A PERSONAL WELCOME FROM KEVIN & SUE
A figgy welcome to all our new members.

We love running this little club and are here to help in any way we can. Although I personally don't claim to know everything about the car, as a club we are truly blessed to be surrounded by such helpful and friendly members whom we can turn to, so ask away.

We wanted to remind everyone that we are always on the lookout for great stories and helpful and interesting content.

BANKSY MEETS POPPY
The image that makes us smile :)
A few weeks ago there was speculation, the UK street artist Banksy had finally claimed responsibility for pieces of street art that had appeared on the east coast of England. It was too much of a temptation for member Francine Hendrie and 'Poppy' to go find some! The main picture is of three people on top of a bus shelter: two dancing and another playing the accordion. The location is Admiralty Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. And the insert is of a vast seagull, painted on a gable wall in a more elaborate manner than one often sees in his work, hovers over a skip filled with huge carved chips (Poppy is in front of the skip). The location is Katwijk Way, Lowestoft, Suffolk, on the side of a house in Denmark Road. Go see if you can check them out...
Bradford on Avon to Avebury Manor Drive Day 2021
Seven members enjoyed some awesome convoy driving
Words Kevin Fagan & Pitcures Facebook - Sunday 22nd August.

Thanks to South West Chapter Coordinators Lynette & Rob Parsons who organised a nice drive out last Sunday. 7 cars turned up and enjoyed the meeting in Bradford on Avon. The drive route ending at Avebury Manor.
Helmingham Hall Festival 2021
Helmingham Hall is a beautiful moated house with listed gardens and an annual event which came with rave reviews … hundreds of cars, thousands of attendees and all kinds of music.
Words & Pictures by Adam Woods – Sunday 1st August

To understand what the needs of our members are, we decided to survey them on the Facebook Group earlier in the year and 'Car Shows' were the second most popular idea after day trips.

So, while we had never attended a car show with a car before, let alone organise for members to attend with us, when we saw what was planned at Helmingham Hall we really wanted to go!

Helmingham Hall is a beautiful moated house with listed gardens and this annual event came with rave reviews … hundreds of cars, thousands of attendees and all kinds of music, entertainment and stalls. And better still we got a great deal on entry fees! We needed to finalise numbers around a month before the event itself, so with the very welcome assistance of Kevin, we got the plans in motion, promoting out the event. Steadily the numbers grew until we have 12 cars booked. Edward kindly agreed to bring his gazebo, while Mandy brought some very handy stakes which we used to put up our orange bunting to match with the club’s colours!

In the days before we kept an eye on the uncertain weather, but things brightened up as we were advised that we were being upgraded to the Club Stand Arena and that over 7,000 tickets had been sold! The day came with an early start and some of us meeting at a nearby service (where lots of other attendees were gathering too) and so we headed over in convoy to Helmingham. We arrived on-site to our own special area, where we tried to work out how much space we had and whether we could fit everyone in!
We had a great range of Figaros (and members!) on display, and were lucky enough that Colin and Lesley brought their Figaro and Figaro Trailer which certainly attracted a lot of attention!

My three favourite things about the day?

1. As ever members are such a lovely bunch of people – everyone was pretty relaxed and
chatty, just as we like it.

2. It never ceases to amaze me what an eclectic assortment of people come to look at our
Figaros… and the reaction they always get from all ages and genders!

3. The event itself was well run with lots of food, lots to see, and lots to do…
we were there from 8.30 am and it seemed to flash through to 4 pm in no time at all!

And so, like that, the day was coming to an end, we started dismantling our area and members started heading off… the rain had just about held off and we had a chance to reflect on what had been a pretty good day! And one last thing, a Newsletter Exclusive, I was in touch with Helmingham the following week and it turns out that while they announced the winner of the best club stand on the day, they didn’t announce that our stand had come second! So that was the feather in the cap on what had been a lovely day out for members of the Eastern Chapter!

It’s a family affair
Having been through such a tough year of personal and emotional loss, single mum Jennifer Kent decided to sell her wedding dress and engagement ring and treat herself to the best divorce present money can buy!
Words & Pictures by Jennifer Kent

Freya came into our lives after loving the Figaro for over 12 years. After a rather horrific year, going through separation and divorce due to my ex-husband left me for another woman, abandoning all responsibility to me (financially/emotionally/physically) from busy business mum to a single mother when the twins were 8 mths old I deserved to think of myself for once. My sister also passed away in September due to long covid and made me realise life was short and should be filled with things that make you happy.

