Reopening for the Celebration of Public Mass & Schedule
The Church of St. Mary :: 201 E. Illinois Lake Forest, IL 60045

From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
|
|
Allow me to share a public service announcement, a prayer and a litany of trust with you this August day.
It has been shared with me that there is an increase in the number of Stolen Cars and Burglaries to Parked Cars in Lake Forest. There are two trends that are driving this phenomenon. First, security videos collected show thieves or would be thieves entering unlocked cars and trying to start them while taking anything of value. Another troubling development is many of our residents leave expensive items in their cars, contributing to a high “success rate” for our thieves.
The second trend is the widespread tendency of many residents to leave their cars unlocked at night. Quite a few leave the key fobs inside as well. The convenience may be understandable, but this habit is making our neighborhoods easy pickings and encourages these groups to make the long drive from Chicago out to Lake Forest to go stealing. Please lock your cars, remove valuables and not put yourself or your valuables at risk to thieves.
The following "Prayer for the Pandemic” was recently shared with me by a parishioner, with words we might want to ponder:
May we who are merely inconvenienced, remember those whose lives are at stake.
May we who have no risk factors, remember those most vulnerable.
May we who have the luxury of working from home, remember those who must choose between preserving their health and making their rent.
May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close, remember those who have no options.
May we who have to cancel our trips, remember those that have no safe place to go.
May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market, remember those who have no margin at all.
May we who settle in for a quarantine at home, remember those who have no home.
As fear grips our country, let us choose love.
During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen.
The Parish Staff met earlier this week. We gathered and spent time praying for the success of our ministry. I shared the following Litany of Trust, by Sr. Faustina Maria Pia, SV as part of the staff prayer. Perhaps it is a regular part of your daily prayer.
From the belief that I have to earn Your love – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear that I am unlovable – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear that trusting You will leave me more destitute – Deliver me, Jesus.
From all suspicion of Your words and promises -- – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the rebellion against childlike dependency on You – Deliver me, Jesus.
From refusals and reluctances in accepting Your will – Deliver me, Jesus.
From anxiety about the future – Deliver me, Jesus.
From resentment or excessive preoccupation with the past – Deliver me, Jesus.
From restless self-seeking in the present moment – Deliver me, Jesus.
From disbelief in Your love and presence – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being asked to give more than I have – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the belief that my life has no meaning or worth – Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of what love demands – Deliver me, Jesus.
From discouragement – Deliver me, Jesus.
That You are continually holding me, sustaining me, loving me – Jesus, I trust in you.
That Your love goes deeper than my sins and failings, and transforms me – Jesus, I trust in you.
That not knowing what tomorrow brings is an invitation to lean on You – Jesus, I trust in you.
That You will not leave me orphan, that You are present in Your Church – Jesus, I trust in you.
That Your plan is better than anything else – Jesus, I trust in you.
That You always hear me and in Your goodness always respond to me – Jesus, I trust in you.
That You give me the grace to accept forgiveness and to forgive others – Jesus, I trust in you.
That You give me all the strength I need for what is asked – Jesus, I trust in you.
That my life is a gift – Jesus, I trust in you.
That You will teach me to trust You – Jesus, I trust in you.
That You are my Lord and my God – Jesus, I trust in you.
That I am Your beloved one – Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
May God bless us with prayerful and trusting hearts this day!

Adjustment to the Time for Daily Mass at Our Church of St. Mary
|
|
During these COVID days we have adjusted to the church building being closed. We have adjusted to Mass being streamed at 12:00 Noon. We have adjusted to Mass resuming with a limited number of people in attendance. We have adjusted to changing our routine, registering for Mass, arriving on time, entering the south doors of the Church, being nourished in Word and Sacrament. We give thanks to God for the nourishment, sustenance and strength received from the Eucharist; spiritual communion as well as receiving the Holy Eucharist, Jesus present under the appearance of bread and wine.
After consultation with the Parish Council and the Parish Staff, beginning Monday, August 17th, there will be another adjustment in the daily Mass schedule at St. Mary’s. Daily Mass will be offered at 7:30 AM Monday through Friday. All are welcome to join us to be nourished in Word and Sacrament around the table of the Lord.
Why this latest change in routine and adjustment to what is familiar at the Church of St. Mary?
The answer is safety. Safety for our school children. Safety for our parishioners. Safety for those who come to the Church of St. Mary for Mass. The new school year is presenting unprecedented challenges and opportunities for our parish community. Instead of having two entry points for the school children, there will now be five. Students will arrive at St. Mary’s at 8:30 AM to begin school at 8:45 AM. Cohorts of our school students will enter daily through the Green Bay road parking lot entrances. If our parishioners, if our guests, if our worshippers at Mass and Rosary Prayer Group are able to attend Mass and pray together, prior to the beginning of each school day, the chance for accidents or worse happening with people driving in the parking lot as students are trying to get to school on time this upcoming school year.
Change to routine is challenging and difficult. We like our familiar routines. I pray that many parishioners of St. Mary will be able to regularly attend daily Mass, Monday – Friday at 7:30 AM beginning on Monday, August 17th. As with the adjustments in our routines that have taken place since March 2020, we will monitor this decision and update the community on its duration. Please pray for our school, administration, faculty, students and families. Know that they will be praying for our parishioners and all benefactors of the School of St. Mary!

