption Community,
Late last spring, Patrick Sedgwick, a rising senior and the Senate Speaker for the Student Government Association, let me know that he was leading a group of students who had drafted a business plan to bring a pub back to campus. Patrick said he planned to give it to me this fall. I asked him to send it to me right away instead. Today, I’m excited to announce that the Board of Trustees has voted to proceed with seeking a license to operate a pub on campus in the current Hagan Campus Center Hall.
This isn’t a done deal yet. We need to raise funds for construction and proceed through the licensure process. But I am both hopeful and confident that, if all goes well, construction will begin this fall.
The pub would be open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni, among others—creating a space in the center of campus for conversation, community, and fun. By including both a recreational area and a bar area, we can open the pub to students of all ages (enforcing drinking-age laws, of course) and model safe and responsible drinking.
Stay tuned for the Assumption Pub naming contest on the official Instagram page of Assumption University: @AssumptionUMA.
I’m grateful to Patrick and the student group he led for their thoughtful and detailed proposal—one that will enhance the sense of community that makes Assumption so special.
Sincerely,
Greg Weiner, Ph.D.
Interim President