"I decided to sell my wedding and engagement rings and bought the best divorce present for myself!!! She’s a real pulling machine and a conversation starter so Freyas helped me build my confidence up again after being completely destroyed and when I put the roof down, all my troubles melt away when I feel the sunshine hit my face"
I feel so lucky to have found her. Sadly we were in an accident 12 days after owning Freya but she’s now looking better than ever after the amazing Figgy community came to the rescue, a new door, mirror and chrome sourced – I’ve had a real learning curve rebuilding her with a friend, bolting the window motor into the new door and fitting and cleaning her. Her internal is now shiny and clean after a lot of elbow grease!

My eldest daughter Annabelle (8) wants to start a wedding car and hire company and has even sourced the name… ‘Belles and Beaus Figaros’ and now looking to source another car who will be called Rosie.. to add to her personal fleet. A business entrepreneur at 8 – so I’m going with it and seeing how it could flourish! Not sure she will be able to wait until 17 to drive Rosie though!!!!

Lowri (blonde twin) and Felicity (brunette) are 2 Lissy for short * love Freya and refuse to get in our Seat Alhambra and insist on helping clean her and hug her a lot!!! A total figgy Family convert!
Hope you don’t mind sharing our story with you but a lot has gone on and Freya is so special to all of us, our time to bond, my adult time and family time.
Carfest North 2021
Festivals, concerts, large gatherings etc, etc - Most of us could only have dreamed of getting back to some of these during the last 18 months or so of Covid.
Words & Pictures by Ken Graham – 23rd to 25th July 2021

But, having had the 2020 CarFest North (inevitably) cancelled due to the pandemic there was a genuine sense of hope, but not a little trepidation, about going along to a car focussed music festival in the current climate. This was even more clear when, on the first night from the stage Chris Evans said that Carfest North had been 4 weeks away from going bust, as they had to make a decision 4 weeks from the event date to go ahead and engage all their contractors (at massive expense) with the risk that Covid restrictions might make the festival impossible to run. They took the risk, and boy, are we glad they did!!!

Numbers attending had been reduced to allow a measure of social distancing (although the requirement for this had been lifted in England before the event). This meant it was more comfortable to get around the site and watch the music acts than with the normally much larger, numbers.

We had five Figaros along, myself, Alan and Sheena Harvey; Katherine Clark and Steve Paget; Darren and Lisa Samuels (along with Emily and Alice, CarFest ‘veterans’ having been 14 and 4 months old respectively in 2014 and 2015 at their first CarFests!), and Dominique Pearce and Philip Sparrow. Dominique told me, as we had a pub meal with our fellow participants on the Thursday night, that she had visited the Figaro stand at CarFest North in 2015 at Oulton Park on the Sunday and, by the following Sunday she had her own Figaro!!!

I’ve lost count of the number of people who have said they got their Fig after visiting us at CarFest, but this is the first time one of them has actually ended up joining the club and exhibiting with us!! Setting up on Thursday was slightly different with confirmation of a negative lateral flow test required before access, with this to be repeated during the weekend. However, the organisation was, as ever, impeccable by Brand Events and given the massive uncertainty the staff had about the event going ahead, they deserve a real vote of thanks for their efforts.

"We were, as usual, inundated with visitors to the stand with our usual mix of return visitors who come and see us every year, to those who had either never seen a Figaro or who knew of them and just want to get one!! We love talking about the cars, so it’s a real pleasure when people take the time to come and see us."
Once again, the music offering in the evening covered all tastes, with my personal favourites being The Fratellis; Rag’nBone Man; Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbot and the wonderful CarFest Supergroup - The Feeling supporting Freya Ridings; Beverley Knight and the one and only Roger Daltrey!!!

If you’ve had a look at the 2019 CarFest North photos you will be aware we had just a little rain (biblical downpours, in fact, for 3 days!), but, this year we had NO rain!! The weather was fantastic from start to finish with the only problem keeping hydrated and getting the sunscreen on! All five Figaros have already expressed interest in CarFest North 2022, so, as we might be limited to eight cars for our display please let me know if you fancy it - its usually the 2nd last weekend in July (2022 dates to be confirmed) But, I’m afraid I can’t guarantee the 2021 weather!!!
A short history of the Pike Factory cars
Wonderfully Japanese, supremely odd, and irresistibly appealing, we take a look back at how it all started...
Words By Brendan McAleer

In the 1960s, in San Francisco, a teenaged Japanese designer named Naoki Sakai became obsessed with Japanese tattoo culture during art school. Once he put his designs on mass-printed t-shirts, he started making money hand-over-fist. When interviewed later in life, he claimed to have pulled in up to $300,000 a month—and blown it all. Yet Sakai somehow found himself designing a car for Nissan.

