Environmental, Health, and Safety Auditing

An EHS audit is a key piece of your EHS management system, assessing your compliance with applicable Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards to ensure that your EHS management system performs as intended.

The appropriate frequency and scheduling of EHS audits can be challenging. If you perform audits too infrequently, your workers, supervisors, and managers may become complacent between audits, only ramping up their compliance efforts as the audit dates approach. On the other hand, auditing EHS compliance too frequently can leave your personnel feeling overwhelmed, unable to correct deficiencies turned up in the last audit before the next one starts.

You may want to balance periodic, formal audits with routine checks of compliance in specific areas, departments, or workflows. Some companies use both routine audits performed by internal EHS staff combined with periodic comprehensive audits performed by third-party auditors.

Performing EHS audits provides a measure of the effectiveness of the overall EHS Management System to local, corporate leadership, and other stakeholders and assists in identifying priorities for risk reduction and resource planning, process improvement, business continuity planning, and advancing the sustainability of the EHS function.

Ensure your audit team's final deliverable includes a comprehensive audit report that provides a detailed description of all audit findings and recommendations.

Project Spotlight

Spill Prevention, Control, & Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans

Hygieneering, Inc. was recently engaged by a client to perform an environmental, health and safety gap assessment in Northwest Wisconsin at a cheese processing facility. During our gap assessment, we observed three (3) 1,000-gallon above-ground diesel fueling tanks and one (1) 1000-gallon sub-base diesel tank for a backup generator. Our gap assessment identified the facility is covered by the SPCC rule as it has an aggregate aboveground oil storage capacity greater than 1,320 U.S. gallons in containers greater than 55 gallons each. The facility is also relatively close to a river and lakes.

Hygieneering’s environmental professionals can evaluate/update your current SPCC plan or develop/establish a new compliant program to support your operation. Please refer to our EPA Compliance Services page on our website for more information about our SPCC services and other specific environmental, health, and safety services.
