Graduate Student Symposium hosted by GCRL

The Graduate Student Symposium 2022 will be hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab and Marine Education Center in Ocean Springs, MS from April 8-10th. This conference is intended to be in-person, but we will have a virtual option. Registration is NOW OPEN , Please submit abstracts here, deadline is March 1st, 2022.

The Graduate Student Symposium is an annual regional conference that is alternately hosted by the University of South Alabama, University of Southern Mississippi, and Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium. These meetings feature traditional 12-minute oral presentations and a poster session. The real hallmark of GSS is that the meeting is exclusively hosted by and attended by graduate students- a relaxed atmosphere to present research in preparation for larger state or national/international conferences. While these three institutions alternate hosting the conference, GSS is open to any graduate student that wants to attend. In previous years, attendees ranged from universities scattered throughout Texas to Florida- any graduate student is welcome!

Feel free to email sara.marriott@usm.edu for any questions regarding the symposium, abstract submission, or registration.

Nadine Phillips is a native Mississippian and lifelong nature lover. The majority of her interests revolve around the natural world and sharing that joy with others. She is an avid nature photographer and has been gardening as long as she can remember. She is active in the native plant movement working to promote biodiversity. Nadine is the current Vice President of the Mississippi Native Plant Society and historian for the Cullowhee Native Plant Conference in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Nadine is also a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide endorsed by the International Nature and Forest Therapy Alliance (INFTA). She has been researching and practicing various forms of nature and forest therapy since 2014 and sharing her passion for nature by guiding “wonderwalks” in nature since 2018. Presently, Nadine conducts regularly scheduled Forest Therapy walks at The Crosby Arboretum in Picayune, MS.

Join us to learn more about connecting to the natural world through Nature and Forest Therapy practices. Deeply rooted in the Japanese concept of Shinrin-yoku, or “forest -air bathing”, Forest Therapy is an evidence-based public health practice considered to be a natural remedy to reduce stress and a pathway to a happier, healthier, and more rewarding life. Guided Forest Therapy experiences combine a specific blend of complementary sensory, physical, and mental exercises in suitable forest surroundings. This beneficial practice is backed by significant medical and scientific research, and the abundance of health benefits are wide-reaching. Nature and Forest Therapy Guide Nadine Phillips will share more about the background, research, and beneficial results of this relaxing practice and how to invite more nature connection into your everyday life.