Three concept vehicles were revealed at the 1987 Tokyo Auto Show and based on public reaction, Nissan decided to go ahead with Sakai's design. The car would be built at the Aichi Machine Industry plant, a subcontractor for Nissan that today builds engines for modern-day oddballs like the Juke and the Cube. Nissan dubbed their efforts "Pike Factory."
The designer of the Figaro, Naoki Sakai became obsessed with Japanese tattoo culture during art school.
When the Be-1 was rolled out a production limit of 10,000 in January 1987, more than 10,000 orders were made, and buyers were decided by lottery. Just like the Figaro.
Be-1 (1987 : BK10)
The first car was the humble little Be-1, powered by a 987cc eight-valve engine that made just 52 hp. It was a friendly-faced little thing with round headlights and cutesy interior trim, like an enormous circular speedometer. Weighing under 1500 lbs, the Be-1 had a very tight turning circle, extremely low fuel consumption, and cheap insurance. It was built on the bones of the March (known as the Micra in other markets), with a mostly hand-assembled body.

It was available with either a five-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic, and later cars gained amenities like a large, electrically operated canvas roof.
Nissan PAO (1989 : PK10)
Spurred by the success of the Be-1, Nissan commissioned two more cars from Sakai and had a retro-themed delivery van built, as well. This was the S-Cargo, made from 1989-1990, and they're just now becoming importable into the US. The S-Cargo is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder taken out of the Sunny, and it's only available with a three-speed automatic transmission.

Both the exterior and interior are filled with quirky delights.
The name PAO comes from the Chinese word meaning a Mongolian portable dwelling.
The S-Cargo is the only commercial vehicle in the “Pike Car” series and is still very popular.droppable-1621528949218
S-Cargo (1989 : G20)
On the outside, the S-Cargo resembles an anime Citroen 2CV, or an Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite driven partway through a giant marshmallow. On the inside, there are snail-themed floor mats, a single-spoke steering wheel, and a removable sushi tray. Driving one is like being in a garden shed nailed to the chassis of a Nissan Stanza.

The two Sakai cars that followed the Be-1 were even more interesting: the Pao (pictured up top, in the bizarre Jurassic setting) and the Figaro. Both had the same performance specs as the Be-1, but the Pao brought safari-style sheet metal, and the Figaro promised pint-sized European flair.
The summer is not over yet!
Florida based member Michael Cohen was gutted he could not make our 30th Birthday Party but decided to make up for it by going on a 5-weeks adventure taking in New York, both Manhattan and Long Island, Main and Road Island, passing through Massachusetts and the tip of New Hampshire, and a tad bit of Connecticut for good measure!
Words & Pictures: Micheal Cohen

Greetings to my wonderful family and friends across the big pond. Hope you are doing well, having a wonderful summer and of course remaining healthy.

"Having been "locked out" of potentially the greatest England adventure ever, and still very envious of those of you who did make it to the 30th Figaro Birthday outing super bash, Barbara and are departing tomorrow for a five-week NEW ENGLAND
adventure, a road trip to include: New York, both Manhattan and Long Island, Main and Road Island, passing thru Massachusetts and the tip of New Hampshire, and a tad bit of Connecticut for good measure!"

No! Not doing in it in the "new arrival" which arrived in the Port of Jacksonville and cleared customs late last week so, Barbara and I up Monday and drove her the 365 miles home to Delray Beach.

We've shipped Barbara's car to New York for the"New England" adventure and will then drive it down the east coast to home here in Florida. Anyone wanting to take a drive with us, raise your hand now!

Tewksbury Car Festival 2021
After the disappointment of last years cancellation due to Covid, we were happy to see the event go ahead. Patrick Light rallied the troops in Cornwall and like Sue and I drove up on the day before.
Words and Pictures: Kevin Fagan - Sunday 22nd August.

The weather forecast kept changing throughout the week but we were so pleased that the thunderstorms happened on Saturday the day before and Sunday looked fine and dry.

It was agreed that we would all meet at 9.00 in the morning outside the Travelodge Hotel and convoy to the field. It may go down as the shortest convoy in history as in reality that meant turning left out the car park, right at the end of the road and left after 50 meters. At least we didn’t lose anyone haha. It was a great call to do this however as it meant we could arrange all the figs to be parked in a nice row, unlike most of the other car clubs which had cars scattered around the field.