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.
-
Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
-
Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
-
Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
-
Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
-
Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
-
Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
-
Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
-
100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
-
Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
-
Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
-
Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
-
Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
-
Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
-
SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.

August 16, 2020: Gospel Reflection for the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
|
|
All three readings for this Sunday tell how God’s love and salvation is for everyone, not just the Jews. In our first reading we hear from Third Isaiah. God proclaims through Isaiah that all who live by the covenant and keep the Sabbath are welcomed in God’s house of prayer. Indeed God’s house of prayer is for all peoples! This would have been shocking to the people in Isaiah’s time. They felt very strongly that they were the chosen people and therefore were held above others in God’s eyes. Yet God here is saying that it has to do more with the intentionality of our actions than our ethnic background.
An example I would often tell my students in youth ministry is to think of your favorite class. You are more willing to put in the extra work because you have passion for it. Then I would have them think of a class they really don’t care for but need to get a good grade it. They may be doing all the work it takes to get the grade they want/need but odds are they aren’t happy about it. Those are two very different intentionalities even if they have the same end result. Likewise, we are to live out being the beloved of God with true passion for God for humanity and all of creation.
In the second reading Paul takes a rather different approach in his rationale. In Paul’s letter to the Roman community he says that he is an apostle to the Gentiles, even though he himself is not only a Jew but a Pharisee at that. Paul is widening his world view to include the Gentiles his preaching and creating communities who follow the teachings of Jesus. Paul goes on to say that by doing so he hopes to make his fellow Jews jealous enough to become follows of Christ. In that way he not only gains followers of the Gentiles but also from the Jews, who largely rejected Jesus.
In our gospel for Sunday Jesus goes to two regions that are Gentile, Tyre and Sidon. So it’s little wonder that he would be approached by a Canaanite woman. As a Canaanite, she is considered outside the Jewish community and therefore unclean. Yet this woman has heard enough about Jesus to approach him, with some vigor it should be noted, and ask that Jesus heal her daughter. Very uncharacteristically Jesus tells his that he only came to save the lost sheep of Israel. It is so unlike Jesus that we have to wonder if he is saying this on purpose to see if his disciples and anyone around them feel this way but would not say anything. When Jesus likens the woman to a dog she quickly turns it around and says that even dogs eat the scraps from the table. Jesus now praises her for her faith, even in what seems to be the midst of her dismissal. This woman truly has faith, faith that will not be shaken. We could all use a little more of her faith!
In all three readings we see that God extended the offer of salvation beyond the boundaries of what those at the time thought was appropriate. It is yet another reminder that God’s ways are not our ways. God is more loving and forgiving than any one of us could possibly imagine, and that is most definitely something to celebrate!

The Soup Kitchen at Most Blessed Trinity is still serving those in need, but on a “take out” basis. As we have for the last several months, we will prepare “brown bag suppers” for our guests again on August 21. We will need between 75 and 90 meals, and would welcome contributions of:
- Loaves of sandwich bread, preferably whole wheat
- Ham or turkey
- Sliced cheddar, American, or Swiss cheese
- Individual bags of chips
- Granola bars
- Oranges, apples, tangerines
- Juice boxes or bottles/cans of water
Any and all contributions are welcome. Since the Parish Center is closed, we would ask that you deliver them to Ellen Tierney. Please contact Ellen if you need any additional information: at ellenkelly@comcast.net or (847.295.4649)

“For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.”
ROMANS 11:29
God has a special mission in mind for each of us. He has given us the gifts we need to accomplish that mission. We are called to be good stewards by using those gifts to do the work that He has planned for each of us. If we deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then some part of His work will be left undone.