"It may go down as the shortest convoy in history as in reality that meant
turning left out the car park, right at the end of the road and left after 50 meters. At least we didn’t lose anyone haha"

The sun came out around 10 and the two gazebo’s created perfect shade for us all and the ideal base to explore from. In addition to hooking up with friends, Sue and I enjoyed all the fantastic cars on display. The figs attracted the usual amount of interest and look stunning parked in a perfect line of different colours.

Peter Pattermore with his stunning engine bay. Apparently he removed the engine to thoroughly clean the bay!
Pete Pattermore ‘Sally’ was the stands 'Figaro Magnet' and sucked lots of people in for a closer look, it really did have so much interest throughout the day. I thought the engine bay in Belle was clean until I saw Pete’s. You really could eat your dinner off of it, awesome stuff. We had 15 cars on the day so a huge thanks to Patrick Light and everyone who attended.

How to remove the door card
There are a number of reasons you may need to get into the inner door workings. Typically these can be to lubricate the lock mechanism, replace speakers or find the 4/5 digit lock number.
Words & Pictures: Simon Smith

Here we take you through what's involved in removing and replacing the door card.

REMOVAL
1. Wind down the window as it is easier to remove and reinstall with the window down.
2. Remove 3 cream trim clip screws down inside edge.
3. Remove 4 cream trim clip screws along the bottom.
4. Unscrew the chrome door lock knob.
5. Remove the screw holding the chrome plastic door pull surround.
6. Using a small flat-bladed screwdriver carefully remove the 2 plastic covers in the side of the armrest and remove the screws inside behind them.
7. Remove the plastic cover in the top of the arm\pull recess and remove the screw underneath.
8. Remove the windows switch panel using a flat screwdriver or trim tool.
9. Unplug the connector by squeezing down on the locking clip and pulling it out.
10. The panel can now be removed from the door by carefully pulling the panel away from the door and using a large flat-bladed screwdriver or trim tool to release the trim clips around the outer edge behind it.
11. Pull the bottom away from the door and lift the panel up over the door pull and lift up out of the window recess.

REFITTING
1. Re-assembly in reverse order, make sure the white clips are in the door and not the panel and that they are not damaged, if they are they can be replaced with a similar size universal clip.
2. It's easier with the window is down and locate the top door panel so it clips goes into the window grove at a 25-degree angle and then swing the bottom down level, you have to push it over the white handle as you do it.
HOT TIPS!
1 - Be careful not to break the cream trim clips on the outer edge as they are quite expensive now, still available from Nissan PN: 8099937B00.
If the polythene is missing then buy a sheet of thick polythene and cut it to size and tape it on with duct tape. This will help with water getting through and noise.
Kames Show 2021 Scotland
Despite the ongoing Covid issues and a terrible weather forecast we still managed to get 6 figs to this lovely little car show. Scottish Chapter Coordinator Ken Graham take up the story.
Words and Pictures Ken Graham - Sunday 8th August

Once again this year, as in 2020, car shows and events have been seriously affected by Covid-19 with few, if any, getting the go-ahead due to restrictions on gatherings.

The Kames Car Show in Muirkirk took place on Sunday 8th August. Ayrshire managed to get the official Council approval to go ahead, so what had been our only show in 2020 with the Scottish Figaro Chapter was again one of the very few we managed in 2021!

Once the show was publicised members were really keen to get to a show and numbers ‘expressing interest’ built steadily until we had 18 Figs signed up and I had to contact the organisers to see if they could accommodate us all! They said they could, but I closed the list at that point to keep it manageable.

As the date approached a few members had some traditional Figgy problems, the over-running paint shop work; general repairs needed; and most, unfortunately, a seized engine which couldn’t be replaced until the new Figaro pistons became available! So a few ‘mechanical’ call-offs, and then - the weather forecast!! In the run-up, the forecast for the day switched between thunderstorms, heavy rain, light rain and back to heavy rain and thunderstorms again! The night before I received messages and emails saying ‘the weather looks awful, not sure of a full day in a soggy field!!’ Inevitably, and completely understandably, we had a few more call-offs, so ended up with a perfectly acceptable six Figaros at the show.
As the photos show, we probably had a bit more dry weather than wet but the heavy showers and
predicted awful weather probably kept some of the public at home. However, we had our usual high level of interest in the cars, from the ‘What on earth are these?’, ‘How much would one cost?’, and ‘Do they still make them?’ to the ‘Oh, my daughter has one, and she loves it’!

Many thanks to all the members who made it along for their support, Donnie and Marie Blair; Heather and Reid Martin; Isabelle Caskie; Ann Wardrop and Julie Brennan, and many, many thanks to Ayrshire Classic Car Club for their sterling efforts to get the show on with all the Covid restrictions in place.

Here’s to 2022 when we might just get these 18 Figs along………!!!
Suffolk Day Trip 2021
After the amazing experience of the 30th Birthday Bash, and meeting such a lovely crowd of people, we were really looking forward to the Eastern Chapter’s Suffolk Day Trip...
Words & Pictures: Adam Woods – Sunday 11th July 2021.

We had started planning a few months ago and wanted to take people on a tour through the gorgeous Suffolk countryside! After a few calls and emails, we had it all planned out and just hoped for great weather! We started the day by meeting at Ufford Park Hotel, parking up on their grassed pavilion area, and a slightly cloudy day became brighter and brighter as more and more members arrived!

The sunshine soon saw roofs come down and so we set off just after 11 am, driving out in convoy from Woodbridge through UFO renowned
Rendlesham Forest, then through Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB, and then across the open country up to Friday Street Farm Shops and The Barn vintage and antiques.

After a break to visit the shops or grab a bite to eat, we headed off again down the country lanes towards the unique coastal fantasy holiday village of Thorpeness with its Jacobean and Tudor style buildings … and as we drove through the centre past the boating lake we couldn’t help but toot our horns and wave at all the visitors!
"We drove through the centre past the boating lake we couldn’t help
but toot our horns and wave at all the visitors!"
From here we headed down the coast in the baking sunshine past the famous Scallop on the beach, beeping our way into Aldeburgh where the mayor had agreed for us to park up on the seafront! And what a great welcome we had, with all ages of visitors curious about our Figaros, keen to take photos and even just to say hello!
We chatted together about the journey we’d just made, the cyclist bemused by a fleet of Figaros over-taking, and the village gardener still waving as the last of our party drove by! From here the day was everyone’s own to enjoy the seaside, fish and chips, shopping and chat some more, while onlookers yearned for the joy Figaros bring!

On July13, as my Figaro came into Indianapolis on the back of a transport, a passing motorist noted, “Look what rare find I saw as I was going home today,” as he took a picture. The picture and his note went viral on the local car enthusiasts site. I’ll send you the picture from my phone as I can’t get it to my laptop. Not 10 minutes I got my Figaro and saw a real one for the first time. I LOVE IT!
Polly Points - USA
I bought my Figaro in December 2019 from Duncan Imports, choosing my Lapis Grey example from the line up over nearly 100 Figaros in their warehouse. This July was my first chance to enter a car show since I brought the Figaro home to North Carolina. The event was put on by a credit union for a local charity and attracted nearly 70 vintage cars and trucks. I met many enthusiasts with lots of questions about the little car they had never seen or heard of before. I had a wonderful time answering all their questions and filling them in on the history. At the end of the day I was awarded with the Best Import!

Above are pictures of Juliet, Ivy Rose, and Delilah.

My parents and I live in the United States. Somehow we stumbled across a Figaro online one day and the rest was history. My father first bought my mom the white Figaro, we now own three. We had it shipped to Norfolk, VA and drove to pick it up. We instantly fell in love with the car. Since purchasing the car and bringing it to the United States, it has been used in the romantic horror short film, Ivy, produced by Postmortem Films, which can be seen on YouTube.
Tonya Bredamus - USA
This is Montgomery or Monty for short.

I’m so exited to join the Figaro Owners club. My name is Andi and I’m an Australian living in the U.K.

I thought I'd share this with you. It may be of interest. In late July early August 1991 my father went to Kobe with his Lions club where he met a Nissan panel beater. The panel beater proudly showed him his new car, recently acquired. This is my father with their interpreter. The photo was taken in Himeji, close to Kobe.
Here is my 86 year old father, exactly 30 years later, to a few days in a similar pose with my Figaro. The interpreter is now my Mum, also 86 years old. Dad is hard of hearing from occupational deafness, so she needs to tell him the things he missed. I need to get a JAF badge so they match up.

How the club started
Our son Daniel had always wanted a Figaro having seen the car at his local garage when he was just 16. After saving for a number of years (plus a small contribution from his mum and dad!) he, at last, brought an emerald green model in May 2008.

Following the purchase, we searched on the internet for a club in the hope we could attend events and meet other owners. We were amazed that at that time no club existed so the Figaro Owners Club was born!

We decided to build a basic website and forum which took a few months and on the 1st March 2009, we pressed the publish button and waited to see if anyone wanted to join? Within a week we had 10 members, a month 35 and a year 478!

Today the club has around 1,300 members worldwide in countries including New Zealand, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and many more.
